Fire Gearlds

In watching the game today it’s just beyond belief. They can’t get a shot off or get it inbounds with little pressure. Nothing positive to say.
My Sr year in High School, the Griffith girls won 1 game, they would usually lose by 40 points against decent teams, this it what that reminded me of, that was pathetic.

She’d be gone in my book, guessing she’ll get next year though. Roster wise if a few players go oh well, not sure who would really be clamoring to get them. Two younger players that looked decent were Jones and Puryear, McCarthy looked so slow, I do hope she sticks around though. Poole and Reynolds haven’t done much, that hurts as both were top 60 type recruits, hoping next year both are healthy and improve, time will tell.

If what I’ve read in other posts/ threads is true - that she has a $2 Million buyout (?) - then I don’t see any coaching change happening for quite some time. I guess there’s a way to confirm that? Sure seems excessive for the modest-to-mediocre results of the past 3 seasons.
And this season is the worst yet….

I miss the energy and joy that her first year’s team played with. And they were holdovers from the previous regime. But that team played gutty. Pulled a couple upsets too. Totally different dynamic now it seems. Agree on Jones and Puryear - they play hard and have shown improvement. Maybe the tide will slowly turn with those 2 to build off of next year

Mike Carmin posted the contract extension details on his substack last June. Link below. Buyout drops to 1.6 after July 1st 2025.

1.6 million would be worth it.

At least if there is a change, we know we will deal with a new coach and give her/him time to grow, recruit and bring in a new system. There have been other teams who were really bad, like us, and are back to being competitive in 2-3 years with a new staff, roster and direction. Our leaders need to get off their butts and act as if they give a damn, at least for the sake of the dwinding fanbase and/or alumni. They should be ashamed to be indifferent about this.

A Purdue job is much better than a mid-major school, so there should be some good candidates who would be attracted to coming here. That said, if it stays as it is, we aren't going up, not even an inch. We gave this staff many changes and it didn't work out. Say bye, bye.

I'm not sure Purdue is considered a "good" job anymore. It's going to be really tough to win here going forward. The Big Ten Conference is crazy good now. The additions of USC UCLA Oregon and Washington have shown the most in WBB than any other sport. With MSU, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State, ND - schools literally surrounding us from all corners solidified. It's going to take a really good recruiter to recruit the best kids in the area to Purdue. I also don't see us attracting national kids either. Purdue won with Midwest kids. Good luck stealing them from the above listed schools now.

We need someone really experienced with a ton of connections - KG had very few when she arrived which has hurt her. I still think they will give her 1 more year because I just don't see this administration shelling out 1.6 mil on women's basketball with Purdue football struggling the way it has. But I don't see an up and coming coach knocking down the door to come here - over some of these other schools that will have openings. Our profile has been severely diminished and they know it will be very hard competing against all these good teams with solidified coaching staffs. We also will not make the appropriate offer in terms of money either.

They went super cheap with Gearlds thinking we had a Matt Painter in her. Very big risk considering what has been transpiring all around us with programs significantly raising their play. It's going to be extremely difficult now going forward whoever is leading the charge

You could make a lot of that up in ticket sales, because if CKG is retained, you won't have 500 fans in the stands next year. With a new coach that can stir up some enthusiasm, maybe 3-4k in attendance times 18 home games times 15-20$ per ticket, it would be money well spent getting rid of someone that makes you as the AD look absolutely stupid for hiring them.

Gearlds also was not brought in on the cheap. They went to someone making 40k and offered her 550k to start and have bumped her over 600k a year on the extension. Suzy Mercheant at MSU was working for around 280k at that time, although Fralic is up near or over CKG's salary.

As to the load of BS that it would be hard to attract a good coach. Vandy was destroyed by White, but they landed Ralph. UMinn was terrible under Whalen, but they landed their new coach. Illinois was in the cellar when they landed Green. MSU was in the bottom of the conference when they landed Fralic. Anyone believeing we are in too bad a place to get a promising young coach knows nothing about women's basketball and has not been paying any attention to the rest of the league the last 4 years.
