Fat Basil

Don't be on the fence.......

the dense, tense, master of Defense......

Man all of that unproductive weight really hurting him.
I don't have any idea of how his weight translate, but do think quickness (stop and change direction and recover mo=mv) than gathering and just jumping is a little different. None of this is to suggest that he is behind or hindered, just that jumping is a little different than D on the perimeter even though both are affected by extra weight...I'm not sure it is a one to one...

I saw Charles play in the Olympic trials at Gloomington when Knight was coach. He was most definitely a big man (although he was only like 6'4 or 5") who knew how to throw his weight around......he hustled, and he could get up for his size. Of course no one got in his way when he drove the lane LOL. I just remember thinking that this dude was destined to be a special player. Then my attention went to Jordan..........my jaw is still lying on the floor. The best of the best all in one place, when basketball was still basketball. Good times for a young kid...even in Ass Hall.

P.S. Got my pic taken with John Thompson...........talk about a big man. He was a nice guy.

Good to see! Thanks for sharing.

I was wrong on this. I will gladly eat humble pie.

Basil - in my opinion - is extremely important to this year's squad. His athleticism, energy and spark is unique in that no one can bring what he can.

Jeez a little joke and I get quoted and lectured, he will lose the weight and be in shape for the season, conditioning does remarkable things even to the ones who are lazy offseason.

my apologies for what was not intended. The thread suggested by many others as well that all is fine because he can still dunk. That may or may not be the case. Not sure where you pick up the lecture, but then again I'm old enough that I'm not that tuned in as many today...

Some guys show their best athleticism with wide bodies: Barkley, Wes Unseld, Draymond Green, many more ... Others -- Shawn Kemp, Robert "Tractor" Traylor, Oliver Davis, Shaq in his later years seem to eat themselves out of the game. Depends

Just saw a pic of Basil and trust me there is no fat about him. Either he put on muscle or lost almost all his fat already

I love me some "Fat Basil".

I'm calling him Fat Basil all season lol.

"Fat Basil with the windmill dunk!"
"Nice steal, Fat Basil."
"Fat Basil playing great D tonight. Great hustle, Fat Basil."
"I can't believe Porkchop just took Fat Basil out of the game."
"Fat Basil runs the length of the court for an incredible block!"

The mom way to say it without showing a slanted opinion is "He looks healthy." Maybe he just wants to bulk up to Biggie size.

That was a good Andy Griffith episode. Barney, I mean Yuki Shimoda did one on the bully.

Fred Plummer......Good thing someone told him about that judo and wised him up......it's something awful....could kill a person with that......

Classic character acting from the late Allan Melvin......aka "Sam" the Butcher.....Sergeant Hacker.......Barney Hefner....."Doc" Malloy.....Hotel Detective......Lawless Fruit Vendor......and many others, including as the voice of Magilla Gorilla.

The thing is, there's phases of the year for athletes. What a football player is in February after lifting for 2 straight months without practicing - is not the football player in November three months into the season where they're lifting maybe half as often. With basketball, it's hard to keep weight on through an entire season. The weight a player starts out with is often not the weight they'll end at (particular non-guards). If Basil has a harder time keeping on weight, then yes, "fattening up" in the offseason and then starting to workout hard is probably the route to go. Doesn't mean it's problematic or he's been lazy.

A 21 year old kid in a good weight/diet/conditioning program can probably gain/lose 25 pounds in about 3 months. Think about it. They essentially have a personal chef, personal trainer, play hoops 4 hours a day, have access to every type of top notch fitness equipment imaginable.
Of course, none of that ever seemed to help Oprah either.......

Oprah can lose weight and she has. She just always gains it back. Food for thought.

Don't be ridiculous...she lacked lateral quickness at her best weight and had no post up game whatsoever.

Purdue grad in Texas, Thanks for the memories. Barney was my all time favorite hero. They don't make 'em like that anymore. America would be much safer if we had more Barney Fifes today. Don Knotts, what a great entertainer.

Barney FIFE? I thought we were talking about Barney the dinosaur. Another great actor with no true equal.

Some people said he was fat, too.

You're quite welcome.....I think Don Knotts won five emmy awards for portraying Barney Fife.

Mr Smooth, Mr. Suave.....and don't forget "The Love God?"
