For the third time since May, former Michigan State University basketball player Keith Appling has been arrested and once again a gun is involved, police say.

Appling, 24, was arrested at about 9 p.m. Sunday on Detroit's east side after first driving away from a traffic stop and then stopping his car following a short pursuit, Detroit police said in a news release this morning.

Sgt. Michael Woody said police stopped Appling's 2013 Dodge Challenger Blue after observing him commit a traffic violation at Russell and Seven Mile. An officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and requested Appling's driver's license.

As the officer reached his hand inside the vehicle to retrieve Mr. Appling's driver's license, Appling rolled up his window and drove off, Woody said. The officers pursued and stopped the vehicle at Orleans and East. State Fair and took Mr. Appling into custody without further incident, Woody said.

Police noticed a Gucci bag that had been on the rear seat was now missing from the vehicle. Backtracking, the found the bag on the side of the road with a loaded semi-automatic Berretta inside along with paperwork with Appling's name.

Appling was arrested in May outside a strip club in Dearborn on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a loaded firearm and marijuana

In June, he was arrested in Detroit, when he was in the back seat of a car during a traffic stop and a Smith and Wesson .40-caliber handgun was in the floorboard, Detroit police previously testified.

Both other cases are pending in Wayne County Circuit Court. Appling's attorney Cyril Hall didn't immediately respond to a voicemail Monday seeking comment.

Appling played for Michigan State from 2010-2014 and had two brief contracts with the Orlando Magic last season, according to the AP.

One has to wonder whether this string of arrests will have an impact on Izzo's recruiting this year. My guess is that the impact will be minimal, but if I were a parent help pin my son choose to play basketball at a school, it would raise some questions.

It would not as many questions as the incident at Louisville would, however, and that didn't keep Pitino from landing Malik Williams.

I wish it would have an impact, but it won't.

Izzo is a media darling and they are not going to connect him to any of these ex players. If they would really do some serious reporting and stories on how many bad things have happened during and after players time in East Lansing, then maybe it would have an impact. But that isn't going to happen. The media loves him and his "aw shucks" interviews. They don't want any part of the seedy, foul mouthed version of Izzo.

I respect Izzo a lot and I am not saying that I would hold what's happened against him, but at the same time I would be asking why so many of his recent players are getting in trouble with the law. Still, I've heard great things about Gary Harris recently, as an example, so I don't want to imply that all kids that come out of the program are thugs, but I'd wonder if the young men in the program come out with a sense that they are not held accountable for their actions. If parents are paying attention, these are natural questions.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the respect part. I have no respect for him.

As far as the sense of entitlement, you may be on to something there.

They're going to become a program similar to an SEC football program, in which nothing else matters as long as you're winning.

Is everything OK in East Lansing? This thread has been here for two hours and we've yet to hear from MSU nation lambasting us for besmirching the great name of Tom Izzo?

They are just on a pot break. They will be back.

I've heard that there are programs that get far more "help" from shadow networks, with Kentucky rumored to be the worst.

The Family Atmosphere.

Is apparently full of smoke and mirrors (well, literally at least full of smoke)
Kids join gangs seeking some semblance of "family", so I guess it's all a matter of perspective. But I agree that this the family atmosphere at MSU is not preparing these kids for life in the real world.

may be a leaked alternate msu basketball logo for next season?
