Europe Trip - Game 4

A few stats that stand out:

Braden Smith: 42 assists
TKR: 72 points and 35 rebounds
Myles Colvin: 8 for 12 from 3
I'm not sure why it's gone unnoticed by the folks on this board but Colvin was the second leading scorer (13 ppg) by a pretty wide margin. Furst was 3rd with 10.5, It's a small sample versus poor competition but He wasn't taking a back seat to any of the upper classman when it came to putting up shots and at least in the three games he played he was hitting them.

A lot of hype for Waddell but after a pretty remarkable stat line in the first game (15 points) he only scored 11 points in the last three games. Ended up averaging 6.5 points, 2.75 rebounds and 1 assist per game.

To me Colvin's three-point shooting in Europe and how he was used as a 3-point shooter for Team USA is the story of the offseason. Could bring a dimension we were missing last year at the two or three.

Might be because of couple of those games were against high school quality teams. Not much that showed during those games applies against the Big 10.

Accept three-point shooting, With Edey in the game we get a lot of wide-open threes. It's often like free-throw shooting. It's still 22 feet 1 3/4 inches no matter the competition. He's not going to shoot 67% from 3 but the reality is most of Purdue's guys 3-point percentages in Europe tracked along with what they had done last year. The idea that team USA would use him almost exclusively as a three-point shooter tells me that he must be a pretty decent shooter.

3 point shooting HAS to improve. We are still not a good shooting team as a whole! TKR (3 of 8- 37.5%) Waddell (4 of 11- 36.4%) Colvin (8 if 12- 66.7%), Heide(3 of 3- 100%) and Barrett (1 of 2- 50%) were the only ones to shoot greater than 35%. Smith (3 of 9) 33% everyone else less than…Loyer 31.8% (7 of 22) Gillis <30% (5 of 17) Jones <20% (2 of 13) Furst and Rayl 0% on only 2 attempts. Team average: 36.4% (saved by Colvin and Heide)

I remember watching Carsen Edwards for the first time against sub par competition in Europe and recognizing that he was a special talent. I don’t completely discount what we saw from Colvin (and others). Colvin obviously has a ton of potential.

The only thing that can explain Colvin's % it is that he was used to the international ball (Molton) he had just finished playing with on the U19 team. I say that a little tongue-in-cheek, but wonder whether the Wilson ball will be used more in practice this year.

Purdue needs a volume shooter that can hit around 40% from 3. Sasha, Mathias, Cline, CE and Vince Edwards have all done it in recent years. Even Newman shot 38% his freshmen year while attempting 3.7 3s per game.

Smith was our best 3-point shooter by % last year (37.6%), but he shot less than 3 threes a game (making 1). People reference Morton's 3-point shooting in 2021-2022 but he averaged less than 1 three-point shot a game (making .4). Loyer was really our only high volume 3-point shooter last year (5.2 attempts per game) but he only shot 32%.

We need somebody/anybody to fill that role or we're going to have familiar issues come tourney time.

I think that Loyer will prove to be a much better shooter than he showed last season.

I hope so! He’s still about where he was at the end of last year, 31.8% from 3 on European trip 7 for 22. Overall FG% 22.9% (8 for 35). Guys shooting <50% on the trip: Smith 37.9% (11 for 29) Jones 34.6% (9 for 26) Gillis 46.4% (13 for 28) so Loyer had lowest percentage!

The 2nd and 3rd games were against rec league teams....the final game our offense was give the ball to our bigs because we owned the paint....I like the shooting of Colvin and heide but I wouldn't put too much stock into it....I think a more telling stat was Waddell leading the team in blocks...he's an elite wing defender and that's something we need on the court this year...he was by far our most impressive 3....

I think you might find that shooting from 22'1.75" at iu or ANY Big 10 school QUITE different than shooting in a casual overseas "pick up game" type competition.

Is this Brian or Matt??????

After the first game the elite player you keep mentioning went 1 for 7 from 3 (hit a desperation heave at the half) and scored less than 4 points per game. He basically reverted back to the Brian Waddell we watched last year....and yeah I watched a couple of the games. I'm not going to root against any Boiler. He looks a lot better than he did last year but that's a pretty low bar. If the dude can shoot the three and play defense, I'm all in but I think you have some unrealistic expectations.

He was chosen to be on the USA U19 Team apparently for his three-point shooting. He played 10 minutes a game but he took the third most 3s on the team and shot 38%. This wasn't a team just thrown together like the one Newman and Morton played for a couple years ago. This was a team of elite talent. Several 5-star prospects and they still didn't medal. This was a good team playing elite competition.

For reference, this is also the team Catchings was cut from.

He shot better than 1 for 7....got to the bucket a lot, led the fast break...had 4 blocks in the last game...he can do a lot more if he isn't scoring a lot...I watch more than the stat line...he's our best 3 and it's not close....

I agree some of the shooting numbers are concerning since it was an issue last year, but it was a small sample size. For example if you take out the last really bad Europe game for Loyer (1-11, 1-5) and then add in his really good scrimmage stats before the trip (5-10, 3-4), his numbers over a 4 game stretch look better at 41% from 2 and 42% from 3.

I think Loyer will end up around 40% on high volume from 3. The encouraging thing is it looks like Colvin, Heide, and Wadell are all capable spot up shooters too

He had a fantastic game in game one, but he did shoot 1 for 7 from 3 after the first game according to Purdue's own website.

In the last game. Heide, Morton and Colvin did not play. That left us with four backcourt guys to play the 1,2, and 3. Technically Waddell was the only three playing that day, In a fairly competitive game (we won by 10 points) Waddell scored 0 points, had 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 3 blocks and 1 steal.

My point isn't that Waddell is a bad player or he won't be in the mix for minutes this year, but like most players, we' should hope to see a slightly better version of what we saw last year. It's rare that someone transforms into a totally different player over the 5-month summer break when most of these guys have been playing ball since they were little kids.

You forget that Waddell was hurt last year...his mobility is night and day better than what it was last season...he will be a totally different player this year...he's got good feet, can drive the ball, good passer, great defender, shooting looks better....of all of our 3's, he's looked the best....Colvin is a little raw still, Morton has been hurt all summer, heide isn't quick enough to play that 3rd guard spot, he's more of a forward....Jones can play some 3 but we'll need him quite a bit at the 1 and 2 this year....Waddell will at least get 20 minutes a games, if not more....
