No sports analyst here, but I watched the Rockets-Grizzlies game tonight and have some observations to share about Edey.

If you look at the box score on ESPN you’ll see he had 2 points, 6 fouls, 7 reb a steal and a block in 24 minutes. Underwhelming, but well rounded, right? Jalen Greene got two or three blow-by scores on him, one because he was just out of position in a way that he will fix. But Jaylen Green scored 42 points - out of his mind tonight.

However:
1) It doesn’t show up in the stat lines, but every time someone tried to score around Edey there was a much lower chance they could do anything functional. Some of his defense made the Rockets look almost comically out of place.

2) Edey was in the game a few times. It seemed almost every time he was put in the game the Rockets were behind and when he got taken out, they were ahead by 7 to 9 points. A little bit less of such a difference in the second half, but that Edey effect was still there. Notably, his last minutes played were with I think around four minutes left in the game, with the Grizzlies up by two or four points, and they ended up losing without him in the lineup.

3) Edey co-led the team in plus/minus points on the floor with +11. The other +11 was Ja Morant, though Ja played 37 minutes.

I think they're still trying to figure out how to use him. Seemed like they had, but over the past week or so he hasn't had many scoring opportunities.

The Mich kid has a big quickness advantage against 5's. he's better there than at 4 playing w/Zach is the biggest issue I think. Less about Zach not doing enough and more about the amazing group of young guys that keep demanding to see the floor with their play. Stacked team. They just played an amazingly entertaining game against the Minnesota Timberwolves who are led by 2 rookies, BOTH avg over 20 a game! The young talent is stupid thick in the league.

The one low interior pass to him immediately had the same predictable result as it always did in college. The only difference is his Grizzlies teammates and coach don’t yet recognize that he does currently have the highest ROI shot on the team. (Effective field goal pct factoring in 3’s and points/shot). The Grizzlies might be the highest scoring team in the NBA right now, but they’re not even optimally utilizing their most effective weapon.

The opening tip off was laughably embarrasing. Whoever the Rockets’ player was who matched up against him didn’t even bother jumping or trying to go for it.

They will rarely run plays for him for him for his post moves for layups or an easy hook shot. They will do pick and roll for dunk with Morant and other guards. But passing into the post for a shot like Edey's not in the NBA DNA these days.

100%. He is sooooo wide open it’s insane how they don’t look at him. They just jack up a 3
