Don't we need another Guard?

The other site says that Jones could start at the 2 / 3. Smith seems to be a lock for starter, Jones could start alongside Smith and Loyer.
Jones at the #3? That's a lineup I haven't thought of. I thought he would strictly be #1 or #2. He must be bigger than I thought he was.

Only 6'1" or 6'2" but is very strong and often guarded 4s in his career. May be a few inches short for a "3" but he would probably just guard the best perimeter player anyway.

I'm not sure what's confusing you. The original post I responded to had nothing to do with going after an available player who is an upgrade to a current starter. It was a dumb hypothetical strawman saying that replacing Smith with a better PG was the best way for this team to reach its potential.

I'm all for bringing in anyone who can be more productive (I probably care less about 'talent' than you do) than a current starter. That's not going to happen because those players aren't out there at this point. If you want to talk specifically about PG, I suspect that your list of players who would make Purdue a better team than Smith does would be materially longer than my list.
There were 2 debates going on:
1) Should we be looking to upgrade the PG position through the portal? Some people don't think we need to and think Smith is as good as it gets.
2) Who are the available PGs who are available who would be an upgrade. (this question, or at least the options, changes over time as guys commit elsewhere).

Nobody has said Smith is the best we can get. Painter does however recruit only guys he feels will be a fit for his system and Smith at this point in his career not only fits but he has done a good job for a Frosh in handling the pg position. Painter is loyal and he isn’t going to risk losing Smith by adding a player who doesn’t fit his system.

That would leave Smith or loyer to guard the other teams #3. That doesn't seem likely but I could be over thinking it....

A lot of teams start a shooter and a slasher at the 2 and 3. I would normally expect Loyer to guard the shooter and Jones to guard the slasher.

You guys could be right. I thought Colvin or Cam would be the #3 or at least I hoped one of them would be starting, but if Jones beats them out that's ok too.

I can't really disagree. Did Purdue offer Lj Cryer? I don't recall, but if Painter didn't, then that pretty much answers the question about recruiting over Smith. I love Smith, but would have taken Cryer in a heartbeat.
Cryer is a 2....smith is a point guard....he wouldn't take Smith's spot....

Smith is better than Kerr krisa ranked 5th...so I'd say top 5 if he went into the portal.....I've got sources on jones and from what I've heard he's our best perimeter defender, one of our better shooters, quickest player....quite the steal....you love to look at rankings but you aren't capable of understanding bball on your own....wouldn't surprise me if jones started.....
Agree that looking just at rankings doesn’t make a lot of sense

Okay, now people think we're going to start a 6 foot 1 guy who shot 36.8% from the field last year and 28% from 3 while committing more turnovers than he had assists over the last 4 years. All of this earning him 3rd team all MVC honors. Has anyone seen the teams in the MVC now days?

You can't say this is the answer and at the same time say Painter shouldn't have tried to upgrade the guard position.

Then that's probably a coaching flaw in Painter.
And I'll go back to David Jenkins Jr as the prime example. By all accounts, he was not a Painter 'system' (whatever that is) guy. He had been to 3 schools in 5 years, high volume shooter, not great defensively, etc, etc. He didn't fit what most would consider to be the Painter mold.
And again, if you're worried a player might leave because you recruited someone better, then that's a good thing.

But, Loyer isn't quick and Smith got abused by bigger guards.

Loyer is quick enough to play respectable defense and what bigger guards "abused" Smith?

Most freshman guards are rather poor defensively. I doubt you understand that, however.

Smith will end up on an All-B1G team this year and you will still cry.

I am not predicting that Jones will start, but just commenting on how that lineup would matchup. I tend to think that either Heide or Colvin will step up and grab the third starting guard position by mid-season. Even if he does start, Jones will also be Smith’s backup and they will play a limited number of minutes together.

And we have another spot open where he could have gone after another guard that we desperately needed for this upcoming season. Bad roster management imo.

"Name me a better pg in the portal than smith....we brought in jones who is pretty good....I just want to know where this mythical better pg is?...."

I guess I was interpreting this comment as Jones providing minutes at the PG spot?
So, he could start in front of Loyer?

Mulchahy from Rutgers beat up Smith like he was beating on his little brother.

You were wrong about Smith in HS and you’ll be wrong about him in college also.
I like Smith. Already he said he exceeded expectations. But if there were an oppty to get a guy who was 6'3, athletic, could shoot and drive, I'd take him in a second. (So would everyone else).

If you're saying is a senior, big, physical, guard like Mulcahy is going to beat up a freshman PG like "his little brother" I would say "no shit, Sherlock".

So what is your point?

You asked which bigger guards abused Smith. I named one. You get upset.
Don't get mad if you don't like the answer.

Why don't you take your pick? Put up the NIL money to get the better player instead of whining and carping about who we have. Some of these guys look like cheap bargains for a high roller like you.

I must be misremembering that game...mulcahey played 5 more minutes, got only 2 more points than smith, same amount of assists, and Purdue won the game....I'd say freshman smith was better that day...

You named the exact protype guard who is built to bully other guards and cry that it happened. Of course it would happen, that's what Mulcahy's job on the court is as an oversized PG. Do you get mad at water when it's wet?

Yeh....duh. Weird how I picked an example to support my argument. Are you an attorney?

You picked an example with a specific guard in mind but said guards. If you would have just said Mulcahy "abused" him in his first matchup, that's an easy win.

But you said guards - are you an attorney?
