Don't buy talk of sellouts ... Check for yourself

Apparently we have much better televisions these days than the ones in Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Iowa, because, midway through the 2018 season, they’ve all drawn at least 20,000 per game more than we have.

No one’s agreed with me? What’s to agree about? That Purdue has and sells tickets? I’ve been debunked? About what? I made up the rumors to be vehement? Yeah, sure. I’m so steamed at myself, I could be the Boilermaker Special.

Fact is, even posters on here have said they couldn’t find tickets for Ohio State and were told that only singles were left -- before last week. Purdue fans at a game and at tailgates tried to tell me the same. Then a forum post indicated a sellout was approaching for Iowa, too. So, I debunked them by pointing to the hundreds of seats on Purdue’s own seating charts.

Now the Ohio State seats are truly selling out. As of this moment, I see two left. That’s the whole idea. A real sellout.

This is totally laughable...you are comparing our attendance to stadiums that literally hold over 100k people? They average 20k more than us? YOU DONT SAY?!?!? Might be because OSU, Whisky, and MSU have been in the CFP over the last 5 years. UM is...well, UM. And Iowa is only a few years removed form a perfect regular season. Seriously, did you just wake up from a coma since 1968 when Purdue was last really, really relevant nationally with Griese and Keyes in the backfield? Maybe Brees when we even struggled to sell out the stadium?

‘I debunked the Iowa sellout.’ Do you want a trophy? It really is starting to look like you want a trophy or a reward. I’ll buy you a Boiler Gold if I’m able to make it to another home game this year.

Stop and think for a minute here. Think.

Do you really think we should have the same GameDay attendance as Ohio State, Michigan, Penn state and Nebraska who have TWENTY-SIX national championships between them? How can you possibly compare Purdue attendance to those national powers with DECADES of consistent success?

As for Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan State... They are far better football programs than Purdue is today. Of course they will draw more fans. Maybe in 5 years, we can hope to be where they are today.

For your sake, I'm glad the OSU game is 2 tickets away from being a sell out. Maybe you can find something more important to rant about and possibly find some happiness in life.

I feel bad for this Born Boiler guy. I'm starting to think he might have Dementia or something. He's just not there cognitively speaking.

I just found Born Boiler... ;)

Games on TV? Yeah, no one had such things in 1969. And who’d ever go to a Purdue game if they can stay home and watch Rutgers and pull weeds?

You’ve learned to have fun, even with some hurt. Great. Purdue needs more to try.

Just understand, here in the real world of 2018, that seven Big Ten programs are outdrawing Purdue by more than 60,000 to 20,000 per game. Accept that, and you accept revenue in the bottom half of the league. And, as many here often claim, football money and performance tend to stay in step.

This year’s attendance has been below Purdue’s all-time average. That’s not fine. Not with four games each 10,000 below capacity, which is 12,000 below what it was. Not for a team that hosted three nationally known programs and soundly beat the one that was ranked. Not for a team that entertained in three games decided by eight total points. Not for a team that had two players break all-time records.

What you don’t understand are the whole generations who have seen all you’ve seen and much, much more. And seen much better, in stadiums and out.

Saturday we’ll see a full house of more than 57,000. Nice, but it’ll be about 14,000 short of Ross-Ade Stadium’s record from 1980 -- 71,629. And that’s just one hint of the work that needs to be done.

I remember when Ross-Ade was that large and sold out all the time....Hate it is so small now...Burke strikes again.

The game appears to be sold out, I went on there and cannot buy a single ticket. It also appears to have less than 5,000 tickets left for Iowa. Lots of tickets left for Wisconsin.

For the record, UW has always had great attendance even when they were really bad. It's the same with the Packers.

Yes, Johnny, it is truly laughable that we had 40,000 empty seats through the first four games for this great bunch of Boilermakers while half of our league has been filling their bigger houses.

Frames of reference here are severely limited. Football reality existed long before any posters’ times. Wisconsin still has an all-time losing record in the Big Ten. So does Iowa, which Purdue once beat 17 straight times. Seventeen in a row. What you see as powers not long ago were weak sisters. Purdue and a booming share of its fans have seen both.

Fortunately, that non-compete clause you've signed is non-binding for Purdue, which has had the foundation in place since 2003 to restore Ross-Ade’s lost capacity and expand it to levels more in step with our conference opponents. Just gotta do it and get the students in there, too.

Now it’s back to selling out our current 57,236 seats, which we’ve done once in five games for a team that’s proven it can beat anyone and deserves much more fan support than it had throughout August and September.

Wow, meconium, pretty crappy to be attacking mental health … especially after being held back twice at Sylvan.

Somewhat tangentially related.. I would like to see the visitor block moved to the west side of the stadium. Better optics for tv. Even with a sell out and 80-90% Purdue fans, the red sticks out like a sore thumb. Unfortunately about half the teams in the conference are red.

Did Ohio State sell out? You seemed to think there were so many tickets available.

The final official count was 60,716, so that would be a resounding yes, although checks on Purdue’s own site showed 43 seats in multiples and singles were available 20 hours before kickoff and 17 were still left 10 hours before kickoff, all having been re-released, as an earlier post noted.

The availability wasn’t what I “seemed to think,” it was fact, shown several times on here by the direct links to Purdue’s site that I provided. Obviously that concept just didn’t click with some.

Just so you know, Sylvan doesn't deal with mental health issues. But there are places you can get help.

I would just like to suggest you speak to a health professional about your condition. You should have family members or close friends attend with you. They may be asked if they have concerns about your...

  • Delusions of grandeur (demanding that Purdue should out draw UM etc)
  • Hallucinations and illusions (People in your mind telling you the Purdue announced Sellouts weeks in advance)
  • Disordered thinking (See your above posts)
  • Inappropriate reactions (See your above posts)

It's okay to want Purdue to have great fan support, but the manner in which you do it, including you logic and unfounded bitterness and anger is cause for concern.
