Dickie V

Too bad we cannot "rewind" him to when he first came aboard doing games in the late 80's and 90's.....he was an excellent analyst. Then somewhere down the line.....he morphed into Dukie V thanks to the ESPN platform.

Some of his studio stints with Mr. Phelps were pure comedy circus shows.....if that's what you want to see.

In spite of all that, he does know his basketball.

I would only disagree to say that he once "knew" basketball (past tense) he is now 1 small step ahead of Lee Corso with college football. I just wish these guys would know when to step aside and get out of the business they just end up looking foolish.

I agree Tex, he was something else during that early period. And he does know his hoops, despite being blind in one eye and unable to hear out of the other. That was a fun time to be a kid/teenager and be into basketball.....things have gotten a bit more involved and complicated it seems. That, or we just know more about the behind the scenes than we used to...............or I'm getting old...........

Can't stand the guy...nor all of that NY smack (Digger, Rafferty, etc.) but I'll long remember his urging cowardly ND to play us home and home for BB series: "Has the potential to be an excellent IntraState rivalry. C'mon Deegah, play Puhduuuuu!"

One other thing I should have added in my original reply post is that Vitale has done a lot of charitable work, especially for the Jimmy V foundation. His schtick may have worn thin, and he's open to criticism, but I do appreciate all that he's done to help people.

So.....kudos "paisan."

I have met him twice, and he could not been more genuinely nice or pleasant. When I had written him a letter a few years ago about my oldest daughter for some insight regarding her and her tennis considerations, he was not only exceptionally helpful, he sent a signed copy of one of his books with an incredibly sincere and supportive note inside the cover. In addition, he had "shouted out" to my 9-year old son on either Twitter or Instagram a year ago on two separate occasions while out in San Francisco and more than made his day. His shtick or "act" may have worn thin with a lot of people, but I have had great interactions and experiences with him, he does a TON of charitable work, he is GREAT with fans, and I think quite highly of him and what he has done with his career.

I had a video of him doing "The Game of Life" (1991) where he spoke to high profile players. I really liked the video and saw him as a great guy...I just don't want the hype during the game.

I never understood why he didn't weigh 400 lbs. He would always talk about eating at restaurants with the top players and their families of each team the night before or the day of the games. Covering about 40 games per year, that would amount to some heavy eating during the season. (HE NEEDS A TO - shouted loudly!)..

Isnt there a website where all the AP ballots are postes so you can find out who is snubbing your team for no reason and blow them up on twitter. A few years back there was some deuche out west that never voted for Purdue...even though the rest of his ballot matched the rest of the writers.

I saw Dickie V speak at a corporate event a few years ago and he was surprisingly good. He was really funny and has a pretty inspiring life story. I was very entertained.
