Darian DeVries to IU

IU fans trying to "prove" that IU made a good coaching hire on a Purdue message board is just futile and stupid. I'm not sure what the point is. You very well might be right, but trying to get anyone here to side with you is like a divorced woman telling her ex that he made a good choice with his next relationship. He very well may have, but how can she say that?

Speaking from experience of course.
This whole discussion with the IU ass hats is ridiculous. They're here on a PU board looking for some validation that their AD made a good choice. Good lord, what idiots. Why do they even care what PU fans think? If/when PU gets a new coach, the last place I would go to get validation would be an IU board.

Uh... It's a thread about the new coach, started by a Purdue fan. Do you not like to talk to fans outside of the Purdue bubble?

You bring nothing to the table. Anytime anyone brings up a negative about the guy or his experience you look to argue and just want everyone to agree it was a great hire. No idea why you care what anyone here thinks. Again, you're just here looking for validation. Little brother mentality.

When PU and CMP part ways, PU will hire one of their own.

No one is looking for validation. But holy hell use some common sense and logic. If Raphael Davis can, I think any Purdue fan can. And I can guarantee, Purdue fans would be stoked to have DeVries had Painter called it quits.

That’s not true. I wouldn’t be stoked at all. I believe we will get better. Paint ain’t leaving no dumpster fire like IU has.

It isn't about what's being left, it's about what is on the market. Painter had said he was retiring... Purdue isn't getting a Scott Drew or TJ Otz either. It'd be someone on the level of DeVries, Pope, Kelsey, McCollum, Wade(though Purdue would never pursue Wade).

Purdue will have a culture in place and Painterd replacement will fit into that culture.

Okay... So that somehow means they are stealing away a big time name? I'm talking right now. If painter said, I am retiring after the tourney, who is Purdue getting? I could actually see them going after Ben McCollum.

The best part about Reneau to Purdue is the anger the fan base would feel.

That said, I don't want him. I want to see us pickup a true 5. Someone like Drew Fielder or Owen Freeman.
I wouldn't be angry. I'd actually be kind of intrigued to see him and TKR play together. Purdue could put their initials on a block because they'd never leave there.

Purdue's next coach is PJ Thompson.

I have no idea who would be the best potential pick for Purdue and doubt that is known for a bit. As I said Reneau would help Purdue a LOT and could play alongside Trey easily (or split minutes with Trey) with the duo potentially better than the duo of Trey alongside Zach due to Trey being much better now. Still, he is not the best fit for this Purdue team.

What makes all this a bit confusing is not having an idea of how effective Jacobsen will be.
Jacobsen will definitely help Purdue. We know he is capable of tracking down players in help and blocking shots. We know he can play outside. We don't know how he will do against a physical 5 or if he will be a foul magnet. There is reasoned speculation that he will be a solid 5 man, but THAT is speculation and why I and most want a good 5 (maybe a 4 depending on strengths?) that can board and effectively defend an area and/or a person and yet holds the D on him say 12' or so.

Purdue's next coach is PJ Thompson.
Does he stay at Purdue or does he grab a small head coaching job before? Painter had the Southern Illinois job for a year. Then a year at Purdue as the associate head coach as part of ba transition plan. Does Purdue try that again or just go the Duke way?

Hey, I've dealt with cases where they spent over $100k on custody of a cat and eventually settled on a mediated agreement.

People are people. :D

I watch a lot of college hoops, and I can honestly say I couldn't tell you who Devries was. Hell, I thought he was black guy based on his name.

Wait.....what? I just got back from a work trip and saw iu hired some guy I've never heard of? I was under the impression that Stevens was a guarantee?
I was under the impression that it was going to be a "name" guy. You know, like Pearl, Stevens, Beard, etc, etc.

I think it's a solid hire for Indinia. Now, can he meet the unrealistic expectations of the fanbase? Time will tell. Interesting that DeVries son (Tucker) was put on ice after playing 8 game (maximum for a medical redshirt). So, gets WVU NIL and gets an additional year to play elsewhere. I'm in MVC country, and he was player of the year for two years. A good player that should help IU.
Tucker has NBA talent and will no doubt stick around long enough to help his dad make the top 4 in the Big Ten.

It isn't really about Indiana. Big name coaches just aren't leaving their jobs at all. That's how Kentucky and Louisville ended up at Pope and Kelsey. Pope went to two NCAA tourneys at BYU and didn't win a game. Kelsey was at Winthrop for 9 years and went to the tourney twice. Was at Charleston for 3 years, made the tourney twice and didn't win a single round of 64 game. The Drew's, Otzs, McDermotts just aren't leaving. I imagine soon Kansas will be going through the same once Self retires. Purdue in about 15-20 years will be going through the same thing.
Unlike the other teams you mention, Painter has a great coaching tree with backups ready to go. Much the same as Keady did. Purdue may not choose the correct one when the time comes but we have a very strong bench :)

This guy was apparently several spots down on the list as no one wants to coach there. Nevermind the Indinia fanbase has always told us that Stevens was begging to coach there....

The problem with Drake is the top teams in the MVC left, so did he flip Drake or did he just happen to be there and someone had to assume the position after the top left.
You mean replacing some of those teams with Murray State weakened the conference??
Current MVC: Bradley (9), Drake (8), Evansville (4), Illinois State (5), Indiana State (7), Missouri State (6), Murray State (18), Northern Iowa (8), Southern Illinois (10) , and UIC (3). Granted, losing Creighton was a big loss.

Losing Creighton was bad for the conference but that happened imafter the 2013 season. Drake still sucked for years after that.

Well, I thought it was only and 80%, but I never noticed an explanation for the 20% should Brad turn down this once in a lifetime event saturated with bright lights...even if that may be the only thing bright. It does get confusing. The hire should be an improvement for them.

I liken him to the Odom hiring. Like Odom, I have nothing bad to say about him. I just thought Indiana could do better. He doesn’t have the wow factor or the belief that he is a long term solution. I guess IU is just not the draw it once was.

If I was the IU athletic director I would have hired Steve Alford 20-25 years ago. Obviously his name has been named many times and he has had many opportunities to apply for the job. But he has maintained his distance and preferred to coach elsewhere.

I feel bad for West Virginia. They have a good program but seems to be a stepping stone for coaches with eyes going elsewhere!
Since Gregg Doyel enthusiastically endorsed him I think he will have a rough rough road ahead. Doyel is usually wrong on his predictions.
