i was listening to a local sports radio show in Fort Wayne shortly after Brohm was hired. Brohm was asked if any other coaches advised on his decision. He said, "I played for Danny Hope, and when I talked to him and told him my options, he practically stood on the table and said you have to go to Purdue".
I thought that was pretty decent of him - since we fired him.

Is there a podcast of that?

Good for Hope. Still think he gets too much crap for things that weren't really his fault. Keep in mind that he took us to back-to-back bowl games and that he was operating under conditions that were a step down from what Hazell operated under which were a big step down from what Brohm will have. Burke hired him and then didn't fully support him. IMO, he'd have every right to be bitter but sounds like he's moved past that.

Hope probably feels Purdue is a good place to coach now that there is a new AD.

Hope probably couldn't fathom getting $3.5 mil for assistants.

I don't think Hope and his assistants put together got 3.5 million. For some reason I have it in my mind that Hope himself made less than a million. Not sure if that is reality or just me mis-remembering.

Hope is a good guy! Sent an email to him a couple of years ago and received a very nice reply, no bitterness or hatred.

How far we have fallen from D. Hope and the Purdue vs. Oregon Game to now!!!!
Better days coming Boilers!!!

Good on CDH. Always thought he got a bit of a bum rap.

Love Coach Hope....always have and always will....wish he was still here.

Never understood why people ran him off....loved his grit and blue collar approach.

He loves Purdue and I loved his passion for his players....

I wish him well and hope he gets well soon, Happy Holidays!

Now, where have I heard that before...?
If MB would have just kept DH1 and allowed him to pump out MB budget seasons of 5-7 or 6-6 he would have been fine in the world of mediocrity.....but no...he had to get cute and think that he could when more with even less.....DH2. Burke owes DH1 and all Purdue fans an apology.

I think Hope would have had a really bad 2013. Not 1-11 bad, but 3-4 wins. Burke should have waited for that season to fire Hope.

The football program was being bled out. It was only a matter of time before we hit rock bottom. Swapping DH1 for DH2 accelerated the process. Ironically, if CJB is the coach we all hope he is, hitting rock bottom may have been just what this program needed.

Unfortunately, i agree. I remember when Cordova was hired someone from her old school posted on the JC site that she would destroy major sport athletics at Purdue. The poster wasnt far off.

Couldn't agree more my friend.....................

Back to Danny Hope - I'm really fuzzy on the details, but I recall a game where another coach pulled some kind of crap on one our players and Hope had our guy's back and there was a confrontation with the other coach. Seems like it was an offensive lineman...Someone help me out here...

Anyway, injuries and lack of institutional support, along with Hope not really being Big 10 ready in my opinion, doomed that era. But I always respected the hell out of him.

Danny Hope is pure class. I was a freshman his first year as HC, he gave a short speech at BGR and all I can tell you is the dude loves this school. I wanted him to succeed and I bet his players wanted him to succeed. He was hamstrung by budgeting burke and lack of experience. His first year isn't his best record, but I think it was his best year. He showed some serious flash and possibilities for purdue. The following 3 seasons were marred by mediocre recruiting and poor qb play. I was glad and hopeful for a coaching change. We picked up Hazel who just had the most famous thing in kent state since the vietnam war protest. He seemed like he could be the guy. But honestly I have very little connection with the man, after my 5th year senior season of him sucking it up and not even competing with any other teams I just didn't pay attention to him.

Danny hope may not have been a great coach, but his teams were exciting and played with emotion. Hazell's teams were dull and over thought out. Here hoping we that brohms with his offensive IQ and high intensity can finally lead us to a great season!

rich rod made a comment about one of his guys getting suspended for something that one of our OL guys also did, and wasn't suspended for. Then the B1G also suspends our guy, so when Hope and Rich rod met for the postgame handshake, Danny brought the O Lineman with him, and said something to the effect of "you got this kid suspended for a game- thanks a lot!"

Hope was a man's man, you have to give him that. I still smile when I think about him challenging a caller to his radio show to "come down to my office and tell me that face to face".

I said it at the time that I thought Burke got rid of Hope about a year too soon and the hiring of Hazell only confirmed that.

First of all, Hope had taken the team to back-to-back bowl games. Nothing spectacular but also not results that should get a Purdue coach canned.

2013 was a stacked schedule against us. IMO, it would have been much wiser to let Hope coach that season and he most likely would've fallen short of a bowl game. That would have been preferable to throwing any new coach to the wolves with that roster and that schedule.

The fact that we didn't land one of our top choices and ended up with Hazell only further exasperated that situation and the results we are still feeling today.

I've always felt that firing a coach isn't about that coach. It's about getting the right guy as your next coach. I was concerned we were making the same mistake with transitioning away from Hazell but I fully believe that Brohm was one of our top choices, if not THE top choice. He and Fleck were the two that would have been at the top of my list anyway.

I had a chance to talk to Danny a number of times at his call in show and he was always a great man to speak to. Loved Purdue and cared deeply about his players both on and off the field. I think the confrontation with DickRod after the UM game showed that and had he been given the necessary budget, he could have had some decent success (probably a max of 7 to 8 wins a season and average about 6 overall).

Pool of attainable guys was a bit better had Hope gotten year five. Some of the options;

-Dino Barbers
-Dave Clawson
-Craig Bohl
