Dane Fife Return To Being A Loosier

I thought Fife was the coach in waiting at MSU. I guess not?

Fife isn't Indiana. Never really was. Horrible choice but Mike Lewis turned them down to stay at UCLA.

If Fife were smart, he’d have not turned his back on Painter after he gave him an assistant job. Prob would be a head coach by now.

Looks like a good move to me by the Hoosiers. Solidify fan and Knight support by hiring Woodson, bring the AD along with Matta, succession plan with Fife. That looks like a 3 pronged approach that will bring Hoosier Nation together. Glad Painter has a head start!

Maybe whizz told him that he isn’t... a coaching waiting?

Actually, this is the first sensible thing IU has done to dig out of their Miller-mess.
Hey-all flaming aside, let’s hope this is a return to the 1970s/1980s era of the two Indiana state schools routinely fighting for domination in the Big Ten.

Purdue is kinda guaranteed to be very good for the near future. It will be nothing short of fantastic to have these two teams and the rivalry fighting at the top of the heap.

Wow. You have been watching this board waiting to pounce on the first thread. And you wasted no time. What more needs to be said about the pathetic state of your program, which is mirrored by the pathetic state of your fanbase. Wow.

I hope IU fails big time, but yes the rivalry is fun. Several friends and family are IU and Purdue fans and both programs have a nice history. Obviously, we’d like to hang a banner some day, so I hope Painter gets all the Indiana recruits he wants. Respectfully, best of luck to Woodson.

3, 2, 1, and BoilerAndy has lift-off! Lol

I don't see Fife helping at all. He was a horrible coach at IPFW, and has worked for the biggest cheat in the conference.
He was lead recruiter on Jaren Jackson and Malik Hall - I would say that he did a solid job getting those two players we thought we were in the lead for.

Perhaps he sucked at IPFW but maybe he isn’t cut out to be a HC. Some do better in a secondary role v the chief.

Probably a good move for him. The chances are higher he gets promoted at IU than at MSU. If/when Woodson is not good enough they can move Fife up and Woodson will have an excuse to leave and they won’t have to fire one of their own.

Looks like they are grooming him to be their next head coach. Old man Woodson probably only has 3-5 years left in him. Good luck Loosiers. LOL...

Interesting how the IU administration publicly avoided the RMK coaching tree and now are going all in. When you've hit bottom, realize what you're doing isn't working. Make a change. There are 3 possible results.

1) You go up.
2) You stay at the bottom.
3) You find a new bottom.

I believe Mr. Beef may be onto something. How long has Fife been an assistant for Gizzo? (that's a hard G) I am guessing on the order of 10-12 years? Maybe more? Matt's assistants do not last that long before heading off for a program of their own. Unless, as has been speculated about Brantley, he loves what he is doing and working for Matt fulfills him so he does not aspire to anything else.

So that leads to two possible scenarios for Dane:

1- he does not in his heart really want to be a head coach so the head-coach-in-waiting idea may not be ideal for him

or

2- no one considers him to be good head coaching material (except the IU brain trust with their x-ray vision into a man's soul). It seems significant that in all this time with all the success the program has had during Fife's time there that he has never found a head coaching slot of his own.
It has been thought for a long time he was in the batter's box behind Tommy boy. This would seem to put paid to that idea- I really can't see leaving the MSU gig with it's resources and record of success if he was indeed the heir apparent for a job that could easily find you out on the street in a couple years along with this latest "greatest coaching hire ever" to come a cropper at Indiana. This is a huge gamble for Fife at the least.

The way IU is dropping all of this news on the day of the championship game just reaks of trying to appear relevant. We all know our team will start the year top 15 this upcoming season and it appears IU will have the same 10th place team again, with the added bonus of TJD trying to go right and heaving 3 pointers.

Stephens has taken over as the lead recruiter for Izzo and seems to be the next in line for the Head position

He recruited those to Meetchicken and Izzo. Not IU and Woody.

Does everyone here remember when Fife was hired by Painter and had been on the job for over a week before he reneged and went to MSU? What a douche.
I think Matt told he would have to work to earn his salary his money. That probably soured him a bit.

When has has Brantley ever said he aspires to nothing more than being an assistant? Seems odd to speculate he doesn’t want to become a head coach one day.

I don’t know if that is true or not but he certainly seems content in his role and what he does at Purdue for Painter. Based on the turnover by assistants under Painter, I would assume he has listened to opportunities but decided that he likes where he is at. Just speculating.

This can only end one of two ways. The super coaching team quickly returns IU to its perceived glory days or IU wanders in the desert for 40 years and the beloved become pariahs never to be spoken of again. We'll know more in a few tomorrows.

Huge difference is Fife left a Hall of Famer and joins a rookie that has never been at this stage of coaching. Yes, assistant coaches are a huge piece of the teams success but we have Painter and MSU still has Izzo. I don't believe Izzo was to concerned over this loss.

IU still has the players that never progressed in their own game. Purdue is definitely in a higher position for success.

Yeah, no nervous laughter at all...again, a guy hired literally ONLY because he happened to attend the same school as the guy that got the real gig for the same reason.

Fife was a glorified assistant at MSU...just more of one now...which, is why it is general laughter and not nervous laughter at all.

The only thing that made it even more amusing was the completely ridiculous "good bye" to MSU...the "Spartan Forever" that literally is no longer a Spartan...good to know he is as delusional as the rest with the commitment to hanging #6...hopefully he is more committed than he was when he "played" there.

Frankly, they could hire every former player (essentially they have)...it is irrelevant...as, they all are hanging on to something that happened 45 years ago (and, that is about to go by the wayside this evening ironically...by a genuine national program that has a respected coach and has developed from what it once was to what it now is). It is what will make this failure more enjoyable than the others...because, this time "it is personal"...or at least it is for all of you clowns.

I think this is a solid hire by Woodson. Fife has gotten some solid kids out of Ft Wayne and has learned a lot under Izzo. Will be curious to see who else he brings onto his staff.
Come on, Fife did not get anyone out of Ft. Wayne...Izzo got guys...Fife may have been involved, but, it is not as if it had been Stephens or Garland had recruited the same guys that the results would have been any different.

And, for what it is worth...let me know who from the Izzo tree of coaches has gone on to succeed. The crazy thing is, the most successful may be Crean.

The Israelites endured 40 years of wandering in the desert for the non-believers to die off.

In this case, the 40 years would need to occur for the delusional... well, you know.

Just sayin'...
