The metamorphosis of Purdue
Back in the day, as a young coach at Indiana, my fellow assistants and I would root like mad for whoever was playing Purdue. The Boilermakers would frequently struggle in the non-conference season, and we'd rejoice and plan our forthcoming dominance. Then something odd would happen. Purdue would get better, they would get tougher, they'd start playing great defense and winning games. My fellow IU assistant Ron Felling used to call this "The Metamorphosis of Purdue." It's back, folks.
Purdue is playing like the Purdue of Gene Keady -- defending, improving and winning. A.J. Hammons, the enigmatic center, is playing with real enthusiasm and making a case for Big Ten Defensive Player of The Year honors. Rapheal Davis is playing like the ghosts of Tony Jones, Ryan Berning and Porter Roberts. Davis has been exceptional, averaging 18.4 points in his last five games while defending, rebounding and above all leading. Purdue has won four in a row, including three against teams in the Top 25. It's a tough road ahead, but the Boilers are finally playing like the Boilers of old.
