There have been many times Painter was upset with the play of his players. But never did he ever publicly berate them. Even when a player quits on painter and shocks him by unexpectedly transferring, painter says, I wish him well.
The only other coach I can remember who ever berated his players was coach Karl. He won a lot of games for the Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets and a couple of other teams. He coached a lot of hall of fame caliber players, but I doubt he ever won a championship. I recall one night in supposedly an effort to motivate his team, He singled out 3 players at a press conference and threw them under the bus. After that night, you rarely saw the players listening to him in huddles and their overall performance went down the tubes. And he was fired at the end of the year. And some other team hired him.
Locker rooms are one thing. But as a coach, you never berate your players publicly. That motivation style doesn’t work.
I don’t recall Bobby knight ever berating his players publicly. He would berate a lot of things. The same was true of Jim beihiem at Syracuse.
