Colvin...

I just don’t understand why we went into this season with our situation at the 5. Painter’s been watching these guys for years, how would he not see the gaps for this year and reach into the portal? He was willing to at the 3 last year.
The Jacobsen injury was a big curveball here. I also think that Painter was taking a multi-year view on this.

Maybe...and this is a guess like all of us make....Matt doesn't believe the game performance mirrors what he sees in practice and believes some experience and confidence will provide what he needs? The 3 spot was much more a blaring issue than the 5 this year. In the FDU debacle, it was very noticeable that a 3 that could handle the ball and defend...especially handle the ball was needed. The D additive just allowed a smidgen of rest for Braden. THAT was crucial. Many on here believe that just a simple switch to Trey eliminates the 5 concerns and so I believe that 3 was much more of a concern than the current 5...and remember with some experience what many thought Daniel could do...and losing him was not expected either. FWIW, Matt has said he thought he had the best front line in the country a few weeks ago.

That multiyear view started with Trey getting a lot of minutes last year. Imagine if Trey was just now starting to get some comfort. I pointed out such last year when Trey was at the four and the experience it would provide when Zach was gone.

I have had that thought too. But @ the time wasn't our roster overly full??

Still, imagine this team with Clifford Omoruyi who left R for AL. Watch him tonight, and tell me about our FF team chances again with him @ the 5. Pretty good imo.
Clif would have been a good fit but I also think the 7 ft er that Mich from Yale ( Wolf ) would have been good too.

There are a thousand "coulda/shoulda,"s .... but we have what we have. I'm lovin' it .. every other team in the country has a thousand coulda/shoulda,"s ... and they are all stuck with what they got --- not many with what we got

Lacking a secondary ball handler in that lineup. I dont' think Colvin or Heide have a lot of confidence in their ball handling. A team with good on ball pressure would create problems for that lineup.
It’s my favorite lineup too and those 5 had the most minutes individually, but agree on the ball handling and late in games and other press situations having cox or Harris in there makes more sense.

i wouldn't say we were overly full because Painter showed he was willing to go over the scholarship limit. Regardless, Painter didn't need a class of 5 freshman, he could have stayed at 4 freshman and dealt with obvious holes in the roster through the portal.

But, completely agree. Also, we wouldn't even need someone like Cliff, just some middle of the pack transfer center I think would make a huge difference and set us up better for a run. And why couldn't Purdue pitch that center?

The only thing I can think of is he was all in on the two-year plan and wanted to give Jacobsen this year to develop for a run next year. But man, that's such a big risk and feels like a waste of a year with Braden and Fletch, not even mentioning the injury to Jacobsen.
Welllll…. Do ya trust Paint yet?!
