Colvin and Heide yikes

Nah Colvin is supposed to be a sniper. But he’s just not, at least not now. I’d trade him for the Wheeler we had without hesitation right now.

He looks like the gif of the dude grabbing balls off the rack and chucking them over the backboard
The kid is seven games removed from a 14 for 31 start to the season including 2 of 4 against NU and you’re writing him off. Classy.

My man you can take that “classy” comment and shove it. This dude hasn’t made a shot since Ole Miss and just looks bad. Sorry, but there are expectations. I was told here that the kid should be starting over Loyer. Lol

GTFU, you sound like a guy who lives in his mom’s basement. Most shooters go through rough patches, you don’t have to like it but no one cares about your expectations.

BTW, he was 2-4 from deep two games ago, at least try to sound like you know wtf you’re talking about.

Y’all are right. There’s no issue here, Colvin is the man. He’s not 3 of his last 23 from three over the past 7 games. 31% on the year for a guy who has no game other than catch and shoot from deep. It’s all good.

In reality, he’s already gained and lost a starting spot, now he’s playing himself out of the rotation. It is what it is.

Still 31% even after going 3/23 recently? Hmmm…sounds like a shooting slump to me. But sure, let’s take Wheeler who was 21.6% his entire sophomore year.

Hyperbole doesn't look good on you.

Weird. You were expecting Colvin to start alongside Loyer, no?
This board has been dreaming of that for a long time. But unless a big miraculously earns the starting 5 spot, the reality is that both Loyer and Colvin both are almost certainly starting.

Yes but that's not what many here wanted. I've been in the minority around here saying that Loyer is a 4 year starter.

I didn't expect for the frosh guards to be better right away, and I thought Colvin would have developed a bit more.

I have said and thought Loyer would be a 4 year starter as well. No way will Paint take that away from him and Fletch knows everything inside and out (similar to Smith) about how Painter runs his system on both sides of the ball. Plus hes a near 50% 3pt shooter and is very savvy on offense, and solid on defense.

I believe that has been the majority opinion. Some may not have been happy about it, but they understand Painter's history. And sometimes the minority is just more vocal.

CMP is constantly reevaluating everything.

But outbidding the IUs and Kansas’s in the portal is probably not happening.
Don't have to outbid, just have to find the right pieces. Like Jones last year. I think he will look in the portal for next year but he seemed content to see if Colvin, Heide could make the jump he needed. Don't think either have so he may look for a wing this summer that can play the 3.

I don't think Painter was looking for the same thing from Myles and Cam that outsiders think he was. Those guys have to defend, rebound, and hit open shots. I don't think MP expected them to be either featured scorers who get sets run for them or guys who had to be able to get their own shot. Looks like Cox is the guy on the roster now who is that fourth 'scorer'.

That doesn't mean that they don't get someone in the portal and everything changes if guys leave, but I don't think a wing is the highest priority.

The trick for Colvin or Heide is consistency. Nice game , now repeat with 8-15 points, decent shooting percentage, a few boards, good defense etc.
8-15 points with 8 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals combined. It’s a bit of a stretch to ask for them each to get 8-15 points or just one of em. That would mean they’d shoot near 100% from the field and if that happened, that would mean they should be one of the top 3 scoring options.

Possible but I think those two kept him away from the portal. Was that a good decision or not? Depends. If Purdue were able to snag a top portal wing, where does that move Purdues highest potential? Say Purdue somehow has a spot open and grabs Adou Thiero(Arkansas) or Desmond Claude(USC). I'd say that changes Purdue outlook a lot. Not that it matters because Purdue is still good, but interesting to think about.

Purdue didn't have room for a portal add without Creaning someone.

Are those guys willing defenders and rebounders who are ok being the fourth scoring option? Does either have another year of eligibility left after this season? I honestly don’t know but those would have been real considerations.

Agree that if MP wasn’t high on Cam and Myles he would have been more likely to pursue a portal wing.

Claude would have walked in and been a Top 3 scorer. Hard to say about Thiero but I'd say he'd be the #2 or #3 scorer. Claude is averaging 16-4-4. Not a good shooter from 3 but he's 6-6 and has been playing PG for USC. A kid that could definitely play 1-3 kinda like Jones did, but bigger. I'd say at Purdue, he'd play as good of defense as Colvin just a way way better scorer. Theiro is a great defender that'd play the 3-4 spot. Not a good 3pt shooter but is averaging about 18ppg and would benefit playing under Painter and with Smith. Shooting percentages would probably bump up for each guy a little bit just because of having Smith as a playmaker.

As for eligibility, he played 2 years at UK, so would have 2 years left. Claude played 2 at Xavier.

But that’s where you don’t understand that paint already knows who his 2-3 best guys are. So the guys that come in, need to know they won’t be the 2-3 top scorer.

Claude isn't a better scorer than Braden or Loyer in Purdue's system, he just isn't, and wouldn't have supplanted TKR as a top-three scoring option. Thiero is even further from supplanting any of those three as scoring options.

Do guys like that raise Purdue's ceiling if they are willing to come in and not be a featured scorer? Probably, although either's three-point shooting would be problematic.

Typical IU approach to focus on measures and stats and ignore fit. Not surprising that they don't understand or agree with the MP model

Why can't a guy come in from the portal and be the No 1 or 2 scoring option? People act like the combination of Smith, Loyer and TKR is the best 3 man combo in the country. Yeh, they've played pretty well but struggled against the tougher competition. No reason to think someone can come off the portal and earn a starting spot and earn the green light to score at will if that's their skillset.

They absolutely can, but the reality is that they vast majority of portal options wouldn't be. Who was Purdue going to realistically bring in that would be a better scoring option in Purdue's system than Smith, Loyer, and Trey?

I'll go back to Jones last year.
He was a high volume shooter and scorer coming from SIU. On paper, he wasn't a great fit. But he turned out great and was an important piece of the puzzle.
I just don't believe all this fit, culture, etc. Sure, if during the interviews, the guy eliminates himself, fine, but Painters job is to take those pieces and mold them into a team where guys understand their role.
If Painter found a 6'5 ball handler who can shoot, create, get their own shot, etc, and his role is primarily to be the 1 or 2 scoring option, then Painter will figure out a way to use his strengths.

Painter isn’t going to recruit over the big 3. When will you learn?

I don't know that anyone is arguing against that. As I posted above, a tiny percentage of available players are going to make the team better by being a scoring option above Trey, Braden and Fletch. If they can land one of those guys, awesome, and I agree that Painter would do it.

The vast majority of portal options would need to take a more complimentary role.

Benter will be impactful next year I think. You can't discount kids that aren't successful as sophs right away. Plenty of very fine players that didn't put it together till they were upperclassmen. I'm sure Paint will weigh all the options. But I also won't be worried if they stand pat.
