Watching Alabama lose a couple receivers to injury in this game, it makes me wonder if we will start seeing players opt out of the playoff.

Sounds crazy, but do you think a Ryan Kerrigan would trade his NFL career and earnings for a national title? Would a Raheem Mostert or other skill players?

I would say no, they wouldn’t trade that. And while we can’t know if any of these guys will have that career, we do know that an injury could prevent them from having that.

NIL is a wildcard, but I’m not sure that’s is enough of a factor. It’s not supposed to have anything to do with performance, though it seems like anything goes with NIL so far.

Then, if that happens, how long until guys opt out after 6-8 games? Less? Did Karlaftis or Bell really gain anything by playing the last 2 or 3 games of the regular season, especially the last couple? And once a couple guys do it, it just starts to become normal. Heck, guys are opting out of senior years of high school for a shot at NIL money so opting out of a couple college games for NFL money doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

Continuing down this rabbit hole, I’d imagine we’ll see more of the Caleb Williams situation going forward. Have a good year, put your name in the portal to test the waters. Maybe you’ll come back, but you’ll see every offer that’s out there. An elite school could kick those guys to the curb. Could a Purdue really do that? Could a Minnesota or Northwestern?

Texas A&M has set the bar pretty high for cost of a recruiting class. It’s scary to think where that will go. You think other coaches weren’t calling their donors the next day asking why they didn’t do something similar? What are all those other schools’ donors and coaches going to do next year to compete with that?

I don’t see how this gets better at this point for college football. And I’m fine with guys making money on autographs or legitimate appearances, etc. But we are already so far past that I’m not sure how the sport recovers. Bowl games are already deemed meaningless. Most bowls have had poor attendance.

I think it’s safe to say peak college football is behind us, but just how much?
