As part of the ongoing fallout from Iowa firing head coach Fran McCaffery, the Hawkeyes have now lost the commitment from one of their highest-rated recruits in the modern era.

Consensus four-star small forward Joshua Lewis is reopening his recruitment following McCaffery's firing. Rivals ranked Lewis as the nation's No. 37 player overall, which would have made Lewis the highest-rated player in the modern era to sign with the Hawkeyes if he had inked with Iowa.

Instead, the 6-foot-7, 185 pound small forward is reevaluating his recruitment.

"After careful consideration and discussion with my family, I have decided to decommit from the University of Iowa and reopen my recruitment," Lewis told 247Sports. This kid might know where he is going before decommit??

I prefer older portal players, but would be happy with either Iowa kid available at this time. We just need a couple starter quality kids.

I like the idea of bringing in an experienced portal player to back up Jacobsen.

But when you get a chance to add a player of this caliber, you have to go for it.

Look at Duke. They signed an experienced portal player named Gillis. And they signed a high school guy named Flagg to play the same position! Who was the greater contributor to their success this year? The portal player or the high school phenom?

If a guy has talent it doesn’t matter what his experience is.

The bigger question is with Psinter’s love of playing a 3 guard offense, would he actually change his philosophy and recruit a real small forward to play the 3?

I’d also love to add Sisley when he decommits form IU

We need proven D1 players. All in for next year. Not saying this kid isn't good, but we need proven players only.
Depends on numbers. Let's say we have four spots open due to departures plus the two extra openings, you could do three portal and then go after this guy. Of course, we don't even know if he would be interested or fits or whatnot.

Sounds a lot like 5* Tucker for old IU, how did he turn out, except this guy is only a 4 star! I don't understand when people drool over ball players that some fat guy with a clip board rated, like Painter said if these guys who rate these players were good at what they did, they would be coaching some where and Matt's history says he's right. Sisley made his choice, I don't want any part of him, good riddance! There is going to be a record amount of portal entries this year, the cafe is going to be open. Painter said the other day, the days of knowing the makeup of a team before the next season is over, most teams won't have a clue what their roster is until late in the summer. The amount of players planning on a education is dying! SAD

Look, if we can sign this kid AND get the portal experience we need, then of course do so. But I'm not counting any "extra" openings until we actually hear someone is leaving. In that case, we will have 3 openings. I would much prefer we get 3 experienced, known commodities from the portal. I trust CMP to get the right guys from the portal that will give us the best shot to win a title next year.

This kid isn't Cooper Flagg, short of that kind of player, I would much rather have experienced D1 players next year to go with our existing roster as we know it. We're already going to have 4 sophomores, a RS freshman and a true freshman. That is enough "youth" give us some experienced studs to go along with them.

He won’t be much help next year. Not with that weight.

Held this in long enough. Would love to see Flory contact CMP and express his desire to spend his final college year closer to home.
Haven’t seen him in any 2025 mock drafts but he’s middle 1st round in 2026 drafts. His rim protection and defense coupled with TKRs offense feels to me like an excellent combination.

I’d say he’d stay 2 and then become a lotto pick under coach B!

I hadn’t heard Flory’s name in a while.

I’m not suggesting Sisley or the 2 guys from Iowa because they were given 4 stars by a recruiting service. I’m suggesting their names because Painter really wanted Sisley. I’m suggesting the two players from Iowa because I trust their coach had a very good eye for talent as well.

I find it interesting that some of you applaud those analysts when they give a Purdue commitment a high rating but you badmouth those same people when they give ratings to others. Looking back, how accurate were they? They seem to have been spot on in their assessment of Flapp. I’m not sure how accurate they were in their assessment of Newman, Coleman, Harris, Morton, Mathis, Furst, tkr, Perry Eastern, Catchings, Gordon, And many others.

There have been many 5 star athletes who were total flops. That said, I’m unsure if there is a better evaluation tool. I do know Painter has identified many superstars early in their high school program. Painter loved JJJ recruited Dickinson and the bigs that ended up going to Creighton and Gonzaga. He recruited many guards early in their high school that went elsewhere. It seems like many other schools wait for painter to identify a player and then start recruiting them.

ESPN has come out with a top 50 draft list which includes Braden… not sure what number, haven’t read it because still at work lol.

Ah it was for top 50 in March madness. But it says he’s 38th:

“Smith, the Big Ten Player of the Year, has turned heads from a pro perspective in spite of his major limitations with size (170 pounds) and physicality. He starred this season with Zach Edey off to the pros and Purdue playing a more guard-friendly style, shooting close to 40% from 3 on good volume and leading the conference in assists.

One of the toughest and smartest floor leaders as a junior, Smith could likely make more money returning to college but has forced NBA scouts to think harder about his candidacy as a potential depth player. -- Woo”

"potential depth player" translation: Not a 1st rounder and probably not 2nd rounder.
Right now.

He’s got a bit to work on for the next level. I think he can do it in this offseason, though. Will take a lot of work but kid has proved a TON of ppl wrong already. He’s like Zach in that mentality.

But for now, let’s see what he’s got for the tourney!

Yes, right now. Isn't that what the article was talking about? None of us know what his draft stock will be a year from now.
