Agreed .... I am very familiar with a similar situation (passed out in a car on a public road with no one else in it) and it went a LOT worse that his did. There are certain assumptions that can be made.Basically that means he's out for the Villanova game which sucks for him and the team but to me it seems right that he get a longer suspension than Smotherman because he didn't tell Coach Painter about it and because the circumstances lead a reasonable person to believe he was likely operating the vehicle under the influence even though he was fortunate not to be charged with such.
Seems odd to me. Something else had to come to light.
No kiddingHe has a huge doghouse to get out of now.
I actually have a question about this. A lot of people on this board claim they 'know of' Ryan's parents and they share that they are good people. No kidding
Digging his hole deeper at every turn apparently
Imagine the amount of running/team punishment will be a cake walk compared to what his folks think
No you weren't.I was an athlete at Purdue in the mid 90's in a non-revenue sport.
how long until he transfers?I'm not surprised it was expanded. I have been saying for days now that this was not a "just smoking weed" incident. That police report was pretty scary. Combine that with him possibly withholding info from CMP and you get a longer suspension.
He has a huge doghouse to get out of now.
Would a non athlete on academic scholarship have his or her scholarship pulled for something like this? Honest question.
Instead of relying on coaches shouldn't the schools step up and police these situations? IMO anyone who is clear to go to class and work toward a Purdue degree is clear to play basketball. No, the coach should obviously not withhold evidence or cover up anything, but it shouldn't be up to coaches to police off the court issues. The only exceptions should be team policies that address behavior detrimental to the team.
how long until he transfers?
I was an athlete at Purdue in the mid 90's in a non-revenue sport. We would have been dismissed immediately for this. I cannot believe how much rope BB and FB players get.
Ya I think I'm more confused, the more we knowI actually have a question about this. A lot of people on this board claim they 'know of' Ryan's parents and they share that they are good people.
That said, if this happens to your D1 basketball playing son, and this happens in July.
How do you not follow up with, "Well Ryan, what did the guy who gave you a D1 basketball scholarship have to say about this?"
"Oh, gee mom and dad -- I never thought to tell him."
"Oh that's okay Ryan, be sure to make mention of it come October?!?!?!"
Great post and you are exactly correct.Really?? Bc my BFF&E from HS was a full-ride non-revenue sport athlete in the mid-90s at Purdue, and he failed about 20 drug tests (((evil weed))) and was never kicked off the team. He just had to take tests more frequently, and he failed about every third one. He was pretty damn good tho. He also got a couple PIs, and we got into a big fight at Jake's one night, but the cops just let us go.
Secondly, non-revenue athletes would have never got the pub or attention that Cline is getting bc no one gives a flying F. So no, you probably wouldn't have gotten anything but a lighter suspension bc you're a college kid that drank too much and smoked some dope and made a mistake. If that's some kind of character defect, then 99% of college kids qualify.
He made a mistake, he got a firm suspension, move on. I'm sure he's being harder on himself than anyone else can be.
If it happens again, then it's time for the real red flags to go up.
Is it confirmed that his parents knew??Ya I think I'm more confused, the more we know
If his parents, and half of Carmel (apparently) knew
It's amazing that word did not travel to the team in any way
I'm shocked how lenient Hamilton County was. To only get charged with possession and not OWI? Also, be able to get deferment? Hamilton County doesn't do deferment very often.
Isn't every Purdue student potentially an ambassador for the University? Isn't this why schools are policing what students post on social media, what fraternities are doing on weekends, etc? Why hold non athletes to a lower standard? And why have a different set of rules for who is responsible for policing athletes? It should be on the school to determine whether he violated any code of conduct and what is the appropriate punishment, not the coach. I think a lot of these problems we see would be better addressed if someone outside the athletic program was administering the justice instead of leaving it up to the coach.I disagree with this completely. An athlete at a university is not just any student going to class. When an athlete puts on that "Purdue" on his shirt and walks on to the field or court or whatever, he/she represents the university; that athlete represents all the students and staff there now, and he/she represents us alumni. There is a responsibility to putting on that jersey. I believe this should be true for high school, college, and I even believe it for the pros too (That Ray Lewis was allowed to continue his career was an amazing statement about the Raven's ownership and Baltimore as a city as far as I'm concerned.)
I don't care how good Jamis Winston was. I would rather go 0 and 11 for three years in a row than have Jameis Winston playing Saturday in a Purdue jersey. That the university just covered up every thing he did says volumes about the real priories of the administration and fans at FSU.
I'm not saying Cline should be thrown off the team, but don't tell me athletes (especially athletes in high profile sports) are like every other student at Purdue. They are not. Purdue athletes are role models and representatives of all us who are associated with Purdue. It's up to that athlete to be a positive role model or I, at least, don't want him at Purdue
If we're not going to blow it out of proportion then we also can't minimize it. This was more than just a college kid with some weed in his pocket or getting high in his apartment. He was passed out in a running car close to a state highway. I don't think it takes Perry Mason to figure out he drove that car while impaired (very impaired it sounds like). While he might not have been charged with OWI he certainly posed a serious threat to himself and who knows how many other people traveling that road.He wasn't technically Operating the vehicle, he was sitting in it.
Deferment for first offenses is extremely common. Esp simple possession. I deal with kids like this all the time.
Anything else you'd like to blow out of proportion??
I don't think he should be dismissed from the team, but I don't think it's blowing it out of proportion to say he was very lucky the prosecutor didn't go after more serious charges.
Well, he would have lost if he had gone after more serious charges, bc there really weren't any. At least, none that a somewhat capable attorney couldn't fight off with one hand tied behind his back.
Legal/criminal charges (what I was responding to in the post above), and the severity/issue of the actions themselves are two different things. Determining whether or not there is a "real" red flag substance problem, or if it's just a college kid making a big mistake, can't really be known from the information we have. As part of his consequence, I'm sure Ryan will have to speak to some therapist type people and discuss this aspect of it. Maybe go to an NA/AA meeting or three. That's pretty typical.
Is this concerning?? Sure. Will he learn from it?? I sure hope so. Was there anything more criminal/chargeable than simple possession?? No, at least IMO nothing else that would have stuck.
Was he in a parking lot and or away from a road or was he actually parked along a road? I have heard conflicting info.
Only fields and a few driveways in that areaWas he in a parking lot and or away from a road or was he actually parked along a road? I have heard conflicting info.
Do we know that CMP wasn't forced into this? I thought the 1st punishment was crazy lenient from what I knew. If Painter came to his senses, good for him.Good for CMP
Just a scenario, but if he indeed went to phish concert, party to the wee hours in parking lot, leaves concert area, then figures out going home was a bad idea. Very tired, high and couldn't stay awake. Parked the car, fell asleep trying to figure out what to do and left the engine running. There is some really nasty weed at Phish, just saying.
That's all speculation at this point. Klipsch is in the same county but it's not that close to where he was. Could've just as easily been at a friend's house or any of dozens of scenarios.
