Chicago fun!

I've lived in far southern IL for 22 years and have traveled to the Chicago area on business and pleasure several times in the past. For a nine month period about 10 years ago I drove my daughter and grandson to the western burbs weekly for his medical treatment. It's been about seven years since I've been to the city and have no desire to ever return there in this lifetime.
My wife and I loved to go downtown for the weekend and take the L to a Cubs game. Felt safe walking on any street in the area of Mich Ave. Haven't been there for 5 to 7 years now and probably would no longer be a destination for us...

Unless you plan on joining a gang or causing trouble, every normal place is fine to stay in. Ignore the people who haven't been out of their shelters from small towns that don't know the world.

Chicago isn't even in the top 20 (almost not even top 30) for murder per capita. Actually Indy has a higher murder per capita rate, but they stick their head in the sand for that.

99% of the gun violence is gang related and so far from main/tourist part of Chicago it may as well be suburbs.
Per capita doesn't mean jack crap. If the small town I live near had one murder, it would be a higher per capita murder rate than Chicago. But it also doesn't have car jackings, smash and grabs, muggings, rape, etc..., which you don't tend to include in your post...

Serious question. Do you actually live IN Chicago? Not like Hinsdale or Deerfield. Or even NWI. I mean in city proper, And if so, what neighborhood?

I don’t want to be spending time correcting somebody with a “Hate has no home here” sign on their Naperville lawn ignoring the fact that we now have metal detectors and a perimeter around millennium park due to constant shootings and a curfew. Oh and shootings and mobs at Oak Street Beach and North Ave. Add the community alert to now “youths” are knocking people off bikes and stealing them on the lakefront.

So where in Chicago do you live so I can give you your PD district stats specifically.

Where are safe areas around Downtown Chicago to stay overnight if going to Lurie Childrens Hospital
To give you an accurate answer the area is still “safe” and the Hospital is very controlled. But beware of your surroundings. Drive with doors locked and when in a parking garage always be aware of people in and around you. Car jackings are very real and most often conducted by minors who will be tried as juveniles by the court system and given “supervision.”

I.e. it is not a crime for you to use common sense.

Chicago still has a ton to offer but know it is not what it use to be. And that’s why we are leaving after 25 years in Lakeview.

Any of the areas close to Lurie in the core downtown area would be fine. Loop/Mag Mile/River North, etc.

O’hare area is a bit farther out but is fine as well (depending on when you are going, sometimes you can get really good deals in that area … but that’s not really close to Lurie.)
Unfortunately in Chicago now, you have to use your street smarts even in areas that used to see very little violence or crime,
Be aware of your surroundings, who's looking at you, who's behind you, etc.

Chitcago sucks but name one place in the world where being aware of your surroundings isn't indicated.

very true. But, now, in areas like the Mag Mile, Gold Coast, River North, Oak St Beach, you have gangs of roaming thugs assaulting/robbing people with little fear of law enforcement. They've been emboldened by an antipolice, anti-law enforcement local govt, mayor and DA. Gee, what a surprise that this happened......

i miss the good ole days of Chicago machine politics when the Daley's ran things. Despite being Dems, they at least kept the $hitheads in their place and gave the police the authority to enforce the law and tune people up when needed.

You forgot beating and torturing confessions out of people that had no connection to the crime.
