Can’t live life scared, bad things happen in cities/towns and where there are more people means more desperate people and the greater the potential for bad things to happen.

I had an opportunity to give a great old friend and his wife what amounted to, in tickets and the house I had rented alone +$3000, not including food and drink, all they had to do was get there. It was for the second week of Jazz Fest in New Orleans last weekend. They declined, because of their Fox News fears of the “mayhem” they have heard about in New Orleans. I give them credit, they stuck by their political beliefs and fears, but man did they miss a great weekend of music, food, art, fun… I gave the opportunity to others who have been profuse in their appreciation of the experience. None of us, and my wife and I were there for both weekends, and had friends the first weekend as well, who also were overwhelmed by the experience, not one of us was car jacked, mugged, beaten, robbed… just came back a little sun burnt.

I’ll be in Indiana later this summer. I will enjoy it, being with my family and old friends but my wife and I will also “risk our lives” enjoying a weekend in Chicago before we come back to South Carolina.

I somewhat agree to what you are saying, but things are way worse than reported. Last week my friend was driving in Chicago and at a stop light a guy passes him on a curb sideswiped his car and two others. Kind of ruined his good time.

Another friend of mine drove downtown only to have his car all keyed up during his good time. This stuff is hitting to close to home for me so it’s just not worth it for us to go to Chicago anymore. We haven’t gone to Chicago for over two years now and won’t be going anytime soon.

Chicago has always had problems, but they used to be confined to the south and west sides. The Daley's kept the trouble-makers in line and the police force was allowed to do their job.
Now, Chicago has become so soft on crime that these animals go down Michigan ave in packs, attacking anyone and everything in their path with little fear of police retaliation. The city govt, including Mayor Beetlejuice and chipmunk cheeks don't have the guts to put an end to this for fear of being seen as race traitors and having to deal with people Jesse Jackson.
Talk to some of the retailers on Mich ave and other areas of Chicago and see if this wildness, whether real or perceived, has impacted their businesses (and no, it's not due to covid).

Getting harder for people to enjoy themselves from the crowds of troublemakers. Sad that law enforcement does nothing about it.

Will be attending a wedding downtown. We canceled the extra night we were planning on staying there. Strictly in and out and will be heading to the Petoskey MI area (Walloon Lake) to spend the rest of week there. Sad thing is this could be fixed if the politicians had the political will

Looks like it continued again this weekend.

There area around the Bean and Millenium Park is (was) a major tourist destination. That's really bad news for Chicago if the violence has spread to this area. Of course, it's already spread up Michigan Ave to the Mag Mile so this really shouldn't surprise anyone.

When's the BLM march to protest this latest shooting of a brother?

The libs don't want it fixed.
No Illinois Democrat has ever left office and went ro the poor house. Keep the $$$ rolling into social assistance programs and skimming it off by directing it to companies you own or those of good campaign contributors. If people in Chitcago really gave a damn they wouldn't elect box checkers like Lori Lightweight.

I live in the Cleveland area. In some ways it is like a much smaller Chicago. The key is to know where it is bad and leave yourself a big buffer between that and where you choose to live. Call it what you like, I like to call it smart and proactive.

I've lived in far southern IL for 22 years and have traveled to the Chicago area on business and pleasure several times in the past. For a nine month period about 10 years ago I drove my daughter and grandson to the western burbs weekly for his medical treatment. It's been about seven years since I've been to the city and have no desire to ever return there in this lifetime.

We used to go to Chicago a couple times a month for decades. Drove and took public transportation and never had a problem or thought about any danger. Haven’t gone for about 5 years now and like yourself no desire to return in this lifetime. Things are way worse now with issues happening to friends and friends friends. If things don’t change Chicago will continue to decline, as more companies will move out.

Chicago is on the verge of becoming another Detroit.

When Soros and Biden start the money flowing.

Where in Illinois do you live? Both of my parents are from the Mt Vernon area. During the Depression both sets of parents families moved to DeKalb area. After retiring my mom’s parents moved down south and retired in Salem

I lived the Detroit area for 21 years. Both places were adjacent counties. Detroit was a dump but the surrounding counties have nice areas. Only went to downtown Detroit on average 2 - 4 times a year (auto show and Tigers games). I can honestly say I don’t miss living there except the summers in Northern Michigan. I will say the Detroit metro airport is excellent. The sad thing is Detroit lifers still believe Detroit will return to its formerly glory but those days are history

I live between Herrin and Carterville. I came here in 2000 for a position at the VA in Marion. Not sure why I'm still here but while I'd have no problem getting a good price on my place I don't want to get wrapped up in a bidding war to move. The prime time might be coming since the construction of a destination casino 7 miles west of me should bring new money into the area.

The northside of Chicago, except for a few pockets like Rogers Park ($hithole) are relatively safe.
The west and south sides are war zones.

If the "buffer" includes suburbs then sure but if we're strictly talking north/west side of Chicago you run the risk of getting mugged/carjacked no matter where you live at this point. Criminals know CPD doesn't have the manpower and even if they get arrested they'll bond out the next day for $1k or less.

BLM won't show up in Chicago, unless a Black guy gets shot by a White cop. They're not interested, unless there's potential to extort a lot of money from some WOKE Corporations.

If they really believed that ALL Black Lives Mattered, they'd have a continual presence in Chicago, since it has become a killing ground for Black youth, yet you never hear of BLM being in Chicago. BLM is only concerned with their own Black Lives and living the good life, after capitalizing on White Guilt.

Al Sharpton has owed the IRS about $5 Million in back taxes for a couple decades. If it were one of us, we'd be in jail, but Sharpton gets a pass, because he'll play the race card and tell the world that the US Government is oppressing a poor Black man.

They're all Race Hustlers...

I won’t see it in my lifetime, but it will be interesting to see in 30 to 40 years what Chicago will look like. I agree with you 100%.
If the people of Chicago keep voting for Woke Dems, the city will burn. There is absolutely NOTHING that Woke Politicians do well, except cause chaos. As long as you announce your pronouns, acknowledge that people can self identify as virtually anything and worship at the Temple of Climate Change, then you're a God in Woke World.

It's mind boggling to think of the level of indoctrination required to make people believe the items in the highlighted sentence. It's even more mind boggling that the people, who bought into this ridiculous crap, don't believe they've been indoctrinated... smh

I would say more proactive than scared. I live near Cleveland. Cleveland has a bad rep nationally, mostly undeserved. I have been in Cleveland many times in the last 3 years. I sometimes hang out at a bar that is near downtown. No problem nor hesitation. However, I do know where not to go in Cleveland. That really is the point of this thread.

I lived in Chicago for 20 years in the 90's-2000's. In the city, not the burbs. I also worked on the south and west sides where most of the violence occurs.
While the violence used to be relatively confided to those areas, it's spread north into the commercial areas of downtown. This is bad for business, tourism, etc. It's also become so random that a lot of people don't want to risk the chance, albeit small, of getting caught up in it.

I love people like you who whistle past the graveyard because you are so woke you cannot see the world for what it is - you see it they say you desire it to be. I have lived on the north side since 1998. Started on Broadway when it was gritty but not “dangerous.” We are moving out of state, I forecasted this shit as did others when a woman with no prosecutorial background was bankrolled by George Soros to be the CC SA and her first action was to announce zero prosecution for retail theft $900 and under (“too busy to prosecute.”) You know what happened? Retail theft skyrocketed and businesses left. People loose jobs. City looses tax receipts. People leave. Simple example. Uncle Dans on Southport (a longtime local store) left after continuing to be hit. A car pulls up. 3 or 4 people jump out. Grab a Canadian Goose coat and leave. If arrested it’s a citation. Sorry public under $900. Now if you want to talk about car jackings in the middle of the day? Continuous. Mostly juviniles. All armed. But Foxx puts them in diversion and Lightfoot closes the JDC. Zero repercussions. Back the next day. Do it all over again. Cops get defunded. Patrice gets another mansion. Innocent kid gets shot at the bean and people on this board are eyes wide shut because they want their woke badge. Oh and I think we are over 60 for the year shot and or killed by somebody on “home confinement for violent offense.” Yeah bail reform!!!

Lets guess what color most of these people doing this are? Perhaps @BNIBoiler can enlighten us on this matter?

Where are safe areas around Downtown Chicago to stay overnight if going to Lurie Childrens Hospital
Unless you plan on joining a gang or causing trouble, every normal place is fine to stay in. Ignore the people who haven't been out of their shelters from small towns that don't know the world.

Chicago isn't even in the top 20 (almost not even top 30) for murder per capita. Actually Indy has a higher murder per capita rate, but they stick their head in the sand for that.

99% of the gun violence is gang related and so far from main/tourist part of Chicago it may as well be suburbs.

No, people are not sticking their heads in the sand about Indy. Plenty of people are upset about it and want Hogshit out.

Any of the areas close to Lurie in the core downtown area would be fine. Loop/Mag Mile/River North, etc.

O’hare area is a bit farther out but is fine as well (depending on when you are going, sometimes you can get really good deals in that area … but that’s not really close to Lurie.)
