Carsen Edwards

But, the perception is that CE 'lost' his starting spot because he wasn't being productive or was making too many mistakes. Otherwise, why would MP have made the change?
I highly doubt it was Carsen's idea to take him out of the starting lineup.
I just don't know why MP messed with something that wasn't broken, particularly in the last few games of the season.

Before Carsen started coming off the bench, his stats were:
Penn State: 1-8 shooting
Michigan State: 1-4 shooting
Rutgers: 3-11 shooting

That's a combined 5-23 shooting (22%).

Is that productive to you?

Your data is incomplete. You would need to list Cline's stats before the switch as well as both players stats after the switch as well as other important statistics like assists, rebounds, to's, steals and fouls.

No offense, but I'm not the one saying the current situation is worse than the previous situation. Going 5-23 shooting in the three games prior to getting benched sure seem like a reason that one could lose their starting spot.

Carsen's been great at times, but he's been inconsistent - and there's nothing wrong with it. Which is why he still gets to play significant minutes, particularly if he plays well. If he was so great and so consistent, he'd probably find himself on the all-freshman team, which he did not. Maybe that was Painter's fault too.

Cline may not be consistent from a scoring output, but you know what you're going to get on a pretty consistent basis, and it's typically not negative - just not super positive always. To have smooth starts to a game, that's worked.

I don't know the motivation behind the move, but it's grossly been made a much bigger deal than it is.

I too think it is much bigger than reality. He is playing about the same minutes. There are several coaches and I can guarantee Matt did NOT bench him on his own opinion without consultation from others...

I expect him to start and be overly athletic compared to Vermont and "WHEN" that happens I look for Carsen to be aware of things coaches have harped on and being a better player...and what better time to have a player with ability playing more effective than later in the season. Carsen will be fine and my money says he starts, but I think teh new blood will be welcomed by Carsen

Whatever happens, just don't start Cline over Carsen. We need someone faster defensively. That's all.
We need someone who will stay in front and not lose their man when they are off the ball. Example was when Carsen first came in against Michigan. Totally lost his man for an easy layup.

Carsen CAN play defense better than anybody on the team with his athleticism. Unfortunately he doesn't. Don't blame him one bit. He's young, probably never been asked to play our kind of defense. It's easy to see when he goes for steals rather than play position defense, that's what he's always done.

For all his lack of athleticism, Cline does what Painter asks him to do. His defense has come a long way since last year. When he gets beat it's not because he isn't giving the effort or being in the right position. It's usually because he just can't keep up with the better athlete.

I think part of the change was too establish the defense early and not dig a hole if Carsen takes some bad shots. I also think it's more effective to bring a guy like Carsen off the bench. Harder for the defense to adjust to a quicker, more explosive Carsen when they started out seeing a slower shooter like Cline.

Cline has done a good job off the ball and that is Carsens weakness. Glad you didn't hear me when Carsen lost his man. :)

Ha
Oh lord, me too. Dog ran into the other room.
Ha, that is funny/relevant. One of mine goes into the closet and hides every game ... another one goes and hides under my desk in the office ... my kids just sigh and leave the house .... oh well, passion is a lost art

Overall production combined from the both of them is worse. That is my point. I like Cline and I think he is very important to the teams success as is CE. CE has hot and cold games, he's had 2 hot games both against the same team since coming off the bench and 2 somewhat cold games. Cline has yet to have a good game starting but had plenty of good games off the bench. We do have quite a few more games to base things off of with CE starting but as of now the swap has lead to less from the both of them overall whether they are playing the same minutes or not.

Who is better playing alongside Haas? I like Cline better with Haas for kickouts and keeping space. I also think we can run against this team and think Carson would get after it from the get go with Biggie and Vince.

Both will and need to get their minutes. I prefer Carson in the starting lineup because it gives us the best chance to set the tone in my opinion. Cline can come in and drill some threes from Haas kickoffs and game over.

That is sound and I'm sure "one" of the thoughts the coaches debated.
