Carsen Edwards

He wasn't MIA. He just had the toughest matchup (Miles Bridges), guarding a projected NBA lottery pick.
I think Nag has a point but I am concerned that this happens to Vince every time he is matched on a better athlete

As the pressure heats up on D against Purdue and the need to defend the three and drive that ball being in bonus....CE was teh right answer. Matt just told him you shoot the ball early in the clock and you have 100 stairs to give me time to decide the appropriate significant emotional event as punishment for this brain dead moment. Carsen did what needed done... :)
I think you have nailed coach's approach. Give him a longer leash early then pull it tighter later in the game. Good training.

His defense is much better than a typical freshman. I don't know that he is the best defender. He is in the top two on ball perimeter defender and somewhere in the top off ball defender. Still, I lean towards Dakota overall...not as good on the ball as Carsen, but better off the ball...and Carsen is a freshman and we can't forget that!
I can't get on board yet with Carsen's defense. I agree he's doing fine for a freshman, especially considering how much Painter emphasizes man to man.......lots for him to learn.
His athleticism allows him to make up for mistakes. No one should go by him but it happens. Off ball he gets a little lost at times. Looks like he is just not dialed in every possession.........but I don't think that's abnormal for a young player. He can be a stopper when he really commits to defending the best he can every possession. Also our best chance for steals on a team that doesn't get many.
Dakota is the best we have and I don't think it's even close. He was running through wall after wall against Harris last night.

I agree on Dakota Mathias. DM did a really nice job last night with Harris, even with EH making a couple of hand-in-your-face, tip-your-cap shots. IIRC, at Iowa, he picked up his third early in the second half....plenty of things went wrong in the second half there, but that didn't help.

Swanigan and the Edwards boys can make things go and are big barometers for the offense, but to me, DM is the "glue" guy (as many others have discussed)......and he'll do the dirty work on D that needs to be done.

Nice with the SD reference. Showing your age:)

Good point with the Iowa game. Not saying we would have won because of it...........Jok was doing OK with Dakota on him, but that third on Dakota really changed what we could do defensively early in the second half. Like MSU, Iowa was running Jok off two and sometimes three screens. Dakota spends a ton of energy on defense trying keep up.

That's just not true. While he didn't shoot well (2-8), he got fouled a lot and hit all his free throws (6/6) and had 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Your comment about Carsen is true, if Carsen is on, Purdue always wins (so far).
Not sure where the 2-8 stat came from. He hit two 3's and had a least 2 driving layup so.

I am ok with that...my issue is that he should be so much better than he is at the defensive end (which, in his own case, would not be hard to do)...and, he is too good to not be able to create some offense at the other end as well.

He was huge last week in both games...but he needs to be huge in every game...especially if he is not going to do anything on the defensive end. He is an underrated rebounder...and he did indeed hit his free throws, which was big...but I also disagree that he passed well, as he has struggled ever since he got to Purdue in that regard, and by now, that issue should have been resolved as well it would seem.

Ultimately, the guy is key to what happens with this team...he is far more capable than what he showed tonight and in several other games...when he plays as he is capable, Purdue is a really good team...hopefully he can become more consistent and do that for them (and for him for that matter).
I want to see this, too. He's one of my favorite players and he has the talent to be special. He wants to be in the NBA. Going up against another future NBA player, he has to shine. Rise to the challenge.

I think that Carsen, although not perfect, is doing enough in Painter's eyes to keep him out there. If he was not doing ok and improving, Painter's track record would suggest that as a Freshman his min. would be limited. You just don't play for Matt if you cannot D up.

I can handle the 3 quick threes he forced as long as he continues to not turn the ball over. When he takes bad shots and turns the ball over, that is when he becomes a liability. Definitely agree that he is/ is going to be a very special player.

We are awesome on the block, we have good three point shooters, but the biggest weakness in our offense is penetration into the lane and getting to the bucket. Carsen can fill that void, and I think Painter needs to try to use him for that even more often - and I think he has been lately. Those layups are demoralizing to the opponent. I think Carsen is figuring that out and trying to turn the corner on those screens and go all way to the hoop more often, and less floating around and jacking threes.

Is that just a guess based on when he slipped near the sidelines last night or do you have a credible source for that information?

The back injury was mentioned in the game recap posted on this site by Brian:

"Vincent Edwards endured a rough night, finishing 2-of-8 from the floor and seeing his defensive assignment, Miles Bridges, net 33, but he's been plagued by a back injury of late and still chipped in 10 points, with some clutch foul shooting to close the game out."

Info is okay but those articles are for the paid members.

I think the bigger issue right now for him is at the defensive end...and I also think that he has the ability/skills/athleticism to be good at that end...but, right now, he gambles too much unfortunately, but more importantly, he fails to provide backside help in the post and it has led to multiple easy baskets (and did at least twice tonight). He is still learning no doubt...especially the system...but, he is too good/strong/fast to not be a better than average individual defender.
um have you ever seen IU play, bunch of good smart atheltes that still can't figure out how to play defense. It's bizarre - like a perfectly round, well-greased wheel that just won't roll
