Carsen Declares

Very smart move on his part. I fully expect the same thing after next season with him and probably Eastern as well.

Why do you hope he stays in draft?

For the record out of curiosity I looked at some mock drafts and he isn’t listed on any 2019 mock drafts.

I also get he feeling Matt encourages this declaring to test the waters.

Why? I hope he stays in the draft because it’s a life long dream for any kid who plays college basketball to make the NBA. All it takes is one team to really like you.

I believe this is a good thing as players receive constructive criticism on their game, and they bring that insight back to Purdue. look at how Swanigan elevated his game after he came back from attending the NBA combine.

That ‘one team’ thing is a pipe dream. If your really want to see Carsen do well hope that he receives feedback that puts him as a consensus lottery pick. The worst that could happen is he stays in and doesn’t get selected early. If you think Biggie hasn’t felt conflicted the past six months you’re mistaken.

Yeah, they say the same things Matt says and now they know Matt is telling them the truth. It reinforces the college coaches generally

I'm still guessing he goes. He's athletic, he's quick, he can shoot both three's and free throws, and he plays pretty damned good defense for being undersized most of the time. Honestly.....what is he going to improve if he comes back next year?

The team loses 4 starting seniors. How much improvement, I'm not totally sure but his numbers could blow up next year. Then again he may see that we will not be very good next year and go ahead and make the move this year if he thinks he might get drafted in the 1st round.

Not sure of the criteria that defines blowing up, but in my limited understanding (Not an NBA fan) I think he needs to show he can create for others as well as opposed to almost always focused on scoring which he does very well. He can show that next year...IF that is important

TJ I think he showed that when he played PG on the USA U-19 team. It's kinda hard when you play shooting guard with the motion offence. Though I know he likes to dish the ball when driving to the basket. I've seen him do it.

Isiah Thomas and Drew Bledsoe - both under 6'. both doing well in the NBA. They also said drew Brees was too short to have any success in the NFL.

Good gravy! I hope to see him in gold and black at least one more year! He has plenty of time for a prosperous and long NBA career a little later. No need to rush things. I truly believe if he stays at least one more year and can continue on his trajectory of development that he has shown so far, his draft stock will improve tremendously next year!

I'm aware of the U-19 team but not sure that is really in a "TEAM" setting. Late in the year it appeared to me that most of his game was the three OR getting to the basket. He can pass, but Purdue needed him to do what he has always done and that is score. I figured the NBA would like to see if he can change in a split second what his initial desire was. I and I think others could get a feel he was about to let it go as he was going up the court...and when he drove it was to score and so I wonder if he can react instantly and make a play different than the initial thought? I say that, but I admit I'm ignorant of the NBA and so I could be completely wrong.

It shouldn't. He isn't on any mock drafts so he would be taking a gigantic gamble to leave now. Next year assuming he plays the same or better, then I can see him jumping.
Mock drafts aren't made by NBA people. They are made by random sites where people like you and I guess where players will get drafted. If he has a good combine, he could very easily get into the late 1st/early 2nd round and leave. Mock drafts typically look very different pre and post combine.

Now someone knows what they talking about it’s not all what you do in college that would impress NBA GMs how can you impress NBA GMs once you are on their court in front of them can change many minds. Can the player game translate to the NBA is what they wanna no. A lot of college players no matter what school whether blue bloods or not game don’t translate to the NBA why if you have watched any NBA games quite a few rookies or 1st rounders most have struggled or only playing in G league and why a lot of the older players 2 to 4 year college guys are actually playing well frank mason , brooks , thredwell etc all 2nd round picks are doing well. Bottom line the mock draft people only talk about the players they got to see play all season but there are plenty players who game translates to the nba that didn’t play much that they didn’t see but nba scouts and GMs knows about those are the players once in front of those GMs can change drastically there future. Carsen is similar to me at Sexton to me scoring guard with bull dog mentality if he is a sure fire lottery pick than carsen has game why he can’t. Wish him good luck he’s a dynamic player.

If he’s a first round lock, that’s a guaranteed multimillion dollar contract- you gotta go.

hopefully he wont make the same mistake blackmon did. biggie got his money but is sitting deep on the bench yet yogi is playing. just shows what a crap shoot the nba is. if carsen isnt a first rounder, which i dont think he is, then i hope he comes back and improves in the areas needed to be a first rounder.

This is so true. I remember thinking Brad Miller far exceeded what I thought he'd do in the NBA. He ended up making a lot of money. It's all about perceptions when you're evaluating prospects. I do think if he really thought he was going to go, he'd have hired an agent though. He's obviously not confident enough to burn that bridge back to West Lafayette.

Any where in the 1st round and he needs to go. Years ago I would say, "Stay in school and get the degree", but what these guys are making based on POTENTIAL: is nuts and I'd tell them to go get their's. They can buy a college.

Blackmon had burned his bridges at IU. He had to go, and having watched him several times at Marion, IMO he's never been pro material.

So many hidden gems that scouts got to see this season that didn’t get many min but has NBA potential that translate to the league. I no a few come to mind

A real element of James Blackmon Jr. leaving was that he got his degree in three (stayed in IU for all three relevant summers to go with three school years).

Bad knees + college degree + limited shelf life for an oft-injured player = leaving.

I read and heard it was a fairly tough decision because Archie came and Crean left; if Crean had stayed he would have been 100% gone for sure.

I live up here, do business with a lot of those Marion businessmen who are the major boosters, and was told Blackmon was gone two years before but mama made him stay. He wanted to go to UK, but again, mama told him he was going to IU.

I won't say he hated Crean, because hate's a strong word, but he was going to be gone as soon as he could get out of town. NBA or not.

JB's biggest problem...and Dakich said it best...is that he couldn't guard a chair if the chair was nailed to the floor. Keep an eye on the youngest one coming up....best of the brothers.

Carsen was practically the best player on the FIBA U19 team this past summer so who knows what will happen. I do think one more year and he could be a top 15 pick in the first round if all goes well. If goes pro this year and he gets drafted in the 1st round then who could blame him for leaving. If his goal is to make it to the pro's then I think he will at least be in the top 60 and get drafted, but if his goal is to be the best player he can be, I think another year at Purdue would serve him well and would help springboard his NBA career.

One more year and he could be Isaac Haas sitting with a broken bone.
