Can we beat Indiana State?

I generally agree with you, but in all fairness our inability to close out a game in the 4th quarter has been a trait of this program long before Hazell.
you're right, I mentioned this the other day, it falls under the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm not really high on the Boilers right now. But I think we'll give the Sycamores a pretty good pounding Saturday. They've gotta be hungry given they are on a 7-game losing streak at the moment. Anxious to see what happens after that - BGSU should be pretty solid and VT is a lot more beatable than they were a few days ago.

BGSU IS NOT as good as Marshall. Their run game will not be what Marshall's was, meaning we can most likely play an extra DB and hopefully play tighter coverage to shut them down.

With Marshall, we had to line up AT LEAST 7 in the box to stop Johnson. I see BGSU as a 10-17 point win and I think we lead ISU 24-7 at half and cruise from there.

VT will be tough but with their QB going down and our strength being stopping the run I feel that we now actually have a chance in this game. Will be a low scoring game, but Purdue has to get some TEs involved, use the middle of the field and be smarter about play calls!

I think BG spreads us out and throws over the middle a lot and that will keep them in the game, that 1st and 20 throw against us this past sunday in the 4th was killer.

Purdue will beat Indiana State. The question is will they let Appleby play the entire game to get more experience or will they let Blough come in in the 4th to get some action?

I'm glad you at least realize that Blough is the back-up. All these people calling for Sindelar - he's 3rd string.

I think PU will beat ISU, but people have to be more rational and think that Va Tech is a game that is a toss-up. That team stuck the only loss on OSU last year in the Horseshoe, and Beamer is 50X better coach than Hazell.
Yes and no, Beamer historically is a better coach, BUT that team has fallen the last 3 years to barely being a bowl team in the ACC, which the B1G is stronger. Beamer has lost his edge, and now is dealing with a QB that wasn't the starter for OSU. I saw them rise up a little against OSU but they just do not have the offense to win a high scoring game against a similar team. Your line play will win you this game and establish the run more. AA needs to be held in check by the coaches, long pass plays are not his strength, he will do well with intermediate stuff and improvising. I can see this playing out to something along the lines of 28-24 in your favor. Your DLine did a good job against our horse in D. Johnson, so if they can do that again against their FB this game could be even more in your favor. This is your measuring stick.

The most level headed response I have seen and agree completely. I feel you will be 3-1 starting B1G play, homefield advantage until then cant do anything but help. Get an upset and wins against Ill and Indiana and its bowl time. Question is would the faithful still call for the coaches head if he wins 6-7 games? Would be a mistake in my opinion.

They may resort to that, but for the most part your db's did a good job against Marshall's recievers, who is considered very good and deep. BG is not going to win many 20 yard gains, they simply do not have the athletes you faced last Sunday much less a rb like you faced. If you force them to throw and abandon the run, game is in the bag.

I dunno. I was too lazy to check the second half, but against Tennessee in the first half they had pass plays of 45, 20, 38, 31, and 29 yards.

True, but honestly I don't think UT has the corners you have, and it being the first game of the season I am willing to bet they didn't prepare for the pass plays they saw. One thing to take note of is their lack of rushing against UT.

I honestly think Purdue could beat UT at this point. D that hasn't lived up to its billing in any of Jones' first 3 years and an offense that is too 1 dimensional that has fallen in love with a QB that honestly doesn't bring much to the table.

Purdue is a VASTLY improved team, we just need to clean up the small stuff.

Yes, Marshall is a G5 team, but last year they were pretty much the best G5 team and their depth says that not much will likely change there.

If by "UT" you mean Texas I agree.

If you mean Tennessee, I think we could beat them. But, we'd have to play them 10 times to do it.

I agree, this is a much more seasoned and talented team for Purdue than the last few years. I have never been impressed with UT under Jones, and really since Fulmer left. What I saw was a very solid team and aggressive Sunday. That will win ballgames.

Interesting point of view for G5 teams. What some doesn't understand is within G5, there are exceptions that go against what a typical G5 school does in terms of the program, of course a lot of it starts with coaching but the rest is the typical difference between G5 and P5 schools. Typically a G5 is not as deep, deeper than an FCS school but not as deep as a P5. Exceptions to this over the last little bit would be schools like ECU, BSU, Marshall, Cincy and the like. Those schools can match with depth and not have a major talent drop from 1-2 deep and some even 3 deep, which is one reason why those schools can stand toe to toe with probably half the P5 schools out there and win their fair share. That comes from recruiting, I don't put much into recruiting services ranking and stars etc, but more into who else has offered the kid. One thing I noticed over the last several years of Doc trying to build this program with depth (and that took a little while even as good as a recruiter he is, due to the talent not being anywhere close to what it should have been when he got here) is a good portion of the kids he brings in he competes with P5 for them and wins a lot of recruiting battles, and yes Purdue was and is one of those schools he competes against and then there are some that are very talented and just ballers but lack some attributes, like size, so they get attention but some are hesitant to offer due to size. A good example of this is Tiquan Lang, he had a few offers and was actually committed to south Alabama for a while, but Doc saw his video and loved how he played the game. I would say a good 10-25% of our classes contain diamonds in the rough/overlooked kids like this and Doc's ability to spot it has been flawless to date. He doesn't care about star ratings even though at the end of the day we end up ranking as one of the best G5 classes since he has been here and right in the middle of the P5 rankings.

I will be rooting for you guys the rest of the way, I saw plenty to like.

Tennessee is not as good as their fan base, their QB and media would lead you to believe.
