Can Sindelar redshirt?

I prefer Sindelar to Blough, but Blough has really stepped up and is playing great and it looks like Sindelar is still hurting from his injury. Sindelar has not played the last 2 games and if I remmeber the rules correctly he could have played in the first 2 games and still get a medical redshirt. That would give us 2 full seasons in the future that Sindelar could be the starter.

He already has. 2015.

He could but he is also QB2

Op said redshirt. I said no. You offered up a false rebuttal.

Bottom line: he doesn’t qualify for either
The OP was clearly assuming injury and talking about medical waiver. If he had a season ending injury, he absolutely may qualify. This ends our discussion because I don’t deal with assholes

No he wouldn’t qualify. You need to miss two seasons for injury. Not one.

I am curious what the injury is and if it’s related to his previous knee injury. It would be nice to hear some sort of update.
It wasn't a lower body issue. I believe it was a throwing shoulder/elbow issue given when warming up for the Missouri game, he didn't throw much past 10 yards and that was during snaps with the centers. He was available if needed last week against BC had Blough been hurt for an extended time but no reason to push him in to getting back if Blough is playing at the level he currently is.

Thanks. Brohm’s quote today announcing Blough as the starter didn’t seem like he emphatically stated Sindelar is ready to play. But I may just be reading into things.

Trying not to throw David under the bus but also allowing Sindelar not to get frustrated by not playing. We'll likely see Sindelar at some point in the season with meaningful snaps if Blough struggles. If Brohm has a capable backup waiting in the wings, he isn't shy about giving another guy a shot.

Think there might be something to that. No need to rush Eli back to full health status only to tell everyone he is benched.

I think Brohm has learned that these guys' heads are in a better place when the starting issue is settled early in the week and the less focus on the QB depth chart the better.

It was a ribcage injury. Thats why he couldnt throw

Thought the question was medical redshirt.

You only get 1 redshirt year. Once you don't play for a year, that's it.

Like NAT said, there's a medical hardship waiver but those don't come easy. The burden is VERY high. Sindelar does not yet meet it. If he were hurt next year and didn't play...he could POSSIBLY qualify. That said, we need him to play and play well next year.

You have to miss TWO years due to circumstances beyond your control. Redshirting because you are not physically ready does not qualify. Realistically, you would need to qualify for a medical redshirt twice to justify a hardship waiver. Sindelar redshirted as a freshman due to the logjam we had at the position, so that doesnt cut it. He also practiced that year, so you arent going to prove a medical need.

Also, for this year, Brohm said he was ready to go on Saturday, but it wasnt necessary.

I don't disagree with your interpretation of the medical redshirt waiver criteria. However, what if Purdue were to pursue a medical redshirt based on the ACL surgery performed on ES in late Dec 2014 prior to his enrollment in Jan 2015. NCAA states athlete must suffer injury "during 1 of 4 seasons of college OR during HS senior yr". Not likely he would have been medically cleared to play that year anyway if he even wanted to.

Consider if Sindelar has tweaked knee again and is unable to play anymore this year. Perhaps an aggravated persistant ribcage muscle pull prevents utilization for remainder of 2018 campaign.

Could'nt an imaginative Compliance & Training staff make a presentation to the NCAA to grant an extra year of eligibility?

He practiced that year his freshman year. Hard to make a case he was out due to reasons beyond his control

They could try to make a case, but it would be a lot better if he tore it late in his senior year of HS and had to sit out his freshman year of college FB doing rehab.

Just re-read the NCAA medical redshirt rules and at least on two sites there is no mention of a two year occurrence, just a season ending injury before participating in 30% of the season! Just saying what two sites have posted.

Jack, there may not be a mention of a 2 year occurrence, but there is a limit on eligibility.

Once the clock starts you have 5 years to play 4.

That translates to only one redshirt year.

True but there have been numerous waivers of that recently. I think the NCAA has been bending more rules on transfers, medical hardships and injuries recently after getting some bad press on some specific cases!

He doesnt have a good case for that. They are granting waivers if someone wants to transfer without redshirting. They are pretty steadfast on their requirements for hardship waivers. He doesnt have a case at the moment. Especially considering Brohm said he was available to play last weekend.
