One year ago today, Caleb Swanigan passed away in Fort Wayne of natural causes at the age of 25.
It was a tragedy then and a tragedy today, but in those 25 years, Swanigan triumphed against obesity, homelessness, childhood trauma, and a life that was harder than anyone deserved. As Purdue fans, we got to watch a lot of those triumphs happen. I think it's important for us to remember that, celebrate it, and keep telling the story of Caleb Swanigan.
On a personal note, Caleb Swanigan was the first athlete that I covered to die. It shook me to my core to think that a couple years ago he could be an NBA athlete and then die of 'natural causes.'
Today marks one year without a drink for me. Swanigan's death was an uncomfortable look at the things that can take ahold of your life without you admitting there was a problem.
I hope his struggles will motivate anyone struggling to seek friendship, to seek help, and I've linked to a mental health organization at the bottom of the article where you can donate to help the fight against Mental Heatlh that we will be donating to in memory of Biggie.
