if we go for a new coach, I think this guy would be a viable candidate. Successful coach at BYU and Virginia w/ a 135 - 81 record at those 2 schools. He currently coaches at New Mexico and is 3- 6 in his 1st season there. He's 59 yrs old and signed a 6 million $ contract for 5 yr. So he's an experienced coach w/ a good record and one that would see Purdue as an upgrade from their current position . Is he my favorite? maybe not but I think he's a coach that we probably could get at this point and would be a very good upgrade.

Reilly Diefenbach. Most folks have never seen this dude, but he is definitely a "By the book" kinda guy. Definitely a performer that knows the numbers and goes straight to the source when they're not adding up. Pleasant to work with, but with a definite hard side for the underperformers and relentless in his pursuit of results; not afraid to "kick it upstairs" when he's not getting them. I think he can be lured away from the Detroit area with minimal effort. Get him here and let him start making the calls.

Honestly I think Bobo needs to just go to the trustees and tell them the only pathway to success is overpaying and with big ten revenue we need to pay stupid money to hire a head coach with a home run hire. Maybe someone from Big 12 or ACC.

We already overpaid for Walters. You think the trustees want to overpay for another bad coach? Purdue is going to have to pay the buyout and more NIL. Where is the money going to come from to overpay to bring in a new head coach? Are we going to raise tuition or Indiana state taxes just so Purdue can hire a new coach? How about we do 50/50 raffles too?

I think it’s obvious. Purdue doesn’t have the money to buy out Walters and hire a real football coach.

So how much money is bang going to contribute to hire a new coach? How about chi chi? Put your money where your mouth and desires are! If you want a new coach so bad, you pay his salary !!!

I prefer spending my money on academics and cancer research and hurricane relief efforts. There are more important things in life than wasting millions on a football coach!

He checks several boxes....
Purdue's probably not going to be in a position to attract an obvious homerun hire, especially if this goes into 2025.

IMO: look for experienced head coaches who have worked in programs comparable to Purdue and have shown they can work the portal effectively.

In conference games He was 62-67 at Virginia including 8-9 his last two years before he retired for a few years. He has fragmented staff he cobbled together after being out of coaching. He’s coached 8 games since 2021. Something just doesn’t sit right with him when he just abruptly had to take a break from coaching. That’s a major red flag on any resume let alone P5 head coach.

This is a Purdue football board, not an academic, cancer research, or hurricane relief effort board.

You are nuts. Purdue is getting $12.9m more next year in tv revenue and that will climb significantly to where it goes from current $60m+/- to $80m-$100m. It’s not a buyout they just pay him out over time so it’s $3m a year for 3 more years IIRC. Simple math…
$12.9m
+ $4.1m they would pay to walters
- $3m owed per year under contract
$14m additional funds available. They can give it all to the coaches, or most and add some to nil. They will not raise tuition for athletics (it’s been the opposite they have used athletic TV money for academic investments) and certainly won’t be taking taxpayers money that’s just nonsense and you know it. Purdue is the only school in the big ten who historically is self funded, does not take any money from tuition or student fees, and doesn’t ask the school to discount tuition for out of state like Illinois did when they claimed to be the second big ten self funded athletic department.

Also the median coaches salary in the big ten this year is around $7m and that will likely continue to rise so $8m for poaching a big 12 or acc seasoned coach is not ludicrous.

Athletic also reportedly made $4m in 2023 and I’m guessing 2024 was even more profitable with our success in basketball.

Remind me, did your son play D1 sports? I can't remember...

can't disregard his great record at BYU, looking at his Virginia record of 6 yrs which was 36 - 38, he was hired in 2015 to a team that had 4 straight losing seasons and didn't win a bowl game since 05. His first season went 2 - 10 but 3 yrs later had a 9 win season and ACC championship, that 's progress at least. We will not get a big name guy, so out of experienced "mid grade" guys like Mendenhall, Chryst , and Fitzgerald. I think Bronco could work out

For me, Mendenhall would be an underwhelming hire, but still would be a massive improvement over the clown show we currently have in place…

no matter who we would get. it's going to be a slow climb out of a big hole, personally I think Dickert would be the guy if he would come to Purdue
