breaking news

If it is Fleck he needs to get to work ASAP. Last MAC coach who screwed around till January to coach in a bowl game didn't work out too well. In that case we had a few D1 players already on the roster now we have literally no talent.

Lierally the only thing Fleck and Hazell have in common are the conference they came from. They aren't the same coach they don't have the same fire.

Hazell spending extra time with Kent State isn't what doomed his tenure here. That thought is lazy and ignorant.

It was indicative of the fact he underestimated how hard he was going to have to work to compete. He thought sniffing the air at OSU and gimmicks like his hat, vest and notebook would get it done. I don't have anything against Fleck but rowing the boat is going to be a lot harder in the Big and I would like to see him get right to work but I am not as smart as all the wise ones here.

I have no sources, but all the media said was he wouldn't talk until their season is over....next week conference champ game...bowl game included?

Herman said before Houstons game yesterday he had not talked to anyone yet and all the rumors were false! An hour after the game he was leaving for texas!
Must have had Austin Texas on the headset while coaching!

Learn legalese....his agent was doing all the contact. In the case of PJ, there has been a denial that his agent has even been contact with Purdue, then again the agent could have been in contact with search agency.

he's familiar with them.

I'd say it hurt us when it came to assistant coaching. I'm not worried about recruiting this year I want focus being getting competent assistants.

Don't mention the word "fire" around Hazzell.

Still have to have the personnel regardless of the coach. You cannot build a program on a roster chock-full of Rivals 2 stars.

Fair enough. Indiana's record for most of the past two decades reflects as much. But, a couple thoughts:

1) Purdue's recruiting took a huge nose dive under Haze. IMO, it's not that big of a stretch to think the right coach can address that problem reasonably quickly.

2) Minnesota's success in recent years suggests you don't have to have a bunch of super stars to compete in the B1G West. Credible talent (mid-50s recruiting classes) that is well-coached, well-developed and minimizes mistakes can yield solid 7-8 win seasons. And that would be a huge step up for Purdue.

Hazell being Hazell is what doomed it.

For a decade now, 95% of the sentiment on this board has been that 7-8 win seasons are for losers, who have "accepted mediocrity." But, of course, the downside of the Kuckleheads' swing-for-the-fences" mantra is "going down in flames," which is exactly what we've done. And it's exactly what we can't afford to have happen again, with another coach. This is why I prefer Spack. I admit he doesn't appear to have the upside potential of a Miles, Fleck, or even Brohm, but he's the one guy who I'm confident will get us back to respectability. And he doesn't have the downside risk of some of these other guys. How can anyone look at Fleck or Brohm and be sure they aren't Hazell redux, or that Miles isn't Akers redux. The only advantage I see to Miles or Fleck is that they may be better snake oil salesmen as recruiters, but that won't last if they don't win within a couple years.

I'm afraid Spack might be Spack redux.

I'm not saying that 7-8 wins is the ultimate goal. Sure I'd like to see Purdue play in New Years Day bowls again.

But we have to get back to competent respectability first. I think the right coach can accomplish that in 2-3 years.

It starts with better recruiting, conditioning, and execution.
