Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.
So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much. We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.
Apologies again for the delay today, but just wanted to get as much in this as we could.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
Big visit weekend for Purdue again ...
Among some underclassman visitors ...
Among commitments: QB Ryan Browne, Carmel's Winston Berglund and Will Heldt, receivers T.J. McWilliams and Ryne Shackelford, DT Drake Carlson and linebacker Owen Davis. (BN)
PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING
Purdue had a 2025 visitor in this week as Crispus Attucks' Dezmon Briscoe visited for a practice. He'll be back next weekend for the Fan Day scrimmage, along with Lawrence North guard Azavier Robinson, probably among others.
We expect offered 2025 forward EJ Walker to be back next weekend, too.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
While Purdue added QB Ryan Browne last Friday for the Class of 2023, it still may be in the market for a signal-caller via the portal.
As it stands, the 2023 quarterback derby will pit redshirt junior Michael Alaimo and redshirt freshman Brady Allen. But, it is believed that if Purdue can land an upper-level quarterback who was a quality starter at another school, it may try to land him. But, otherwise, Purdue isn't likely to add a portal quarterback who can't project as a likely starter. (TD)
PURDUE BASKETBALL
• Brandon Newman did return to practice Tuesday night after sitting out a few practices with a sore back.
• Neglected to include this in our report from media day the other day, but Matt Painter on Braden Smith ...
"He's a really good player. He can pass the basketball, he knows what's going on. He's competitive and he has very, very good instincts at both ends of the court. He's more of a point guard than, like, Payton Pritchard, but along those lines in terms of the quality of player. I know that's a big statement but we had Payton Pritchard with USA Basketball and he was with Carsen Edwards with the Celtics so I've had a chance to watch him a lot and I'm a big fan of his, so I know what the statement means."
• Painter said he'll talk to juniors Zach Edey, Mason Gillis, Brandon Newman and Ethan Morton about the possibility of using their COVID years at the back end of their careers after this season. It is a relevant issue already because of 2024 recruiting.
He said his stance on the COVID year Is that anyone who wants to use the extra year Is welcome to do so.
"But you have to weight in where they are, what they want," Painter said. "Do you have your degree? Mason already has his, Brandon gets his in December."
When we asked Gillis about the possibility a few weeks back, he did not dismiss it out of hand, but said he'd talk to Painter after the season. Morton has always said he'd given Purdue an answer whenever it needs one. Newman said he hadn't thought about it yet. We are not even going to bother asking Edey, haha, though the possibility of Purdue getting a fourth year out of him might be crystalizing during the NIL Era and given his less-than-opportune timing as an NBA prospect. PURDUE FOOTBALL
A few PFF notes on Nebraska ...
• The Cornhuskers' pass-blocking grade suggests a real vulnerability there, shall we say, graded out nationally at No. 123, ahead of only Cal, Southern Miss, Georgia Tech and Navy.
Nebraska has allowed 81 pressures this season and its offensive line does not grade great. Tackle Hunter Anthony's, guard Turner Corcoran's and interior lineman Ethan Piper's pass-pro grades are bad, while guard Henry Lutovsky's is single-digit bad.
• Their best grade comes in the run game, where they're No. 30 nationally.
• QB Casey Thompson's pressure splits are distinct.
Kept Clean: 88-124, 1,163 yards, 9 TD, 4 INT (elite grade)
Pressure: 30-59, 334, 2 INT (mediocre grade)
No Blitz: 87-133, 1,176, 8 TD, 3 INT (elite grade)
Blitzed: 31-50, 321, TD, 3 INT (mediocre grade)
• Thompson throws deep well, 16-31, 523 yards, six TDs and two picks on balls thrown more than 20 yards. He's 8-11 for 256 yards and four touchdowns throwing deep over the middle. Nebraska would seem like it's really going to attack Purdue in the passing game between the hashes based on their results thus far.
• Nebraska averages 2.9 yards after contact in the run game.
