Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.

So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much. We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.

PURDUE FOOTBALL

Just spoke at length with A.D. Mike Bobinski and will have some stories as time allows, but a couple quick notes.

• He's targeting the April Trustees meeting for a proposal for a $30-million Phase 1 for Ross-Ade Stadium.

Three elements are at the forefront.

- The tunnel from the locker room to the stadium, a project that could also eventually involve some additional space under the stands for a recruiting area or some other additional function.

Bobinski says that this part of the project wouldn't be as expensive as you might think, either.

- A dining/nutrition area, which would involve the space where the team store is now at the north end of the stadium.

- Maybe South end zone seating, though it's being weighed right now whether that can be In the budget for Phase 1.

• Talks are underway for an extension of football coach Jeff Brohm's deal, though you're not going to see one of these gaudy decade-long contracts with obnoxious numbers.

"It is important for us to show that we're committed to Jeff and we believe in him and extension for a reasonable amount of time makes sense all the way around. Our president and our board have given us the go-ahead to try to make this happen."

As for a time frame ...

"The good news is there's no desperation or an urgency," Bobinski said. "There's a rational conversation to be had. We'll land in a good place.

"I'd love to be able to get that to the April Board meeting, too, if we can pull that off."

• On the NIL front, Purdue is establishing an exchange through one of its third-party partners as a sort of off-site meeting room for Its student-athletes and Interested business partners. It's also begun the process of coordinating the creation of a "collective," meaning a group of interested supporters/boosters/stakeholders who'd be able to create opportunities.

All of this is legal under the hazy guidance that's been provided by the NCAA to this point, but schools can not participate in setting up specific opportunities for its athletes.

More to come on all this ... (BN)

PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Couple things here real quick ...

• Regarding Mike Alaimo's transfer, that does really thin Purdue's QB mix out — it's now just seniors Aidan O'Connell and Austin Burton and true freshman Brady Allen — and makes the commitment of Rickie Collins that much more relevant if Purdue can keep him. If you don't think people are going to keep recruiting him, you don't pay attention to recruiting.

Conceivable now that maybe this winter Purdue looks for a transfer to at least add another body to the mix for 2023, but the big-picture point here is that Purdue was going to fast-track Allen anyway, we think, and now this sets up as his job for the taking in 2023. It probably would have been anyway with or without Alaimo but now the decks are almost completely clear.

This could be a year where those three games' worth of playing time could really matter, because Purdue might be wise to get Allen on the field some when it can and still preserve his redshirt. We're assuming Austin Burton would still be No. 2 on the depth chart, but Allen may have a chance to push for that even for all we know.

• Purdue target Winston Berglund has been on the fast track to a Boilermaker commitment but that may be changing now that he has a lot more to consider all of a sudden.

According to Michigan people, Berglund's film was sent by a mutual friend to Jim Harbaugh, who Immediately called to personally offer the Carmel DB/linebacker for Michigan. Indiana, Vanderbilt and others have joined in as well. Purdue's still going to be a real player here. The kid's mind has basically been made up, but he now may have reason to take a bunch more visits in addition to just that trip to Wake Forest. The waters have gotten muddied some, but we'd still expect to have a real shot here.

He and Dillon Thieneman have been a couple of guys we've had on commitment watch during spring visits.

Thieneman was just offered by Northwestern, which is a significant offer for him.

• Purdue has long had an offer out to Ohio's Anthony Brown, who just de-committed from Minnesota, but now will have to re-establish its target framework with a new position coach. Brown's been to Purdue at least once and is supposed to come back this spring.

Anyway, here's a video interview Rivals.com just did with Brown.

PURDUE BASKETBALL

Just a quick FYI in case you are wondering.

There was a comment made during last weekend's bracket reveal show on CBS about the selection committee steering clear of letting teams play through cities they played three or more regular season games in.

Clarifying this: It's facility, not city. And postseason conference tournaments aren't taken into account there.

So there would be no obstacle to play opening NCAA Tournament play in Indianapolis. (BN)

PURDUE FOOTBALL

Purdue’s football staff is set, with four alterations having taken place: LB David Elson, TE/assistant o-line Ryan Wallace, WR Garrick McGee and CB Ashton Youboty. Also, Neil Callaway has been retained as a consultant after retiring from his assistant offensive line job.

But one item still hasn't been announced: Who will call the defense?

That was handled last year by co-DC/LB coach Brad Lambert, who left to be DC at Wake Forest.

Co-DC/secondary coach Ron English is expected to be the defensive play-caller. An announcement could come soon on who gets the responsibilities. English has called defenses at Michigan, Louisville and San Jose State in addition to being a head coach at Eastern Michigan. (TD)
