Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.
So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much. We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.
PURDUE BASKETBALL
Some very positive but not unexpected news for Purdue basketball: All of the Boilermakers' walking wounded from this summer have been cleared for full participation.
That means when Purdue holds its first fall workout, Caleb Furst, Braden Smith and Brian Waddell will all be full go after they were idled throughout the off-season recovering foot, foot and knee surgeries, respectively. Camden Heide (foot) returned to full participation some time ago.
This was always the goal, to just be cautious with the recoveries to make sure everyone was available for the fall.
• Asked both Brandon Newman and Ethan Morton the other day whether or not they've begun to think about the possibility of using their COVID years at the back end of their careers, an issue that is a long way off for them but coming to the forefront for Purdue In recruiting.
Both said they haven't but Morton has more than once now told us that he will give Purdue an answer when Matt Painter comes to him for one. The fact that Painter doesn't seem to have yet — this is absurd to be discussing for players whose careers are only at their midway point, but it is what it is — suggests that conversation will wait until spring. Painter did discuss it with last year's seniors right after their junior seasons.
Again, It would seem unlikely for Zach Edey to play a fifth year of college basketball, and who knows whether Newman or Mason Gillis would want to be In college for a sixth year, with their degrees in hand?
Morton would be the one, since his freshman season was a bit of a wash, and the thought of a retroactive redshirt year might make him whole in that regard. We'll see, though. (BN)
PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING
So at the moment, we don't think Purdue's really recruiting anyone for 2023 now that Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn was split and Xavier Booker committed elsewhere, with the portal in the spring being the likeliest recourse now.
We do want to mention, though, that Ohio guard Lawrent Rice, a player Purdue offered early and targeted prior to DGL's committed, remains uncommitted and seems to be slipping through the cracks some, for whatever reason. It's our understanding things have been kinda slow for him after Purdue, Ohio State, West Virginia and others offered him earlier on. That would seem like a bit of a red flag, but Rice Is more of a point guard than Gibbs-Lawhorn and Purdue needs ball-handlers right now, so maybe they at least take a look.
• Purdue's elite camp is next weekend. I'm still working on a list, but do know some of the headliners to be Kanon Catchings, commitment Jack Benter and 2025 target Malachi Moreno.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
Kendrick Gilbert remains uncommitted heading Into tomorrow night's season opener at Lafayette Jeff, as this continues to drag on. Seems like a toss-up between Purdue and Kentucky, with UK offering more money than Purdue could, and would.
If you've been following recruiting long enough, you know how sticky things can get when Kentucky assistant coach Vince Marrow gets involved. Ahem.
And that says nothing of NIL money, which a lot of schools continue to use as a recruiting inducement, which they're not supposed to, but you know how it goes. Purdue doesn't seem to be, at least overtly. We say "overtly" because when schools talk in recruiting about how much money a player can make in NIL at their school, the line between the two things can get pretty thin.
Stay tuned Friday night for coverage from Jeff. Cathedral also has Purdue wide receiver commit Jaron Tibbs and 2024 QB target Danny O'Neil. (BN)
