Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.
So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much.We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
Purdue continues to keep its eye on the portal for help on the offensive and defensive lines, the secondary and at running back.
The latest name to surface as a Purdue target was Virginia Tech defensive tackle DaShawn Crawford, who entered the portal in May. But the 6-foot, 270-pound Crawford committed to Southern Miss on Wednesday.
More portal scuttlebutt: Word is, Purdue has moved on from Buffalo DT Eddie Wilson. One-time target Jacob Gall—a guard from Buffalo—landed at Baylor. Washington State DT Lamonte McDougle is not a Purdue target, regardless of what you see on social media.
Purdue already has secured two D-linemen in the portal: tackle Damarjhe Lewis (Indiana) and end Joseph Anderson (South Carolina).
As for running back, Purdue is still in the running to land Clemson’s Chez Mellusi, but Wisconsin remains the favorite. Stay tuned. (TD)
PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING
A recap of a lot of what we told you last week here, but here's what we expect as of now on Purdue's official visit schedule for June.
June 10-12(Ish)
June 15-16(Ish)
June 18-20(ish)
Purdue does not yet have a date for Jalen Washington to officially visit in June, but he will.
Notable and significant here is the fact that these June official visits will count as junior-year visits, meaning all these players will still have a chance to make a second round of five visits as seniors. Very rarely do things play out that way, but it does mean that June won't be Purdue's only chance to get these guys on campus on its dime before the signing date.
A few side notes ...
• North Carolina has now offered Shaver and Trimble, as UNC is offering a good number of players right now. Where the Tar Heels will fit In for both those players remains to be seen, but Shaver may now make an official visit there right at the start of June, which would bump the possibility of him unofficially visiting Purdue right on June 1 after he plays at the Under Armour event in Westfield at the end of May.
Trimble is getting blown up with offers right now, with Michigan and Carolina among his new ones. Purdue's going to be In the picture on that one, it seems, but that won't be easy.
• Not much reason to think that prior commits Fletcher Loyer or Braden Smith will make official visits before the fall, but that doesn't mean they can't be around in June. Loyer has said he expects to be around Purdue some next month to play open gym and whatnot; Smith will as well, we're sure. Maybe they'd be around during some of these official visits for others.
• We have had some indications over the past few weeks and months that Purdue has been really strong with both Reed and Shaver both. It would surprise us if anything happened quickly on either front, but you never know.
Heide should still be considered the best bet for a summer commitment, but we don't know how much urgency he feels to get something done. (BN)
PURDUE FOOTBALL
• Kentucky cornerback Jamari Brown is on campus after committing to Purdue from the portal. And Australian punter Jack Ansell has made it to America. He’s believed to be in Los Angeles for a brief stopover and soon will matriculate to West Lafayette. (TD)
• Defensive tackle Steven Faucheux is the latest player to enter the portal. The move wasn’t a surprise. The only player Purdue has lost in the portal during Jeff Brohm’s tenure that was a surprise was receiver Maliq Carr.
On the subject of Purdue transfers: Don’t be surprised if a few more players enter the portal in the coming month or so. (TD)
• Purdue had an inside scouting report on incoming Samford kicker transfer Mitchell Fineran: Russ Callaway. He is the son of Purdue assistant offensive line coach Neil Callaway and was an assistant at Samford during Fineran's tenure.
Russ Callaway was hired as an offensive assistant with the New York Giants in April. He worked at LSU last year as a senior offensive analyst after leaving Samford following the 2019 season. (TD)
PURDUE BASKETBALL
Purdue's two graduate assistant coaches will be former Boilermaker guards Spike Albrecht and Tommy Luce. This is confirmed.
They will fill the voids on the staff left by P.J. Thompson and Grady Eifert, whose two-year terms as G.A.s expired.
Thompson will remain at Purdue full-time, though, in a newly created staff position, likely to be a 'player personnel' sort of title.
With those hires in place, Purdue's last order of business will be the sports performance/strength coach job vacated by Gavin Roberts, who left the program for Connecticut, seemingly in large part due to personal considerations. He's from out east originally. (BN)
