Boiler Upload Podcast Episode 28

Lance Jones....."quicker than advertised"

That gets me juiced, as hopefully that's what the team needs.

Our latest episode is now up with news on a couple of four star visitors, Myles Colvin going overseas, and the opening of basketball practice.

Tangential on your thoughts of a more physical D by Purdue is me wondering if Purdue switches less. We have witnessed Matt switching 1-4 a lot the last 5, 6 or 7 years? This is all predicated on the fear of the 3 ball and the drive to the basket. Teams in the past…even in the tourney, knowing Purdue switched so much would count on those switches to get the match-up they wanted and many times it was detrimental to Purdue. Even when Purdue doesn’t switch on off ball screens from the wing to the baseline, Purdue trails the offensive player while going over the top, for fear if he went under, that the player would stop and hit a 3 behind the screen. Instead, the offensive player may receive a pass and curl into the lane with Purdue trailing on a drive breaking down Purdue, drawing a foul or scoring. As a wrinkle, could Purdue “sometimes” double the ball if a pass is made to the guy coming off that screen (in that location described) with the Purdue player trailing …especially if the Purdue player trailing is not at a mismatch if the double goes astray and he must recover quickly?

Sometimes it just seems to me that it might be better to go between the ball and your offensive player than trailing all the time and effectively jamming slightly (can’t do it much anymore) the offensive players movement and timing ever so slight as well as fighting through screens more than the almost autopilot switch that has been somewhat common the last few years.

If Lance Jones is a defensive specialist, you don’t want to waste his talent allowing the other team to cause a switch and take him out of what he does best…
