There was a thread earlier about Blough's career stats, but I couldn't find it. Here's where he currently sits (after OSU game):

Passing Yards:
- 5th in school history for passing yards. He won't catch Brees or Painter, but he could catch Herrmann by the end of the season to be 3rd all time.
- Is on pace to be top 5 in single season passing yards. Only Brees/Painter occupy the top 5 spots.

Passing TDs:
- 5th in school history with 57 career passing TDs.
- He would need to average 2.3 TDs/game to catch Herrmann for 2nd all time.

Completions:

- 5th in school history with 719 career completions. Will likely end up 3rd all time.
- Will likely end up in the top 10 for completions in a season (currently on pace for 7th all time)

Completion Percentage:
- Blough currently sits at 9th all time in Completion %.
- Amazingly, he'd have the best single season completions % if the season ended right now. Blough is completing 66.5% of his passes this season. For comparison, Herrmann is the current single season leader at 65.8%.

Passing Yards:
- 7th in school history for passing yards. Will likely end up 5th, behind Brees, Painter, Herrmann, and Orton.
- Is on pace to be 4th all time in season passing yards at around 3800 yards. Only Brees and Painter have posted better seasons.

Passing TDs:
- 5th in school history with 48 career passing TDs.
- So far this season he's jumped Phipps, Everett, and Campbell. Orton has 63, so he'd need to average 2.5 TDs/game to catch him.

Completions:

- 5th in school history with 617 career completions. Will likely not catch Herrmann at 772.
- Will likely end up in the top 10 for completions in a season (currently on pace for 7th all time)

Completion Percentage:
- Blough would be just behind Marve for the highest career completions %.

Some of your numbers are off. He currently has 8102 passing yards which is good for 5th. He is within strikin distance of Orton (9337) and could challenge Herrmann (9946) if we go to a bowl.
He currently has 57 career TDs. He is within striking distance of Orton (63), Painter (67) and Herrmann (71)

He will end up third all time behind Painter and Brees. He could almost walk backwards and pass orton

Am I the only one that does not remember Painter being that good? Perhaps because he followed Brees and Orton, but I thought the guy was mediocre. I certainly don't remember him putting up those huge numbers. Shocking.

He put up huge numbers against the Central Michigan's and B1G bottom feeders. I never remember him beating a respectable team.

Good QB but not a whole lot of talent at the skill positions. Put him in this system and he'd be slinging it around as well as Blough is, IMO. There is a reason he stuck in the NFL for 6 years...just happened his shot came when Indy was pathetic.

His tenure marked the start of the string of losses against ranked teams. He was talented, but shrunk when the lights were brightest.

Painter was really good at Purdue, going into his senior year there was talk of him being a first round pick. He hurt his shoulder and basically played his senior year with a bad shoulder and was kept on a pitch count, which is why he split time, but he was usually the one in there for the two minute drills.

I think that is why people forget about him, the forget he had a bum shoulder his senior year and was limited because of it.

He had Dustin Keller and Dorien Bryant early in his career, so until his senior year, he had some good weapons. He put up big numbers, but he was there right at the end of Tiller's great run when Burke wasn't supporting the football program financially. He was a good QB but suffered from comparisons to Brees and Orton.

Keller and Bryant also graduated, and I don't think that enough receivers stepped up, but yeah, I'd forgotten about the should injury slowing him down, too.

Oh, you're right. I was looking at the 2017 media guide...Corrected now.

Painter also had Greg Orton, so he had plenty of weapons. While doing this exercise I discovered that Greg Orton is:
- 5th all time in receptions
- 6th all time in receiving yards
- 16th all time in receiving TDs

Painter definitely put up impressive stats. Never could seem to get over the hump and notch a big win though.

But compared to the next 5 or so QBs we had (Elliott, Marve, TerBush, Henry, Robinson, Etling, and Applebee) he was amazing.

His tenure marked the start of the string of losses against ranked teams. He was talented, but shrunk when the lights were brightest.
By the end of the Tiller era, the big boys had adjusted to our offense, learned how to keep us out of the end zone, and had the athletes to do it. It also didn't help that the rules at the time were not as conducive to passing, allowing clutching, holding and pretty much blowing up receivers.

Marve was fun to watch. He was a head case, but played damn hard - with no talent around him.

I think 3-4 of those QBs were more talented than Painter but had less weapons.

If you bet me who had more yards - Orton or Painter, I would lose that bet apparently.

Just curious, which four QBs do you think were more talented than painter?

You realize that painter spent more time in the pros than all of them combined, right?

Marve and Etling for sure. And you could argue Appleby and maybe Elliott. As a Colts fan, Painter was absolutely terrible in the pros. But your opinion may differ. That’s fine.
