Not sure if this has already been posted but interesting series on top 25 players in the league for 2017/2018. Carsen is at number 18, Dakota at number 24 and PJ in the 'others' bucket from 26 to 30.

I have to imagine that Isaac is somewhere in the 7 to 15 range and Vince will show up on the top 10.

I can't think of another team heading into the year that would be likely to have 5 players in the top 30, but I could be missing someone.

Clearly a lot of talent there. The question is whether Vince can step up to that elite level and really put this team on his shoulders or if he's truly more of a complementary player. I think we are in trouble if Carson feels that he has to step up and take that role. He's an excellent young player and will get there in time but will be much better if he picks his spots this year as he did over the summer versus feeling like he has to be 'the man'.

I would imagine MSU will have 5 as well. Winston is in the "Other bucket", but I would think Langford, Bridges, JJJ, and Ward will be on the list.

Every year I see these lists where Purdue players a thought very highly of and then come B1G media day are picked to finish 6th or something stupid like that. As I sit here and think about Purdue basketball rarely ends the season mid pack. I am sure someone will call me out with facts. I can remember the years we were very low and in the top three, just don't remember a lot of years finishing 6,7,8.

I think Carsen IS the man and should play like it. He's our most talented and dynamic player and the one who should have the ball in his hands at crunch time. He's the kind of player who can rip off 10 straight points in 90 seconds and change the game.
You have to take the good with the bad, so yes, there's going to be times he makes mistakes but his upside is so good, Painter and the fans have to be willing to live with it.
We haven't had a guard like CE in a really long time (if ever) and you need to let him do his thing.

I firmly believe Carsen is the most capable player we have to create, take, and make tough shots. And that takes talent. Unfortunately, that's only useful in certain situations, like at Michigan where he nearly single-handedly got us back into the game at the very end. I'll take heat for this, but I think people have gotten overly enamored with Carsen this summer. He is crucial to this team because he adds another dimension. He very well might end up as a Purdue great. But to this point, he has been a 38 percent field goal shooter with more turnovers than assists. I get the upside. I do. But those stats matter. His actual production matters. Not just his ceiling. His game is sexy. His potential is tantalizing. His production thus far, in actual Purdue games, has been sporadic and from a holistic, statistical perspective, borderline detrimental. I don't believe it will remain that way. I look for a breakout season from him too. I'm going to wait, though, to give him the keys to the team and anoint him our best player.

Love the comment, he's extremely fun to watch, and i am very excited to see just how good he can be....but for this year, I've got my money on Vince as carrying this team as far as it's going to go. BTFU.

I saw something the other day that said Russell Westbrook set the NBA record for usage in a season last year. It was way ahead of Kobe Bryant at #2. Neither of their teams won a playoff series those years. Teams do better when they function as teams. Carsen was not being a team player when we lost the gold medal.

Not anointing anyone the best player but what Carson does for the team is beyond stats. He changed the dynamic. He HAS to be guarded. I for one am sick to death of watching Purdue die a death of a thousand paper cuts. I want, and believe Purdue needs, that dynamic element. Carson played a lot last year and I am confident that Painter did not see last year as a "throwaway" year. Carson detrimental? Man we must watch completely different sports! Shoot the damn ball boys, let's rock!

Thanks s a funny way of looking at it...I thought getting embarrassed on the boards was the the clear issue. Now I realize it was Edwards. Bench him!

Missing a bunch of shots creates a lot more rebounds doesn't it? Isaac was shooting 80%. That doesn't leave a lot of rebound chances. Carsen was being a ball pig.

I'm thinking that a 17-8 edge in Offensive Rebounding is s bigger problem myself. Led directly to a 20-9 advantage on 2nd chance points. We had a poor shooting day to boot - not why we lost. We lost because we didn't board.

The #1 reason we lost is because Carsen missed 14 shots. I didn't see the game but I bet a few of those were the run down court as fast as possible and fire up a shot that gives us no chance to get back and defend or rebound effectively.

Not sure about Langford but definitely the rest.

Tired legs if you are talking about the gold medal game. A bunch of games in a short period of time. It took a toll. Not making excuses, but I would have expected better shooting if they were fresh. CE was doing what he could. The rest of the team looked pretty slow.

Fatigue was a factor. Rebounding was also a factor. But Carsen missing 14 shots was the biggest factor. It sped the game up and wore us out even more and got us out of position and made the other guys zone out.

You don't like Edwards...check

Apparently the answer is Carson should have been slow as well. Not what I expected. That method should get us far this year. #Counterintuitive.

The thread has shifted to a conversation about Carson Edwards and his performance in the WUG Championship contest. I have wondered how he would approach a game like this one after leading the international team coached by Calipari. How did Calipari coach him? How did he respond to the leadership Calipari entrusted in him. Did it make a difference in W vs L for that team. Then how would that translate to his performance for our team coached by Painter? Did he possess leadership learned and executed in the other international competition? Does anyone see any differences or similarities?

You should watch the game if you can and you'll see that is a flawed assertion.

Vince really struggled to keep his man off the offensive glass in the halfcourt and that was the biggest difference in the game. I'm hoping it was just his ankle limiting his ability to go get rebounds and that doesn't become a theme for this squad.

Pretty clear to me rebounding or lack of it killed us.I can see it as a problem all year especially if JT is limited.

Here's the similarities...he played a lot of minutes, the HCs obviously trusted him, both teams won a lot of games, both teams medaled. So Calipari and Painter seem to be high on the player which makes me wonder what issues others have with him.

Question anybody could answer it. Have anyone of you have ever played pickup ball and played let's say 5 straight games how do you think your legs would feel after the 4th game pretty tired I would imagine. Vince and the team played 8 games in 10 days with 24/ 14 second shot clock and a court that was a tad bigger than your normal college court bcuz the 3 point line was 22 feet 6 inches long tad bit longer than your regulation size college court I say you think your legs would be tired I say yes. My son said they ran out of gas basically but tried to play through it. The starters played a lot of minutes especially in the tougher games and played through and got the wins. The games b4 that they were rebounding from what I watched. Only game they had that problem was the gold medal game and basically ran out of gas and mind you painter basically went with 8 players who played significant minutes so to think rebounded will be an issue we shall see a much deeper bench will be able to help with that. Many teams out here don't have a tone of size and they tend to rebound with the best of them. SC was much smaller than do and they put rebounded them why bcuz they pressured them full court all game and Duke players got tired. Before many of you judge this team on 1 game they got out rebounded in 1 game pump the brakes this team now has size and athleticism as I have said many times I'm on this board to match any team in college basketball. If you don't think painter Is addressing in practice as well as other things the team needed to fix than you don't no painter very well. Until season begins we'll no more about what the team needs will be when the games are being played. To make assumptions without pure facts besides 8 games they played in 10 days to me is unfair assessment of a team who now have had time to works on those areas of concern and fix them. 3 weeks and counting till tip time well no more as season plays out. I for one don't think it's gonna be an issue like many of you think.

To be clear I thought rebounding was the problem and energy was the reason. Still if I was going to guess (which is all I can do at this point) my biggest question mark is rebounding going forward. I see pluses in so many areas - shooting, assists, depth, size - but rebounding is nagging at me.

Why is it nagging you bcuz no swanigan down there rebounding I can see how that may have you wondering how this team can replace what he did. How about this 7"3,6"10,6"9,6"9"6"6 all the new comers only and I believe that is a lot of size and athleticism to help get it done I'm optimistic we'll be fine in that area. How do you think teams without shooters on there team feel but as a coach you figure out your roster and see what works

Absolutely right...Swanigan was worth a ticket just to see the rebounding. If you read my post I specifically mention shooting, size, depth. I'm very happy to be only a bit worried about rebounding and I am hopeful that nagging doubt will resolve itself when we start playing this season. To rephrase it...on my list of things to worry about with this team rebounding is at the top and not extremely worried about rebounding. Based on being a Purdue fan for over 40 years I can say that I am extremely happy to be only slightly worried about rebounding going down not a season. I could be worried about size, depth, experience, shooting, chemistry, turnovers, speed, etc. Says a lot that I am not.

Amen. 40+ year fan here. I'm thrilled to have rebounding as the biggest worry I have. There have been years I was worried about everything you listed all at the same time!!

Maybe our worries will be put to bed early this year, I'm hopeful of that. We will find out before long...

Haas is at 17.

One quibble - They obviously didn't look at last year's numbers when coming up with this paragraph:

Additionally, Haas’ foul trouble has always been an issue since arriving at Purdue. That is an area that he will need to work on for the Boilermakers. Last season, he only averaged 19 minutes per game because he could not stay on the court.

Second quibble - How does someone they say will most likely finish 2nd team All Big Ten end up 17th?

Your best player should be a ball hog . This isn't YMCA basketball where every gets to shoot or the Hickory Huskers where you pass 4 times. This is big boy basketball where you put the ball in the hands of your best player and let him go to work.
I want to see CE be aggressive and taking control of the offense. He creates a lot of problems for the defense and him being aggressive creates opportunities for perimeter shooters on kick outs or draws the bigs on drives allowing offensive rebounding opps for our bigs.
Vince is a really good player and could end up All-B10, but I'm not sure he's our crunch time guy.
