The Big Ten announced today that six games will be played on Friday night. Three non conference and three conference. Michigan said that they will not participate. OSU said that they will not host a game due to parking conflicts. MSU said that they would only host a game on Labor Day weekend.

What do you think about this? I am not a big fan of weekday games. Friday nights are suppose to be for High School football. Saturday should be the only day that they have college football games. It seems to me that this is all about tv ratings. Since the BTN can only get three games on their station on a given Saturday they thought hmm what can we do to add another game. All about the money my friends.

The exclusions by Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State are a cheesy as it gets because all three are playing in Friday Night Doubleheader Hockey Games on the BTN in conflict with HS football and HS basketball E V E R Y Friday night from October through March. So where is this drop-to-the-knees Friday night reverence for high schools when they're airing hockey?

Having said that, widespread cable cutting is rapidly creating a sink-or-swim environment for TV revenue. The B1G needs to expand into Friday night, Thursday night , Monday night, whatever it takes to kill off the AAC and the ACC and the MWC and the Big XII.

Kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Next move will be for the NFL to start playing on Saturday afternoons.

No Friday is for HS Football.....end of discussion.

Plus if they do it it should be for all, no just for some...all schools in Big sign off on it and all participate in it.

Schools saying they won't should be enough to tell everyone it is a bad idea.

And you thought fans didn't like Saturday noon kickoffs. Friday night games will be impossible for many fans to make without taking time off work.

OSU said they will host a game every 3 years. There is a ton of discussion about what benefit (other than the almighty $$$) this brings to teams in the B1G on just about every other board.

I for one welcome the idea of purdue getting a nationally televised night game. With Notre Dame not playing us every other year at home we are getting 0 national exposure. If we could host or play a Friday night game a year that will be a net benefit for Purdue. So 9 B1G will be playing on Friday. MSU already starts off its season on Friday. So that gives us 8-11 shot of Primetime non B1G game. With PSU, Mich, and OSU either never playing one or only once in a blue moon that really gives purdue a shot at getting eyes on the program. A couple of BIG showings and we may improve in recruiting. Being able to sell recruits on a primetime game could sway some kids.

Lets face it no one is really showing up to purdue games so it doesn't matter if they played it sunday at midnight.

I think it is just the idea of playing on Friday nights. It is all about money which makes me mad. BTN is just looking for ways to fit another game on tv. Do you really think the ratings will be that big when Purdue plays host to a MAC school or who ever? I doubt it.

How much money is really going to be made off the
Friday night death slot? Worst TV ratings night of the week.

Russilo and Kannel seemed to be all for it and was surprised the Big Ten was the one to consider it since they are usually the most stubborn about sticking to tradition.

Let's think this through.

Many high school football games are played on Saturday afternoons and I was a HS football official who officiated more than a few of them 20-30 years ago.

How many HS basketball games are being played on Saturday this week? Next week? the answer is hundreds of thousands.

And the AAU. Those goons round up HS kids of all ages and genders to play Friday Saturday Sunday Summer Fall Winter Spring whatever it takes to bring in those dollars from the recruiters.

We need to continue hammering a financial divide between the P5 and the children of a lesser god.

When your entire AD is dependent on the B1G TV contract, you really aren't in a position to complain about when and where you play your games. I think we're still making out pretty well on the deal, all things considered.

Nailed it...very succinctly. Don't think for a minute that "the have's" in the B1G are tired of carrying "the have not's" like Purdue, so as a consequence, teams like Purdue that are sharing equally in revenue despite generating next to none of it for the B1G get to play on Friday night instead.

I'm not for Friday night games but I guarantee a Friday night B1G game would have much higher ratings than the 4th B1G on Saturday afternoon playing on ESPNU.

I agree - this time slot sucks. So much of college football is about tailgating. A 7:30 kick allows no time for pre-game activities (without spending vacation time).

I hope they are at least somewhat smart about this and target the larger metropolitan areas (Chicago, Twin cities, Jersey) for the Friday night games. Smaller percentage of people who have to travel, take time off.

Some thoughts...

Friday is much better than Thursday night games.

All other P5 conferences are doing it right now except the SEC. They're trying to close the revenue gap with the B1G and the SEC and we don't want them to do that.

One game per school every three years isn't going to interfere with very much HS football.

A lot of HS football and hoops is played on Saturdays. Ditto soccer, swimming etc.

I don't have a lot of heartburn with this.

Just curious, how many of you watch Thursday night NFL games? Probably not too many.

Pretty much saw this coming. It's a bummer, I think public attendance at those games will be way lower than a Saturday afternoon. Seems like it means a day off work (or half) for anyone outside of greater Laf & Indy, and let's face it that's not likely given current state of the team. On the plus side, I can imagine some decent promotions and activities to stimulate student attendance on Friday nights.

Friday night ratings are horrible. This is a dumb move by the Big Ten. Especially when during the season on Saturdays, the BTN doesn't even have games playing in all 3 major time slots.
