Big Ten Coaches’ Perceptions of League Programs

I actually agree with a lot of the article. IU is the best job in the conference AND the IU fans need to get realistic. I also agree the Purdue job ranking... mostly. We are certainly better than Maryland.

I always understood IU, OSU and Maryland to be the best 3 jobs, in no particular order

I would say before joining the BIG 10, I had thought the Maryland job was a great job.

I'd also have to agree on his assessment of West Lafayette. I've been around a lot of college towns due to traveling and following my son's track team. I love West Lafayette. My wife grew up there. It has an outstanding school system.. but in comparison with other college communities, it is rather low especially when you have people here fighting over the two best restaurants are Bruno's verses Arnies. Madison has Lafayette beat hands down.

Is Madison great with so many entertainment choices because of U of W or is it because it's the state capital?

it's great because I was born there.

it's a cosmopolitan culture with something for everybody.

in the 60's people would go to the football games just to watch the band.

there's plenty of night life, but also a lot of day life. part of it's charm is that it's centrally located with tourist attractions less than an hour away, and big city life in Milwaukee only an hour away. It has concerts as well as world class hospitals. it is a very liberal community with a liberal city government.

as far as state capital, yes, it does have a lot of state government employees who are mostly white collar with decent salaries who are also willing to spend their money. taxes are high, but the people are willing to pay them because they see the results.

yes there is a lot of drinking and bars, but the crime rate is rather low.

and for those that just want to get away from it all, it has 4 lakes.

but the main thing, is there is something for everybody. it's a gathering place. if you consider what you can do and where you can go within an hour, the two closest comparisons I could provide are St Louis and Orlando. it just seems a lot larger than it is.

I agree with much said here. I have always thought West Lafayette was sort of blue collar for a college town. It has always felt more industrial than college focused.

Madison, Ann Arbor, Evanston, and maybe Columbus have it beat by a mile. Lansing is dirty and pedestrian. Bloomington is nice and has an odd small town feel to it. Penn State College is nicely placed in the mountains, but there is not much there. Can't offer opinions about the other places.

That said, a scholarship basketball player can always find things to do even with his very limited free time, no matter where. Even the kids in West Laffy have lots to do and plenty of social opportunities.

Find a girl who is an engineer and she can support you for life! Go to IU and marry an English major, and you'll spend your time at rallies wearing the latest color de jure, when you are not working your butt off to make the mortgage on the double wide.

Or go to IU and get a degree that puts you in a position where your wife will never have to work a day in her life...

Just another reason for us to kick Wiscy's ass every time we can.

There is more to life than being in a basketball arena 24/7. Sorry I'm a fan not a fanatic or bakerball junkee like some. I don't eat sleep and dream Purdue basketball or the latest rivals hoops top 50 recruits. I hardly even know their names. Go Boilers but I also have a life outside this board and boiler sports.

It doesn't seem like it.:rolleyes:

I'm not a big fan of Indy either. That being said, I don't like the campuses of Marquette or UWm in Milwaukee. I like Knoxville and Nashville, but Louisville and Lexington were just ok. Sometimes a college town can be too big. UTSA and San Antonio were nice as was USF and Tampa. I was not impressed with either Ann Arbor or Columbus.

What if Purdue was located in Ft Wayne or South Bend?

I’m a little confused as to how Indiana gets a #3 for recruiting base and Purdue gets a #10? Is it just the branding that Indiana can recruit ‘natuonally’?
I had the same thought. I would have expected Purdue and IU to have the same recruiting base. I definitely do not agree with that part. IMO Purdue and IU should both have a "1" in recruiting base, because I believe the state of Indiana produces the best talent in the big ten.

And, after the football games, it's a great stadium for turkey shoots and deer skinning. Best thing about it is that there's a Ho Chunk Casino where I've paid for two vacations.

This is true, even into the '80s. Wisconsin and Northwestern battled for the bottom of the B10, yet Wisky fans would fill the stands. Long after the game was over they would be partying in the stands listening to the band.

Caterpillar, Subaru, Alcoa, Lilly manufacturing, (now Evonik), Wabash National, GE Aviation, Tate & Lyle, Cargill, ... With this manufacturing base, it's definitely a blue color town.

Lafayette is definitely blue collar. You'd think West Lafayette would be a white collar liberal town, but they are too busy writing research papers and text books and lesson plans and working 15 hour days to get out and party and enjoy life. Even when they go to the bars they are talking shop. I've been to several west Lafayette high school reunions. All they ever talk about is academics.

Adults "Perception" but to ask a recruit could be different and the only one that matters. I guess Carsen should be in Houston for the night life? Perception would have IU at the top every year. I haven't seen that consistently since RMK. Perception as an adult is greatly different than a kids.

It’s humbling to see so many IU fans coming here seeking our validation of your program.
We sure do seem to have this going on a lot here. I mean that list is great and all, but it doesn't equate to wins. If it did, we wouldn't beat them nearly as often as we do :D

Except none of those are in West Lafayette. West Lafayette regularly makes the list for best small towns, best place to live, most educated, etc. I think West Lafayette takes a hit because it’s so close to Lafayette. If it was just West Lafayette by itself - particularly with the current revitalization that’s going on - I would put it up against any similar sized college town. It’s ridiculous to compare it Madison, Evanston, Columbus, etc.

I don't understand things like this. I don't really care what the average assistant thinks about Purdue. I care what the exceptional coaches think about Purdue.

This is so obviously subjective, but I think we forget that. Isn't everybody different? If I took a poll on this board of "which job should I take" between downtown Chicago and zionsville, I think the responses would be split on personality difference. Is the average of those responses meaningful at all?

Further, shouldn't stability be factored into this somehow? I would think two coaches in the past 38 years (accompanied by the wins racked up) is the best sign that it's a good job.

This is exactly what we do. I saw you posting on the board in May, just like like the rest of us. I’m going to call BS on this one.

I post on many boards. You just read the ones I post here. I'm what some would call an internet junkie. I have many sides, names, and many opinions. As I said, my life doesn't revolve around Purdue basketball.

I don't think of academics as a topic only for white collar conservatives. What should a white collar liberal be discussing?

Ever been to an evening party with a bunch of optometrists? Trust me, it's a snoozer unless you really like listening to conversations about eye diseases

I went to school at PU in the 80s, worked in the area a few years after, and go to an occasional ball game, but I couldn't tell you what West Lafayette is without Purdue. I don't think you can separate Lafayette from West Lafayette when discussing Purdue and the college town. Take Purdue out of West Lafayette and all you would have is a couple strip malls.

The reality is I never left Campus except to go to a few bars and its most likely still the case. Not only at Purdue but probably at most colleges.

You shouldn’t be going to “evening parties” while rehabbing anyway my friend. *smile*

I know what you mean. I once attended a dinner with a bunch of MDs where the discussion drifted into areas that I was raised not to discuss at the dinner table. You might be surprised to know how many causes there are for loose bowel movements.
