Big Bad ACC/B1G/PAC-12 Alliance

Yeah, I'm not sure what any kind of "alliance" can do, short of somehow breaking away along with everyone else not named the SEC into their own league so to speak.

This will unite the 3 conferences, but to what end? An extra game every year? Big deal, most already do that anyway. Will they all agree to NOT play non-conference games against the SEC, forcing them to continue to play Sun Belt and FCS teams? I can't imagine FSU turning their back on Florida though. I think we have a home and home with Ole Miss down the road. Do we break that? Return game to Vanderbilt also?

Hate to say it but it seems like a nothingburger.
Wrong. This is about $$$$. It’s about thwarting the SEC’s attempt to make itself the only viable major conference. It’s about showing ESPN that their deal with the SEC is not the end all, be all. It helps give the BIG a stronger bargaining position with all the TV networks when it’s current contracts expire.

This move was a smart, sensible agreement that joins three (really 2 1/2 with PAC 12) conferences and 41 schools together. The 3 conferences get to keep their leagues intact, get to schedule intriguing match-ups in the future with each other, and strengthens the BIG’s bargaining power in 2023 in the TV contract negotiations. It blunts the SEC’s ability to call the shots for everyone else.

The real loser in this is the Big XII. They are running out of good options at this point. Any teams they add will only marginally help them.

What is the problem with Warren? Seems like this alliance is a good move for the btn.
This "alliance" will likely be nothing but a paper tiger. And if you don't remember his botched COVID delay last year, not sure what to say...

I remember, but I thought it was better to err on the side of player safety based on the medical info at the time. If I recall, it was the presidents who made that call, not Warren.

maybe. but, there was really no "medical info" that supported "err(ing) on the side of player safety". (In fact, there's really been ZERO "medical info" to support much of the idiotic decisions that have been made in the name of "COVID safety" for youth and young adults.)

As I recall, Warren took a lot of hits, as he didn't seem to demonstrate any leadership whatsoever at that time.

Agree. There is no doubt in my mind Delaney would have had a different outcome. The fact they tried to get other conferences to follow is pitiful.

The medical info was a legitimate concern about myocarditis developing in athletes who got covid, right?

The Pac 10 and other conferences had the same concern.

Delaney wouldnt have been outmaneuvered by the SEC. He also wouldnt have orchestrated the shit show last season.
What outmaneuvering by the SEC? Signing Tex and Ok? Do you think the btn should have acted to bring in those two money-grubbing schools that dishonorably left their in-state partner schools behind?

Yeah, he bad. Especially considering the dude who went to the ACC was a better candidate
Phillips was Delany’s choice to succeed him as Commissioner. The Presidents and AD’s went a different direction. Warren is competent, but JP would’ve been far better. Water under the bridge now.

Yes. Texas for sure.
I thought the btn talked to Tex and ND in the past, but being the arrogant, money-grubby football-priority schools they are, they wanted their own tv networks and so forth.

I would gladly trade rut, md, michigan state, penn state and the poppers for Tex in a package deal.

Texas said no because of the longhorn network, which failed.

Nd would make more money in the big ten (I think). Independence is their identity

It's a different world in which we live. It's not always about who is perceived as the best "choice".

The Presidents and ADs were looking to break new ground, and Warren did that for them. I'm hoping he turns out to be the best B1G Commissioner in the history of this great conference.

Was only saying JP was Delany’s choice. Warren may do great things, but Phillips was a more qualified candidate. The ACC couldn’t be happier.

Even though he's not the commish, do you think Delaney had a hand in forming this alliance? Maybe as an outside consultant.

No. I cannot agree with that narrative.

If it truly was, no athletes would have been competing, ever. With or without facemasks. With or without students present. Indoors or out.

If the concerns were "legit", sports (and life) would have been shut down.

What would you have done? Brought Kansas and Iowa State into the BIG?
I would have been more proactive when I saw the Big 12 faltering over the past 5 years. The opportunities were there for the B1G. The SEC actually took some action rather than being reactive. And if you look at last year, Warren looked foolish and displayed absolutely no leadership while the SEC played on. I don't see anyone looking back at the SEC's decisions and second guessing them.

Why do you believe that something needed to be done? The SEC added OU and UT. That doesn't mean that the B1G needs to do something.
I didn’t say we needed to add anyone. I don’t think there’s anyone out there worth adding besides Notre Dame (not happening anytime soon), maybe Texas A&M (unlikely), North Carolina (unlikely), etc. I was responding to someone who thought the BIG’s agreement was useless. It’s not at all.

The alliance should demand the playoffs stay at 4 and the bids go to the 4 remaining major conference champions. Let's see how many programs jump to the SEC under those conditions and let's see how much longer Notre Dame chooses to remain independent. SEC just wants to stack their football team and try to guarantee 3+ teams into the expanded playoffs going forward.

Not really. And I didn't say Maryland was a mistake. Just Rutgers...

Rutgers got this conference a WHOLE lot of $$$$ that was dispersed to all of our schools the second BTN was picked up for basic cable in the NYC market. Good academic school, huge potential for bandwagon fans when they’re good (their 2006 game vs. UL is still the highest rated college game in NYC history) and they provide other Big Ten schools with a much easier pitch to East Coast recruits, not to mention an opportunity for the tens of thousands of B1G alumni in that area to see their teams in person more regularly.

You can dislike it as a fan or comment on RU’s lack of athletic success or say you personally don’t like losing the geographic cohesion/culture fits we had, but … it was not a dumb move.

Clearly you're a Rutgers fan. NYC is a pro ball market, not a college market. Nobody there gives a shit about Rutgers...
