You have already seen this, but Barret Benson committed to Northwestern, not altogether shocking considering the way that recruitment was trending. He is very much an academic-minded kid who wasn't going to jump at the biggest basketball program he could find. Thought early on he might jump at Purdue's science rep but even though he has deep ties to the school, there never seemed to be all that strong a draw for Benson to Purdue for whatever reason, or at least there wasn't once he started getting scholarship offers.
Did Purdue cool on Benson? Our guess would be probably. Would Purdue still have taken Benson? Our guess is again, probably. But maybe not as the only big in its class. Benson has long had all the potential in the world, but there are still some things that haven't clicked quite yet, things he'll be able to play through at a place like Northwestern. The way Purdue is playing in the post now, it needs a little something more, IMO.
