Arrogance

I don't appreciate that UNC declining further degrades the NIT, which is a shame. It is ridiculous that the NIT is generally looked upon as a tournament of also-rans when that is plainly not the case.

Are you sure about that?? They just got beat by Hofstra at home and gave up 88 points. Not a good team.
We beat Hofstra in December by 19 but I think they were missing a starter. Wow, no defense tonight though from Rutgers.

Remember in’73 when Purdue won the NIT there was a big pep rally in Mackey Arena that Sunday night after the team flew back in from NYC. It did mean alot more back then. I think you had to finish 2nd in the B1G just to get in the NIT.

The B1G is going to have a rough go of it in the Tournament.

Even if they win their first games (most of which are toss ups) 6 teams will need to play either the 1st or 2nd seed in the second round. Not a bold prediction to say the B1G will lose 3 teams in the first round and 3 more in the second. Only Purdue and IU have a legitimate shot to make some noise in the tourney.

I've been hearing whispers that there is a lot more than bad basketball happening with that program. Lots of team chemistry issues, starting with the guards.
Yeah, I live down here. Definitely lots of chemistry issues. Reminds me a bit of those Terone/Ronnie Johnson Purdue teams where the team just didn't mesh. Hubert Davis seems like a good guy, so I hope he figures it out.

what is the origin of that nickname?

Haha.

This actually goes back to one of my better friends from Purdue (who was also one of my roommates during most of my time in the dorms), and his time following Purdue pre-dates mine. He would tell me stories of Schaus getting animated and getting up all the time during games - back when it was less common than now....so in order to avoid an unnecessary technical foul - he said they should have given him a seatbelt. I don't know if this came from others.....or if it was just his and a few others adopted it (like me)......and maybe is just part of Purdue legend, but my buddy would use the term and get animated about it.

If I remember correctly, Jerry Nichols broke his leg during the NIT.

Yes - it was actually the '73/'74 season - second year for head coach Fred "Seatbelt" Schaus.
I have the 7up souvenir bottle 1974 Purdue NIT champs. Only $18?! I found one on Ebay
