Appleby transferring?

Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Appleby drop down to FCS to play immediately and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him at Illinois State next season.

I hope it's not true - I still like him over Blough. However, I hope he's able to find success wherever he goes - he's put up with enough BS in his years here, already.

If appleby graduates in the spring, why couldn't he play immediately at any school, as a fifth year transfer?

because he is a RS JR. He has two years of eligibility left and with the rules of the fifth year graduate, he would essentially be forfeiting that second year. He would be better served to go down to an FCS school and get his degree and then 5th year transfer back up to the FBS level to a program where he can showcase his skills if he wants to make a run at an NFL career OR with a coach he has history with to latch on to the coaching staff when he is done.

I personally think Appleby latches on as a coach at a lower level school and works his way up as a positions coach. If this chips fall right for him, he could become an OC at a smaller level school.

No he doesnt. He just finished his 3 year. He has 1 year remaining. He is done with his degree this month.

Austin still has a RS year available. I thought he RS'd his freshman year which would have meant he had two more years to play (5 to play 4). According to the Purdue site, Appleby is a true junior, which would mean he would have a RS year available if he wanted to transfer. With having two years available, the best option would be to drop to the FCS level and then return for his 5th year as a graduate student at an upper level program, IMO. I just personally have never heard of a player using the graduate transfer for a '5th year' as a true senior.

AA came in in 2012 and redshirted. He just finished his RS JR year. He has 1 year remaining.

My stance on Appleby and Blough is that we just don't know. Put a bunch of QBs with a dumpster fire like Shoop and you couldn't possibly know what you have.

I'll say it again for those who glossed over it for years as though to say "oh well, he just made a good point, I'll act like I don't see it."

Pretty much all of your spacing of wide receivers can be traced back to BYU's Lavell Edwards among others. He had triangles similar to Tex Winter in the NBA, to make sure that he could get receivers as far from one another as possible, yet still advanced up field. His chapter in any coaching text book available will make you realize that the spread is just Edwards on steroids. It's asking, "what if you use Lavell Edwards type spacing but with four and five receivers?" And that's how BYU beats a defending National Champion Miami team and how Tiller's spread beats teams with much more talent early on, etc.

So, if you think about that... being about to draw a triangle of receivers with one point being advanced up field and then other points being in a far triangle, but still up field...

WHAT THE F DO YOU THINK HAPPENS WHEN YOU MOTION ONE GUY FIVE YARDS BEHIND SCRIMMAGE AND SNAP THE BALL WHEN THE MOTION MAN IS STILL FIVE YARDS BEHIND SCRIMMAGE, BUT NOW NEAR THE SIDELINE AND THEN RUN A BUNCH OF HORIZONTAL BUNCH ROUTES THAT PUT RECEIVERS CLOSE TO EACH OTHER?

You're doing the dead opposite of spreading the defense. You're saying, in essence, "we must have Calvin Johnson, because we're putting enough of your defenders by each one of your receivers for you to actually cover Calvin Johnson.

So, how the hell would any of you know if Appleby rules or sucks or is any better or worse than Blough or vice versa. Separate someone not even passing the laugh test like Brandon Hance or Rob Henry (throwing), how would any of us know? I bet you both look good in 7-on-7. Well, consider this.. the conditions of a John Shoop offense are about as opposite of 7-on-7 as you could simulate if you were trying without involving Jim "don't call me Rich Kotite" Tom Shula.

I hope Appleby stays and wish him well if he goes... but this idea that "we don't need him" is hilarious. I can just see it now.. we're on a roll (which for this team would be 3-3), Blough is injured and every play we're just one play away from wishing we had Austin Appleby back..

Actually, the kid that came in for a play against IU seemed to throw a decent ball and looked athletic. He was a pretty good QB in high school and I've seen him in practices. He would do a serviceable job (with a competent OC/QB) in replacing the QB's if two guys go down. The fact is that there is rarely a school with three QB's in the stable (as Purdue had) that can come in and run the offense efficiently and smoothly. You are only going to get that at places like Alabama, Oklahoma, OSU, and a handful of other programs. Having three guys at once with the talent level that we have seen at Purdue is a rarity...especially for a program that hasn't done jack shhhhh the last 4 years.

AA will be missed great kid and leader......

We need the following formula:
1) Good O Coordinator
2) Good D Coordinator
3) Good O Line (Haven't really had since Bree's days, had some good pieces but need solid commits who gel together)
4) Good Defense (I think the pieces are there if the line backers can stay healthy and we learn to stop the run first, which takes depth)

I think we have two strong QB's and I think Sindelar starts next year with Blough as the back-up......

I think we have the running back depth as well with Jones, Knox, Green and Yancey, just need the O Line needs to open the holes.

With Sindelar we will go more vertical with the passing routes on the edges and down the middle with our experienced TE's returning and because he has a cannon for an arm, but it will need to be set up by the run.

All starts with who Hazzel hires on O and D coach and if they can get the team motivated to play to win.

Big mountain to climb the next few years to get back to winning ways, but I will support the kids and the effort 100%.

Because as a alumni and fan that is what I am supposed to do, no negativity, just positive support.

Boiler Up!
I will also still be supporting my Boilers... Just not financially, or in person, until the curtain drops on the clown show.

We desperately need a new head coach.

I agree. We've been very fortunate to get the QBs we've had and I'm crossing my fingers we get an OC that can develop and coach DB and ES. It sucks we've lost two out of the four, but I still maintain we've kept the two with the
highest upside.

Potentially, we haven't seen Etling play yet. And yes, we all know we need a good OC who will actually develop these guys.

AA has one more year to play but if a player graduates after three years and has used his redshirt he can play 2 years as a graduate transfer ala Jacob Coker at Alabama.
In addition it is my understanding that if you are graduating you do not need permission from the coaching staff to look around. You simply have to file for graduation and inform the compliance office of your intention. The compliance officer is supposed to keep that confidential even from the Coaching staff. So it would not surprise me if the coaching staff was unaware of his intention to transfer. And that being spotted at the practice was happenstance. Either way good luck to AA I'm sure he will make the best business decision for himself bc the coaching staff is doing the same.

You get 5 years to play 4. Coker graduated as a redshirt Soph (3 years at FSU, 1 redshirt year and 2 playing), which allowed him to have 2 years at Alabama. Appleby has taken 4 years (1 redshirt, 3 playing). He only has 1 year to play as a graduate transfer.

No I agree with that. Just clarifying for the poster that said you would have only one year of eligibility under the graduate transfer rule.

Oh ok, I took it as you'd thought Appleby would have 2 years similar to Coker has had. I misread.
