Three years ago I mentioned to the Purdue coaching staff about a young man from Chicago who was quite interested in becoming a Boilermaker. He sent all the film in, came down to camp there and had a great first 5 games in his senior year of High school. Said James was too small and he was on the board but not quite good enough to play here. Since then you see what James has done. Great article in todays news of upcoming opponent. He is so looking forward to coming down here to show DH what he missed out on. Don't know how to get this staff to listen or inform them of kids in Chicago catholic league who would want the opportunity to play at Purdue. Good luck DH, Good old #20 from Nevada has something to prove. I bet you will remember him after he tears us up this fall

If other P5 schools offer we are not getting the kid. We are competing against the MAC and conference USA or whatever the heck they are called today. We don't crack the top 100 in anybody's poll and we have an AD ok with that.

Irrelevant to my point

Yea, well sadly The Haze is likely going to make the entire Nevada football program look like national title contenders so.... yea, really a moot point.

He was so good that other p5 schools offered?
Iowa was the only other P5 school in on him then Iowa's rb coach went to Nevada. Look at our roster now have a good one in #8. after that we don't have anyone as nearly productive, big or fast as Butler. The target and qualifications keep moving. If our staff thinks we are going to steal a kid from Michigan State, Texas or Houston now forget it. That is the truth where are program is and will be there until the change is made

You move the target a tad far. Not even iu or Illinois offered the kid

Who is asking for high level? How about they compete with iu and Illinois?
Nat, how many times have we been beaten up about our comments on recruiting Chicago talent. Wins over Indiana,Illinois and Minnesota would be a nice start. Best of luck to James.

They need to recruit Chicago, but building a team on players with no bcs offers won't improve things

It's about knowing talent, knowing the kid, building relationships with coaches and players to find out who the kid is and the ceiling for the individual. NOT some dancing with the stars rating. Sure the 4 and 5 star kids are talented but we are not going to get sniff of them until we start winning. We can't even get alumni kids to play here how embarrassing is that. Forget BCS offer players how about getting some of Western Michigan kids or NIU kids. e Wsteal one or two from them every year and they continually are in bowl games, that is where we are at, and not happy about it

You realize the niu kids had Mac offers and play a Mac schedule right?

The posters on here get dumber and more desperate to trash the program by the day.

All has been said that's needed to be said about Hazell.

We will soon have a new AD with the chance to make a splash hire to move us forward. I will judge the future of the program then....not in the dying days of the last of many of MBs mistakes.

sweet baby jesus, we have a roster with a bunch of kids with offers just like this kid and Hazell gets killed for his recruiting, now he's getting killed because he doesn't also offer these kids. Guess what, he's recruited a lot of diamonds, and we're still just waiting to see how shiny they are. Dexter being one of them, ready to have another good year before the ACL. How about our starting center Kirk Barron.

Greg Phillips is solid and could blossom. David Rose has come on. Tario Fuller will probably need to step up now. I just don't understand what you people want. You want him to recruit every 2-star, but only if they are certifiably going to be a huge success otherwise he needs to only recruit 4 and 5 stars.

You are right about one thing DH is getting killed, ON THE FIELD for his recruiting!!! The results speak for themselves. It's a no issue that we have not been getting the recruits either Tiller or Hope got commitments from. We have been in the cellar in recruiting in the BIg ten for DH's tenure and it shows once again. Hope you are not calling the two qb's diamonds that transferred if so we got a Cubic Zirconium instead. He has not recruited a lot of diamonds unless you call getting a letter from DH recruiting a Diamond . Having relationships with coaches and players over their soph thru senior years is the way to get a opportunity to recruit the 4 and 5 star kids. Continuity is the staff recruiting areas hasn't happened and that is why we will struggle in the near future. Cant remember when we had been in the finals for a 4 or 5 star kid. Doesn't happen anymore to old Purdue. Love kirk barron but taking three years to start doesn;t tarnish who he is as a person but at 6' you would not see him in the middle of anyone else's line in the Big Ten Wake up

You do know that if we would of had him then we wouldn't have had DJ Knox? James Butler would have ended up backing up Markell Jones this season instead of what he's become at UNR

So relevant it's sickening. Purdue has to start landing diamonds in the rough. It's obvious this staff cannot recruit at a high level.
By definition a "diamond in the rough" is likely a 2 star. We've been recruiting at that level for years. If we were recruiting at a high level, we wouldn't need to worry about diamonds in the rough.

Thanks for agreeing...sort of. If you define a "diamond in the rough" as a two star, and I'm fine with that, it has to be a two star that performs at a superior level, i.e. 3, 4, or 5 star level. Tiller used to be able to get "nobody" recruits to the NFL. Hazell...not so much. Time to make a big hire next time. Hopefully, the new AD gets to do it and the hire will be his first big stamp on athletics.
