All BT teams

Loyer will probably be Honorable Mention - not sure I'd put him top 15, maybe top 20. 4th best player is probably Cox when you look at total impact, then I'd say it's Furst/Colvin, then Heide/Harris. Harris' stock is on the rise to me.

This team didn't have much margin for error - failed to close out Michigan and Illinois, meltdown @ Indiana, and gave away the Ohio State game - that's enough to take them out of contention. It's the same end result but not the same as getting thoroughly whipped, like at Penn State. They put themselves in position to win a lot - just didn't close well enough.....that shows a higher ceiling than some might think with this group (maybe not this season).....but they definitely have consistent weaknesses, so they would probably need some fortunate match-ups to advance far in the NCAA Tournament. Still leaning #4-seed.

JMHO
Agree that Loyer will likely be HM. There aren't 15 players I'd take before him, but that's just my opinion.

Regarding advancing in NCAAT, I think there are two paths 1) luck into positive matchups as you mentioned 2) the team goes on a heater from deep. For as inconsistent as they've been, this team is really tough to beat if they take care of the ball and shoot it at 40 to 45% from three.

I think Nate Bittle or Koby Johnson win DPOY.
Bittle I could see for sure. The bias in me says Leal. But he just doesn't have the box score stats for it. Leads the conference in DBPM but doesn't have the steals or blocks per game to catch eyes. He will get first team and that's all we as fans care about. Koby Johnson could as well. But yea, looking at Bittle I think he gets it.

Anthony Leal not being on the All Defensive team is a crime. Oregon gets two spots and Baldwin is even listed. A
Sorry, but a NOPE!
All Big 10 teams.

Freshman - first 3 listed are definite 1st team. Flip a coin on the other 3. Maybe Queen and Jakucionis 1st team.
Richardson - MSU
Bailey - Rutgers
Harper - Rutgers
Queen - Maryland
Jakucionis - Ill
Riley - Ill

1st team
Tonje - Wisc
TKR - Pur
Goldin - Mich
Williams - Neb
Smith - Pur

2nd team
Harper - Rutgers
Thornton - OSU
Garcia - Minn
Martinelli - NW
Bilodeau - UCLA
Close, Good Job. Congrats Braden and TKR!

We're Purdue, so option 1 is unlikely. No matter what happens, Purdue has to batten down the hatches defensively to have a chance. Otherwise, this team could become the next victim of a highly athletic mid-major in the first or second round.

Kind of semantics, but I'll rephrase it to say we are the sixth seed in the big ten tournament if you don't want to count the tie breakers in our big ten ranking.

I would probably put Garcia above him just because I don't think we will have two players there, even if he might deserve it.
Welp, Braden and TKR were voted first teamers.

Well done Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn, deserving winners. A nod to Fletcher Loyer - honorable mention (media). Boilers still have a lot to play for and plenty of season left if they want it.

Man, I hope we keep this team together. I can't imagine this team not winning the B1G next year and making a very deep run in the tourney.

Props to Smith and TKR. Props to MSU and their coach Izzo.

I am led to wonder what will happen at Rutgers next year. Will their two star players return? Will they attract any new one and dones? Having two nba players sure didn’t help them win very many games. I honestly believe they were a better team last year without them.

Wule, if you were projected as a top 3 pick, like the Rutgers top 2 are, would you come back to school?

And piekell (sp) won’t ever sell his soul again for the team he had this year lmao

Nothing more sportsman like than having to sit the bench to begin the year when you're one *ACTUALLY* one of the best defenders in the conference and you have to watch Woodson fumble the season away.
Look BS, neither the media nor the coaches thought your precious Leal was worthy of the defensive team. So take your whining over to your own board where maybe somebody will agree with you.

I believe Leal kicked Furst in the nuts purposely and therefore shouldn't be considered for any sportsmanship awards.

Considering who they picked and who they picked for DPOY... I've yet to see anyone actually agree with the All-Defensive team or DPOY. But I get it, we aren't allowed to criticize their picks and Purdue are still mad that Leal locked up Smith.

Maybe we’re due? The early exits in recent years have been mostly driven by an inability to score. I’m not saying this team is completely immune but I don’t think they’ll have trouble scoring.

It'll be interesting where Purdue is placed. They can still get a 3 seed and you're pretty clear of getting upset for the most part. 4 seeds pretty safe. You really just want to fall to the 5. I don't know what it is, but there is almost always a 12 over 5. Sometimes 2.

You were the only one on here talking him up beforehand for the team. There were several that tried to tell you he wouldn't be on it. Yet, when it's announced, here you are....
Look, if the media doesn't put your guy on there who cares right? They don't know what they are talking about. But when the coaches don't either, that tells you what they think of him. Obviously not enough of them were that impressed with his defense. But I guess you know better than all of them.

I really don't get why you spend so much time here, but it's a free board and we don't have hall monitors that toss people from other teams so I guess you feel more comfortable here than on say an IU board. Whatever, but don't go looking for people to agree with you when you talk crap like this with Leal. At least he made the Sportsmanship team you should be really proud of that one....

some quick stats from google:

I was curious about 4 v 13 and here are the stats there:

Thirty-three No. 13 seeds have upset No. 4 seeds since the NCAA tournament field expanded in 1985. Going into the 2025 NCAA tournament, No. 13 seeds had a 33-123 record all-time. That equated to a 21.15 winning percentage.

In the last 5 tourneys:

2024: 1
2023: 1
2022: 0
2021: 2
2019: 1

For 5 v 12:

There have been 55 upsets by No. 12 seeds since the NCAA tournament field expanded in 1985. Going into 2025, the lower seed was 55-101, equating to a 35.26 win percentage.

In the last 5 tourneys:

2024: 2
2023: 0
2022: 2
2021: 1
2019: 3

Apparently, the 6 v 11 is more interesting:

The 11-6 March Madness upset pick isn't as famous as the 12-over-5, but it's had a higher hit rate. At least one No. 11 seed has reached the second round every tournament since 2005.

2024: 3
2023: 1
2022: 3
2021: 2
2019: 1

You must not get out much to not know that Leal is one of the best defenders in the nation. Dude had the best DBPM in the conference for a reason. Dude locked up Braden Smith for a reason. It is pretty clear the media and coaches had zero care for the defensive teams or DPOY.

I feel like this is a year where there could be a lot of chaos in the 5-10 seed games. But anytime I think that, it gets pretty vanilla. But I do like Drake and VCU.

Drake will def be a popular pick. Whenever that happens i feel they’ll fall short (hope not).

I hope we have chaos. I could see Florida being the only SEC team to the F4.

And a lot of the top of the B1G out in second round. I could see Oregon and UCLA advancing to second weekend.

I think Gonzaga makes a run.

Houston to the title game, but tbh if I have to pick a 1 seed for Purdue to play, it’d be them because they don’t have height…helluva defense, but I think we matchup the best out of the 1 seeds.

Tech to F4…Duke out in second weekend…Hope it’s a good match madness

YOU must not get out much to think anyone other than an IU fan gives two shits about Tony Leal. Outside of the IU fanbase no one knows who he even is. No coach is worried about him and no one game plans for him. But you go ahead with the fan fest you're having for him. As far as "locking up" Smith, I guess you just conveniently leave out the first game where Smith had 24/7/6.....

Leal should have at least been assessed a tech on the kick to the nuts on furst and Furst shoulda been given a T too. Multiple occasions Leal grabbed smith and no call. Loose ball be nailed smith and no call.

But what about the First game? Smith owned Leal then or was that another guy?

Leal has the old man game - grab and hit the lower body to throw guys off and hope it doesn’t get called.

Glad he was able to finally get some minutes his 5th year of college. Soon enough no one will remember him.

Unless, of course, he’s selling houses in Bloomington.

To Leal's credit, if he can get away with grabbing and holding without getting called, more power to him. The scuffle with Furst was a different matter.

His defense on Braden was solid but it's not like he did anything special. He played hard and physical and Braden generally didn't react well, he missed a bunch of makeable shots and tried to do too much and turned the ball over.

As someone else stated, it's not as though offenses are game planning around Leal's defense. If he played for a better team he'd likely be on the all-defensive team. The kid from Penn State is just a more disruptive defender and the guys from MSU, OR and UCLA probably got the nod because they had more team success.
