If I heard the announcers right, and I really stopped listening and watching much after the 3rd quarter, but one thing caught my attention late in the game. Did the announcers during the game, late in the game, today actually say that they thought that we can still win another 5 games and go to a bowl this year? I appreciate being optimistic, but that is real optimism. Where do we have 5 more wins this year coming from?

Was just thinking that myself. Five more wins: BGSU, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, and Indiana. I just don't see how Hazel can survive even a 6-6 season.

Let's be honest. The announcers were not exact A-list.

The whole ESPN production was pretty poor.

in the grand scheme of things Va Tech is a mid level power 5 team anymore unlike how they were 15 years ago. If Purdue is getting blown out at home by mid tier FBS teams i dont know how they win 5 more games this year, 2 or 3 maybe.

I can't believe there's people on here that think that we can still win 4 games. We won't be favored in any games the rest of the year. The absolute ceiling is 1 more win.

Purdue is favored over Bowling Green. Line opened at -2.5 and currently sits at -1.

and already it's righted itself and Purdue is now a +1. I wish I was paying attention at -2.5 and bet the farm. We will get embarrassed on Saturday. Another double digit loss to someone we have no business losing to in the first place.

There's no way Hazell gets fired if we get 6 wins. I don't think he gets fired if we get to 4 wins. I think 3 or less and he's gone. I think that's the realistic assessment based on his contract, buyout, and Purdue's conservative fiscal approach.

Screw the buy out. Fraud is a basis for breaking a contract along with failure to perform. Obviously the university was acting in good faith that they were hiring a "COACH." All I see is a guy who talks a lot about what he supposedly has fixed, which appears to be nothing because the last guy was actually winning about half his games. Hire a good law firm and send him packing with no cash. Eventually he can settle for much less or nothing. If he was a class act he would resign like Jim Tressel and take no $$ at the end of the season.

I don't see how Hazell can keep making excuses and sleep at night. Gotta be embarrassing. What
they are doing isn't working, you would think they would change something, cause the square peg isn't fitting in the round hole, no matter how long you try.

Just a statistical Note: in the Hazel era
year 1: 1 win, Year 2: 3 wins, Year 3: 1 win so far…… DH has a TOTAL of 5 wins.
I'd take the odds and say Purdue wins less than 5 games the remainder of this year. It sounds incredibly safe to make that bet.
A bet that would get better odds is whether Purdue fires Hazell, Fires Burke or Fires both…
Political Correctness drives really poor decisions.

Things are never as bad or as good as they appear.

2 things that could happen to get us to win 4 more games (both are unlikely):

1) change of offensive coordinator and play design.
2) Blough gets the nod and shows he can complete passes.

I'm still a believer that against the mid-tear BIG10 teams (ILL, NW, IOWA, IU, MINN) that we will be competitive if Hazell hasn't totally lost the locker room by that point. I think physically we aren't that far off from the typical slower BIG10 teams.
VA TECH outclassed us with their ACC speed, and made us 1-dimensional by not respecting that we could throw, not respecting that Appleby would be able to run more than a few yards because he is slow..and simply going all in on shutting down our running backs. We had guys in position to make tackles on defense and simply just got blown by.

If Hazell (and it's a big if) makes some tough decisions in regards to offensive changes and we have some success because of it, things could turn more positive over the course of the year. (Pipe Dream)

Unfortunately I don't think Purdue is the type of program that would dismiss a coordinator during the season because football just isn't that important, so most likely nothing will change and we are looking at maybe 3 wins.

Also, all of this talk pre-season from Hazell about protecting the ball being the most critical part of the QB position...and our starter now has 7 turnovers through 3 games and is coming off one of the worst performances a QB at Purdue has ever played....how could Hazell possibly start him against BG?

I think the first guy who started this post misheard the announcer. I listened when he said that. I think the first announcer asked about Purdue's success with the schedule the rest of the year. I remember the 2nd announcer saying that the schedule was really difficult, and that Hazell had to win five more games and go bowling to save his job and he strongly implied that Hazell was in trouble on that point. I can't remember how he said it, but he strongly implied that five more wins were very doubtful.

The coordinator(s) should have been changed after the first year. Then the coordinator(s) should have been changed after the second year.

When a coach is hired in December/January, they often aren't able to hire all of the staff they want to just because of timing. However, it's clear that Hazell doesn't see a problem with any of his assistants as he hasn't fired any of them. That, alone, is most troubling and points to a reason why changing coordinators would not solve things for the better. It may just mask a problem.

They will win one more game. An emotional victory over IU for their lame duck coach. (my dream). More likely they lose out and Hazell is fired because he can't beat IU. Very sad.

I doubt if they win any more games, they play losing football, how can you score when QB can't throw, most of the receivers act afraid to catch the ball, the runner stands there forever to get the ball while QB makes up his mind, then the runner has no momentum going forward, defense is afraid the other team might not catch the ball, so they stand back and let them catch it . but since I doubt if I go to more than one more game , what the hell

Typical negative post. You completely ignored the fact that our freshman punter is awesome.
