It is always good when a legacy comes home, and that is what we have today. Joey Sumlin is the son of former Purdue linebacker and coach at Houston, Texas A&M, and Arizona, Kevin Sumlin. Kevin is still in the top 10 on Purdue's all-time tackles list with 375 career tackles, and he is currently in the Big Ten as an assistant coach at Maryland.
As for Joey, he played at the prestigeous IMG Academy before redshirting last season. He also previously played at Salpointe Catholic in Tucson when his dad was coaching at Arizona. He received a scholarship offer at Morgan State, but he chose to be a walk-on at Purdue. As a linebacker he will probably look to compete on special teams first.
