I think it speaks volumes about the state of the program when it was pretty dead silent here yesterday. I get apathy is high. But there was not one decent thread in regard to this year's class. Yes, I know, it's not rated well. But there are some bright spots and that's what this thread is intended to cover.

No, we don't even know if we'll have the same coach after this year but that's besides the point because these kids chose to come here knowing very well the situation. It's an opportunity for them to get a free education and play division 1 football and who knows, perhaps be part of the turn around whether under this regime or not.

I think they signed a solid corps of defensive backs. We could see 2-3 of them contribute this year. We signed good size on the offensive line, despite lower rankings and as they say you can't teach size. In fact I think that they signed good size in general with most of the class and that is impressive.

I think we landed several good recruits. Shuman, Smiley and Mosley all look like solid pick ups for the secondary and it's hard to exclude Hayes from that list as well. Outside of that, I think Landers at WR is a solid pick up. The late pick up in Ferguson could turn out to be good as well.

The rest I think are those under the radar types. Maybe they turn out, maybe not. That Fakaseiieki LB looks like he had a lot of interest pick up in him late from some big schools. Looks like he could be a solid sleeper. Hopefully Anthrop turns out like his brother and he will be okay. My biggest concern is actually at kicker. The recruit has a leg, but only hit 50% of his field goals in high school. Now, I don't know the distances they were from but that is a concerning stat. Hopefully he can slide in and take the duties and be consistent but it's my biggest concern.

I know things don't look too great but I still wanted to find some positives. Hopefully one way or another it gets turned and these guys are a part of it.

Every football program in America is rooting for Purdue to keep Hazell as it's coach. That way, at least they will move up one spot. Very weak recruiting created by very weak coaching and leadership. Purdue will continue to maintain it's cellar dwelling existence as long as the current staff is here.

On the bright side....it's not like iu cleaned house yesterday. I was really surprised how weak their recruiting class was. (Help me out here....trying to find some positives!)

The RAH! RAH! posts are fine and dandy! We all welcome the recruits and wish them well.............but we all(at least I do) have a hard time believing this staff can get the most out of these kids as long as HAZZ is at the helm! I don't care if most of these kids are 3 star recruits, I just don't agree with his schemes, philosophies, or any game plan he brings to the table! Nothing he has done over the past 3 years says otherwise! This program is a dumpster fire of epic proportion! PERIOD! I look so forward when August rolls around, because I know football season is right around the corner! This guy has destroyed that enthusiasm two or three games into the season since he's been here!. I was disappointed when HOPE was here, but not even close to how I feel now. Next fall(thank god) I will have the opportunity to hopefully watch Appleby play on a real team, being that I will only be 40 minutes outside Gainesville!

As much as the Indiana media wants to play up the direction of the IU football program, the fact is that Wilson has yet to produce a winning season after 5 years. His bowl season was built on an unimpressive group of wins, and wouldn't have happened if Southern Illinois didn't drop a 2-pt conversion. For the firepower he had on offense the past few years, it's pretty remarkable that he hasn't achieved more.

Wilson just parlayed that bowl game into landing 14 three stars while Hazell parlayed his season into landing six. I can't stand Wilson and his shenanigans, but he certainly has done a lot better than Hazell.

But they played both OSU and MICH right to the final tic of the clock! I hate IU, but I would take Wilson any day over HAZZ! At least they are an exciting team to watch.

I understand you don't like Hazell, but 5 losing seasons and the big ten's 11th best class is not exactly where I'd want to see Purdue either. Wilson put together a class that isn't significantly different than the classes we've had here over the past several years. "A lot better than Hazell" still isn't good.

Record aside, you can look at IU and know they are light years ahead. Between the two, I would take Wilson. Not saying he is ideal

I certainly wouldn't want Wilson at Purdue...wouldn't want him anywhere. But he did get IU to a bowl game even if he did it by beating the two worst teams in the league the final two games of the season to do it. I still say Burke created this mess by allowing Hazell to coach his former team after being hired by Purdue which caused him to miss an entire recruiting year.

He didn't miss an entire year. Most of the class was committed at that point.

Right. We were "light years" ahead of IU and it took no more than a year or two for them to be competitive with us. Their level and ours are not significantly different.

Neither coach is great, but put Hazell at IU and he would have 1-2 wins per year. Put Wilson at Purdue (following Hope) and he would have had 6-7 wins a year.. and we would all be complaining about the defense and losing to the big boys every year.

Appleby only..............Etling and LSU.....

DH could have taken the entire year off to recruit before he started and he still wouldn't have recruited better than he has to this point.

I see an article in the J&C entitled "Purdue couldn't pass on raw linebacker". Nothing new there. We couldn't pass on anybody else the past 3 seasons so why would a "raw linebacker" be any different?

Agree. And some of his best recruits are some of the guys he nabbed before signing day that year.

There are lots of things to complain about with this coach....but that extra month he spent with Kent St. has little to nothing to do with why we suck now.

This is an issue I feel is a non-issue as well. I am going to use data from 2015 but feel it is likely applicable to the year DH was hired to prove this point.

DH staying on at Kent State to coach them in their bowl game didn't have any impact on recruiting...NONE! That is because the early portion of December to the middle portion of January (typically the week after the National Championship) is a dead period for recruiting....meaning no contact can be made with any recruits at all. Now, I'm not saying it doesn't happen but according to NCAA rules it can't happen. This means, DH staying with Kent State had no standing in recruiting at all. Now, it could have had an impact on his ability to bring in staff members because he could have been focusing on who to bring in and contacting them. But, as most hires for assistant coaches are typically made after bowl season, I don't believe that was an issue either.

Rather, I believe the problems lies in DH's raw head coaching ability. I believe he has an average to below-average ability to properly evaluate talent to bring in. This is evidence through numerous people telling me that Shoop had been pleading to offer Coy Cronk and make him a priority, yet Hazell wouldn't sign off on it. The same could be said for a defender at CC and for Hudson. I also believe this weak ability at evaluating talent also hurts with bringing in coaches whose style fits in with the programs Hazell is trying to build. For example, I'm not going to bring in a coach with a loose and rag-tag style like Mike Leach in at Army or Navy. It simple isn't going to work! Now, look at the personalities that Hazell assembled and tell me they don't clash head on!

As I have read in a book about being an administrator at a school or even a boss of any business...it is one thing to get the bus pointed in the right direction. It is another to get the right people on the bus and sitting in the right seats. I believe Hazell has the ability to get the bus pointed in the right direction but I don't think he has the ability to get the right people on the bus and in the right seats. Tiller was able to do all three and the monumental turnaround happened immediately.

Maybe Hazell knew that was his only chance to coach in a bowl game and he took it?

The media may be playing it up a little much but you are definitely playing it down. IU is a decent defense away from being a good team. IU got Mark Hagan back today which I think will really help in that regard. You point out the Southern Illinois win but IU was also only a play away from beating Michigan and played several other good teams close.
