Who are all of the legitimate Purdue prospects right now?

I know there's Schnider Herard and James Banks but I haven't really heard about anyone else at this point in time. The coaching staff needs to keep at it and get their third good class in a row. They can't rest on their laurels just because they got Swanigan.

The staff isn't going to rest on their laurels, but there is a legit question of whether any scholarships should be banked to 2017, where Purdue appears to be in good shape with several excellent prospects. It sounds like Painter will add a big in 2016, whether Herard, Banks, Sy, or Konate, but might hold on to the third scholarship.

If there's a really good player available at either guard spot or the 3 for 2016 (whether it be a freshman or transfer of some type), I think the coaching staff should pursue them.

Projected Scholarship Situation For Next Two Seasons:

'15-'16: '16-'17:

1. SF/SG Davis (Sr.) 1.SF Smotherman (Sr.)
2. C Hammons (Sr.) 2. SG Stephens (Sr.)
3. PG Hill (Sr.) 3. F/G V. Edwards (Jr.)
4. SF Smotherman (Jr.) 4. C Haas (Jr.)
5. SG Stephens (Jr.) 5. G Mathias (Jr.)
6. F/G V. Edwards (So.) 6. PG Thompson (Jr.)
7. C Haas (So.) 7. PF/C Taylor (RS So.)
8. G Mathias (So.) 8. SG Cline (So. or RS Fr.)
9. PG Thompson (So.) 9. PF Swanigan (So.)
10.PF/C Taylor (RS Fr.) 10. G Weatherford (So.)
11. SG Cline (Fr.) 11. PG C. Edwards (Fr.)
12. PF Swanigan (Fr.) 12. vacant (add a center: Herard? Banks? Sy? Konate? someone else?)
13. G Weatherford (Fr.) 13. vacant

I assume Sy's visit went well?

I haven't seen or heard anything, either. Someone here must know something about it, right?

The way it looks now is we will land Sy and keep trying after Banks and Herard but it's not likely we land either, so we keep our eye on other bigs and guards.

My guess is this class will be made of Edwards and Sy. Bank the extra scholly, Biggie, Kendall, Basil leave next year, we have 4 open schollys and try to get as many as we can out of Wilkes, Williams, JJJ, Eastern, Tillman, and Tilmon. More viable options will arise but focus on those 6 guys for now.

Has the coaching staff visited Banks since he's been at La Lumiere? I think I might like his game the most between him, Herard, and Sy but I might need to see more footage of Herard.

Banks visited unofficially a few weeks back with a bunch of LaLu kids. I don't know if we have gone to see him yet.

Banks is very very raw, both physically and fundamentally, but he is an amazing athlete and has tremendous length and upside. Kind of like a Jajuan Johnson type with a bit more bulk and slightly less length.

Herard is a beast. College ready body. Nice collection of post moves. Runs the floor great. Surprisingly not much of a shot blocker even though he is an athletic beast.

Banks is a potential type of recruit while herard is nearly a guarantee to make an instant impact in college.

What makes you so sure we will land Sy?

We are the only school he has visited so far and I don't think he has plans to visit anywhere else. We are his best offer and have a good track record with not only big men but also Oak Hill big men (AJ Hammons)

Do you think Purdue staff with wait on landing Sy to see what Banks and Herard decide?

Nope. If Sy wants to commit, they will take him, and still go after the others. Feels like they want multiple big men in this class

Izzo just landed the #1 class in 2016. The #7 player in the class just committed to them today. Their 2nd 5 star to go with two high 4 stars.

Big Ten is loading up!

I'm not sure why, unless they really think it's a possibility that Haas or Swanigan would leave early to turn pro. Otherwise, I would think that one quality big in this class would suffice.

that's what I think too

Swanigan is a real possibility to be a 1 and done. I hope he isn't but he might be. Haas could leave after his junior year and possibly Edwards too if he keeps improving. We need to prepare for that or get left in a situation like we were in when Robbie was a senior where we had no size.

From your own prognostication, that would still leave Haas and Taylor (and probably Swanigan, too: Purdue basketball has only had two early-entrants EVER; history is on their side) as true 4's/5's, plus Edwards (has the size to play as a college 4 man, as he did last season) for the 2016-2017 season. I still don't think they would need two bigs for 2016, especially since there are only 2 scholarships currently projected to be open with one basically designated for a big.

Can anybody provide info on Sy? What's his game like? Does he have a high ceiling? What might we expect from him?

That comes to what we as fans think and the coaches think. We were going after 5 bigs with hopes that 3 of them would be PF and 2 would be C. 2 of those PF are gone, still after the other PF and the 2 C.

Even if we have players at those positions next year, Painter loves to have players develope and be in the system for a long time. We land Sy and another big and they can sit back, learn, develope, and compete with NBA bigs then get their time to shine when those bigs leave. I like it.

I know the more we get in 2016, the less we have room for in 2017, but if the staff has an opportunity to land good talent, they will take it rather than wish for better players later, that has come back to bite us more than once.

Let's play a scenario out:

Best case scenario we go to a final 4 or better this year. AJ and Biggie are first rounders. We land Sy and bank the other scholly for 2017. We do well next year and Edwards and Haas break out and leave early, which is highly probable. Now we are left with only Sy and Taylor who are project players and likely won't be ready for a prominent role for another year. Now all the chips fall on 2017 to land some MAJOR talent. That traditionally hasn't been Purdue's strong suite. If we are lucky, we will get 2 really good guys from 2017 and even then, you have to start a freshman big man. That also has not been Purdue's sting suite.

I love the idea of taking multiple bigs in 2016, train them up slowly along with other high talent bigs that we have, have them break out when the other bigs are in the NBA and do it all again next year.

Yes, he has plans to visit elsewhere

You: I don't think he has plans to visit anywhere else.
Me: Yes, he has plans to visit elsewhere
You: Date and locations of planned visits?
Me: (link to an article by Brian that says,) "he is going to take more visits" (quoting Sy himself)

It is unambiguous that he plans to take more yet you continue to question it?

OK. Have fun arguing with yourself.

I guess we just have different opinions on what "making plans" means.

If I tell someone "We should hang out sometime," I don't call that making plans. If I say "We should hang out sometime, how does next weekend sound," and things are set up, I call that making plans.

Guess my definition of making plans is actually having things scheduled.

So I change my earlier statement to He hasn't scheduled any other visits. He has thoughts of visiting elsewhere but hasn't scheduled anything yet. Very well could schedule something soon, and I expect him too. Still think we land him.

Izzo must have increased the pay scale for players

I'm not sure Haas will leave early. I think he could certainly make the NBA but the scouts will see him as a 2nd rounder with him not being a great athlete. He definitely has the skills set though.

Who has ever said Haas isn't an athlete? Everyone raves about how athletic he is for being gargantuan.

His problem is he isn't very mobile and likely never will be.

the 2017 class is loaded in the state of Indiana. If Purdue has a great upcoming season hopefully these kids will be impressed by us and want to play for Purdue.

Haas isn't a great athlete; that's just the reality. Haas does have a great skillset, and he's not a bad athlete (obviously), but he's not "bouncy," like some of the more modern-day big men.

I don't think any 7'2" 300lb player is bouncy. He doesn't need to be. But for being his size he is pretty darn athletic. If you don't believe me or remember, go back and watch the North Florida game, or just some season highlights.

The role Haas plays means he stays on his feet and forces the offensive player to be "bouncy". At 7'2" / 300 lbs. Bouncy is not desired.

yeah, I agree. At 300 lbs, I don't expect for him to be bouncy. Maybe at 250, but not 300. I was just saying that, in comparison to other big men (who may be the same height, but weigh less), he's not as athletic, which is fine.

New info: article written by Adam Zagoria said that Purdue is in on Bruce Brown along with IU, Miami, and UMass.

Would ba an amazing get.

To my knowledge that leaves:
Schnider Herard
James Banks
Khadim Sy
Bruce Brown
As legitimate targets for the 2016 class.

Bruce Brown is a shooting guard unless I am looking at the wrong one. Also, Banks said that a decision is coming soon.

You are correct. More of a combo guard, but scoring is kinda his thing.

Would take Herard over Banks but wouldn't argue if either wanted to commit. Fantastic players.
