16 OH PF Nick Ward to MSU

Hilarious when fans from other teams who never post here show up within minutes of a recruit picking their school to fill us all in. Thanks buddy, that was so thoughtful of you to pass along that info.

It displays a deep insecurity, especially toward Purdue. I doubt he posted to any other boards. Funny, if you think about it.

Been a member since '05 and only 37 post.... Probably all on this board everytime they land a recruit we discuss.

At least he didn't drag it out.

I'm not sure what MSU fans stand to gain by puffing their chest here. Validation? :SMH:

I will use this thread to say one thing: people that say that because we had the "baby boilers" no one would commit because of lack of playing time are just flat out wrong. Situations like this prove it. Michigan state is now loaded at the pf position and just signed another. I am big supporter of painter and think he can and will make us a very good program again, but he effed up after that class. If you win, you will get recruits, period. Just win!

Sad situation. MP seems to be losing a lot of head to head battles with Izzo. I wish I could be as big a supporter as you are.

Were Izzo and Painter the only two coaches recruiting Ward? Seems to me as if a lot of other coaches are losing those head to head battles with Izzo too. Which makes your comments about Painter pretty much invalid.

I think everyone knows the recruiting classes after the baby boilers should have been wayyyyy better and that's what put Purdue in a bad spot for a few years but like you said JUST WIN!!! Just imagine if Barlow could of kept his head out of his ass and became the starting point we might not of signed RJ. A lot of what if's the last few years!

If I didn't know any better, it would seem like if Matt goes in on someone, MSU comes along as well. I mean Izzo and his staff are such stand up guys that they wouldn't be use negative recruiting tactics like what Fife said on that radio show right? I mean Izzo is just such a stand up guy and all ....

one guy doesn't make it...on to the next....focus on Brunk/Benson/Cumberland/Wright...etc.......

We are stacked at the 4 as well with Taylor and Edwards.......

We will be fine and he would of been a great addition but let's move on.....

Our needs are:
1) Depth at 5 spot to replace graduating AJH (Brunk or Benson)
2) Depth at the 3 spot to replace R. Davis (Cumberland or Damien Jefferson or Eli Wright)
3) Depth at the 1 spot to add depth (Simpson)
4) Any dynamic player that can be versatile and fits the system (Towns or Cook)

That's what our 4 spots need to be filled with.....

I would think Brunk saw this commitment and crosses out MSU off his list, plus with the relationship with Cline and Weatherford maybe helps Brunk see that he is a fit at Purdue.

Lot's of fluid pieces right now but lot's of time to still find the fits for Purdue and I am confident Matt Painter will.

All good and Boiler Up!

What hurts about missing on Ward is that we spent more time following him recently. I would love to land Brunk or Benson, but I doubt we land either due to the fact that we weren't showing them the love that we were showing Ward. Benson especially. He is legacy and again we will probably miss out on someone that should already be in the fold.

I get what you are saying but I don't think the amount of "love" we show someone whether it starts to pick up now or later makes much impact anymore. Look at Swanigan, CMP and the staff put in a lot of time on him (as did other schools) and he went elsewhere.

Also if a legacy doesn't fit a need that we have does it make sense to recruit him? PU52 put together a very good list of what we need going forward and IMO that is where the recruiting efforts should focused on.

So we don't need a center in 2016 after AJ graduates? What if haas leaves for the draft early. Benson would be a nice replacement or back up to Haas unless you're assuming Taylor is the man going forward.

Isn't that what Brunk is (A center)? So either or I guess will fill the need with maybe a better shot at Brunk since he has friends on the team already.... who knows ...

I think we all knew Ward wasn't coming to Purdue. At this point, I'm done getting my hopes up with recruits, and will just wait patiently for Painter to finally land a big time player. Haas and Stephens were solid gets (ranking-wise), but Stephens hasn't lived up to that billing. Hopefully he becomes less one-dimensional this year and next.

If I remember right, Stephens was prior to his injuries and truly hasn't been 100% since then. Hopefully that is the case and he turns it around next season.
exactly BBG...also remember it takes SG some time to adjust their shooting motion to fit the new found muscles they get when they get in a conditioning program.

It takes practice to adjust to the new found core and strength..............

That is why it is key for kids to practice free throws and shooting on their own time to keep up with their bodies.
*Note: Try shooting 25 free throws...then go run a mile and do 3 sets of 10 reps on the bench (say with 150lbs and then shoot 25 free throws.....compare the two.

Not noticed as much in big men except at free throw line, but SG and SF it takes time and practice to adjust their touch.

I know this is common knowledge but sometimes overlooked..............

I know K. Stephens puts in the time and now that he is healthy and has had time to adjust to his new muscle core he will be amazing next year.

I see the Junior class being the determining factor how far we go and how well we do....Stephens and Smotherman huge pieces to this team.

Boiler Up!

I am so sick of the idea that a legacy automatically should pick mom or dads school. It's been shown many times this is a fallacy at more schools than Purdue.

It seems like he and his staff have lost ALL of the head-to-heads vs. Izzo and his ilk. Serious question, is there anyone that both coaches have OFFERED that Purdue has gotten during Painter's tenure?

Wut? MSU actually was waaaay ahead of others, let alone PU.
Ward was identified by asst. coach Dwayne Stephens while State was in midst of rcrting his HS teammate Javon Bess in fall of 2013. MSU was the first school to offer the kid for crying out loud.

How about next time you feel compelled to post idiotic statements, you instead do a simple check of, you know...the FACTS to avoid appearing as a fool.

No problem, he has MSU fans who will save him from that fate. How many "get out of jail free cards" does each recruit get? Or is it a endless supply?

I agree here. Ward was into MSU early on.

Seems to me that at $2 million + per year MP should be winning at least a few head to head battles on the recruiting trail against Izzo. Then he might be able to win a few head to head b-ball games against Izzo because he would then have a competitive team. Send me some of your kool aid.

What exactly did Fife say?? I don't listen to MSU radio shows.

MSU was on him early and he is the perfect mold for what they do and the kind of kids they have had success with. A powerful guy that plays below the rim, rebounds well and plays smart. Izzo has developed this kind of player time and time again, as he will do with Swanigan and Ward. Izzo is highly regarded and most importantly wins, that is an up hill fight for Purdue regardless of who the coach is. Additionally, Painters philosophy is old school and he doesn't appear to be a slick salesman, which is always going to make it that much more challenging to get the upper tier kids who are promised the moon and handed the keys to the car before getting on campus. The assistant turnover hasn't helped. For Purdue to take the next step, the assistants are going to have to make in roads, '16 and especially '17 will dictate where Purdue is at, the on staff assistants will have had time to recruit from a young age, we will see if they can land "their guys".

I'm not sure how long you've been a Purdue fan, but we use every excuse under the sun to justify why we don't get to the Final Four, even when they are contradictory. :D

Someone posted a comment he made on Dakich or something a while ago .. I'd paraphrase but can't remember all he said. He did single Purdue out by name at the time, hopefully someone else remembers.
Who cares. Fife is the penultimate POS in life and in basketball. He was a total bust at IUFW, then begged Painter for a job, then backed out and took all the recruiting information to MSU because he likes Michigan as a state better and who can forget his dirty play and biting when at IU. I was actually glad he didn't come to Purdue and was frankly another really bad choice by Painter to let him in the door to begin with.

Sorry heller, but you are way off. Painter offered him the job & Fife said no. Dakich discussed this on his show more than once.

ok back to point of original post......

so we missed on Ward...good get for MSU...good kid.

Here are some names to look for to fill that void:

2015 Shawntrez Davis 6ft 8in 205lbs PF from Georgia 3/4 star just picked up offer from Texas
2016 De'Ron Davis 6ft 9in 240lbs PF from Colorado 4 star
2016 Tyler Cook 6ft 9in 254lbs PF from St. Louis, MO 4 star
2016 Nick Rakocevic 6ft 10in 200lbs from Chicago, IL 3/4 star

Lots of fluid pieces at the PF/4 spot for Purdue and remember we have Edwards and Taylor to play that spot next year, so we will be fine.

Kids are smart, they know what's going on and all want playing time.

If AJH would have left that moves Taylor to the 5 spot to back up Haas (because he knows the system) or gives Shawntrez Davis something to consider for 2015 and for future it would have at least opened a spot for Ward or one of these other 2016 to get time at the 4 spot because Edwards could play the 3 or 4 spot with Taylor playing the 4 or 5 spot in 2016.

Taylor is the wildcard for Purdue...he has a year under his belt in the system and is very athletic.
*Note: He is coachable and you can tell loves being at Purdue.

I look for Taylor to have a great year and Purdue to do just fine next year.

I like where we are with Painter's recruiting......great depth everywhere but PG, but that will be fixed after this year.

Get a Brunk/Cumberland/Simpson/Best athlete that fits system class for 2016 and all is well.

Boiler Up!

I realize it takes time, but even before the injury, Kendall was still pretty one-dimensional and primarily hung around the perimeter and shot 3 pointers. If he can get a solid mid-range game, he can be lethal. Kid is clearly an elite shooter when he's right...I think he'll put it all together for these final two years.

Yeah we have been losing out to MSU but at least we are going after these top guys. MSU usually has top notch teams so the guys we are competing for are pretty good. It, at least means we have high standards for quality. I would rather be going up against MSU instead of Cleveland State or somebody who would be after lower profile players and wouldn't even get a sniff from these top players. Just my take.

Painter knows how recruits feel toward the program and puts time in accordingly. Whereas other recruiters create a feeling with the recruit towards the school BY putting time in......JMO. And the results are as they are with both those approaches......
