13th in latest rankings

My son is a track athlete. he has his ups and downs. When jumping, his numbers have been going up, and that's good. But when running, his numbers have been going down. Which is also good. A win win situation.
and you replaced a conflicting direction with a qualifier as I said above( up and good and down and good)

still as your number goes down...you join a smaller group. I just find it a paradox to go up by going down or vice versa. I understand that is the language we use. Seems better to say cutting my golf score and getting better. I fully get what we are used to saying, but it is still a paradox to suggest that moving up is moving down or moving down is moving up...got all that. It is how we talk, but still a paradox in the purest sense. Not providing two conflicting directions (up and down) by replacing a qualifier seems more appropriate, but we have what we have...I understand and it has been that way all my life. just killing time between the next Boiler victory
Kim needs to drag you out of the house...

Just to show you how close the voting is, you take out one extreme voter (Theo Lawson) and we are 11. He had Purdue really low (21) and UNC and Texas A&M really high (10 and 6 respectively).

I would agree. there are always some biased voters. I don't place much faith in the rankings. Because of them, we'll probably end u p receiving a lower seed than we deserve. regardless, if we want to be the best, we still must beat the best. to get to the Final 4, we're going to have to beat UNC and/or Texas A&M or a similar team somewhere along the way.

#12 in the Coaches and a not too shabby # in the RPI!

As I look at it, if we get a 3 seed, we'll still have to play the 2 seed to make the elite 8 and the 1 seed to make the final 4. and those teams will all be tough matchups.

if we get a 2 seed, we'll still have to play a 3 seed and a 1 seed to make the Final 4. and those teams will all be tough matchups.

however, if we get a 4 seed, we'll still have to play a 1 seed and a 2 seed, but in reverse order. and those teams will all be tough matchups.

the only difference between being a 1,2,3 or 4 seed is when you play your toughest team. on that second weekend, would you rather play the 1 seed in the first game? or the second game of the weekend? There are some who would rather play their toughest game first.

So it doesn't really matter what our seed is as long as we make it to the second weekend. because, all those teams will be tough matchups. Making the sweet 16 is something only the best 16 teams do. But to make the Elite 8 and final 4, you're going to be going up against some pretty tough opponents. We're going to playing teams like Nova, Duke, MSU, Kansas and UK just to get to the elite 8. you just gotta give it your best shot.

life is like a math problem...you need to do the right things in the right order to get the right results. ;)

"This statement is false.” If this is true, then the sentence is false, but if the sentence states that it is false, and it is false, then it must also be true! So the sentence is both true and not true at the same time. ;)

I see it slightly differently. Sure, it's technically possible for us to beat both a 1 seed and a 2 seed (assuming we are a 4 seed) to get to a Final Four, but I think the seeding does matter (specifically, huge difference between 3 and 4 seed). The more realistic chance for us to get there is to be in a bracket as a 3 seed and the 1 seed get upset in an earlier round where the bracket breaks open. A lot of 1 seeds can get upset in round of 16 (vs round or 32 or 64), so avoiding the 4 seed (e.g. get the 3 seed) is advantageous because we wouldn't potentially see 1 seed until Elite 8 round or not at all (we were a 4 seed against UCONN with Hasheem Thabeet, against Duke in 2010 and we were a 4 seed last year against Kansas. Each time, it was too much. It would have taken our A+ game and a really bad off night for other team to win that game).

I think we have a much greater chance against the projected 2 seeds (Xavier, UNC, A&M, WVU) vs those loaded NBA talent type teams (Duke, MSU, etc). Nova is in between for me as I think we matchup better with them than Duke/MSU. I also think teams like FSU (team of athletes and a likely 6 seed) could be a bad matchup, especially if they are locked in and shooting well.

I think with our balanced and senior laden team, we can beat a lot of top teams, but some teams are just bad matchups for us. Outside of elite teams, getting far in NCAA is about the matchup you get and think our FF chances are much better as a 3 seed. Just my 2 cents.

I guess I don’t see it that way. We had been stuck in a rut with seeding and have only been a 3 seed under Painter once and never 1 or 2. In order to get to the FF I had to get to the elite 8 once and we have never done that under painter. All 3 times we made it to the S16 we had to play the 1 seed. I think playing a 2 or 3 vs 1 is huge. Plus the chances of playing a 1 in the elite 8 are not 100% (it is actual 87%). Let’s look at the facts

3 seeds - 24% make to elite 8, 11% to FF
4 seeds - 16% and 10%
5 seeds - 6% and 5%
6 seeds - 11% and 2%

The fact a six seed has nearly twice the chance at making the EE than a 5 highlights how difficult it is to get to it out of the 4/5 seed. And the 3 has 50% better chance than 4.

I can see both of your points. We'd have a much better chance as a 2 or 3 seed, and the #1 seed could lose allowing us to play the 4 seed the second game. .

so I'll ask the question, to get to the Final 4, we would have to beat two very strong opponents in a 72 hour period. Which team would you rather face first? the best team? or the second best team?

My gut says I'd rather play the tougher team first. however, my experience watching Purdue play says I'd rather Purdue faced the weaker team first. Purdue doesn't normally do well the first time they play on a road court. Our shots just don't fall a lot of times. but if we get by the weaker team first, and have a second game at the same arena, we tend to do a lot better.

Texas A&M and Kansas both lost yesterday. So that puts us even closer to the top 10 of we take care of business this week. It's a great time to be a boiler fan.

Give me the easier game at anytime. That way, if you get the good fortune most Championship teams need to get in winning it all, you may not get that tougher team due to them being upset beforehand.

Assuming the teams that beat them don't automatically get put ahead of us...
