Sorry if this has been answered buried in other posts....but, in the GBI article online, the last paragraph reads:

"Swanigan will not sign a letter-of-intent with Purdue, but intends to enroll in summer school in some form, Barnes said, though he has a potential summer conflict that comes with an opportunity with USA Basketball."

Is this something to be concerned with??? Is he leaving himself an "out"?

Wasn't sure what to make of this. Someone please explain the rationale. Thanks!

Can't explain the rationale behind not signing the LOI and you are correct it does leave him an out until he enrolls!

I don't think he has a ton of time before needing to enroll in summer classes. Wouldn't that lock him in?

If he does it would, but the article regarding his summer basketball commitments "MAY" prohibit him from attending summer school!

Brian at GBI explained on his podcast.

There's no reason to sign an LOI because you don't have to. Why wouldn't Biggie sign one, you ask? What if Painter gets run over by a bus tomorrow? What if AJH and Haas are kicked off the team in the next two days because of sexual misconduct?

Point is, strange things *could* happen, and if they do… Biggie has outs. No need to sign an LOI if you don't have to. That said, he's not leaving unless something unforeseen happens before summer classes start for him.

LOI's are not required. They are used to insure a spot for the player and a player for the spot. The Ivy League I don't believe even participates in the LOI agreement between conferences. However, the NCAA now recognizes them and enforces a year transfer rule if the kid doesn't join his original team.

  1. There may be something in the LOI for Purdue that requires the player to enroll in summer classes now that summer workouts allow coaches to have a more hands-on approach. Purdue hasn't had a player, prior to enrolling, who would really be a factor in USA Basketball between their senior and freshman years. It may be a little more common than we as Purdue fans think and may be something that may the staff may have to review in their LOI guidelines. Now, this is purely speculation and signing the LOI may not come with those requirements at all.

Brian,

I guess it COULD work both ways say he blows out an ACL and cannot play next season a school could walk on his scholarship too couldn't they then?

Let's get down to the facts without signing either the LOI or the other document that some Top Recruits sign instead, Purdue is hanging on his enrollment to insure he is attending Purdue, correct or not?

Say you were about to turn 18 in a few months and finally allowed to get your own cell phone. You have the phone all picked out and the data plan and texting and you're ready to go when the time comes. The company comes to you and says, hey... we notice you are about to turn 18, why don't you sign this contract that says when you're 18 we already own the rights to your cell phone usage and get you all set up with the things you already know you want. Sounds great huh. You ask the company what the benefit of signing now vs. waiting is and they say well... I mean, if you sign now you can't back out and there are severe penalties if you try regardless of the circumstance, but if you sign now we can lock in your rate that is listed on the website as of right now and could fluctuate up or down. Or you can wait and nothing is guaranteed, but you'll still have every option available to you to make the best choice when you turn 18.

So you decide to wait till you turn 18 to sign that contract because you know this is a pretty big business decision and even though you've made up your mind, you know a lot of things can happen between now and then. The company could get bought, the phone you were looking at could be recalled, a new version comes out.. all sorts of things. But you still have a plan and barring any outside problems with the company and technology on your 18th birthday you get a new phone and everyone gets what they want. You then promptly dunk it on your teammates head because the season has started and you aren't allowed to use twitter.

Correct, the phone company has nothing until they get a signed contract and you have no phone until you do!

Still no phone until you do, still no scholarship until you sign or enroll, those are the facts. Also a school cannot insure you for a blown ACL until you are signed or enrolled! There are risks that he and anyone else who has not signed are taking! It is a two way street!
